I hope they don't give you a rash of crap because you did your own oil changes. When I worked we had a Ford 5.4 with cam phaser problems and Ford tried to deny the warranty because we used NAPA oil filters instead of Motocraft. A stern reminder that our company fleet manager mentioned he liked the looks of the new Chevy trucks changed Fords mind.

Toyota says my vehicle has 6k mile oil change intervals. I've only done 3 oil changes at 5kmiles each at my personal mechanic shop with with mobil 1 oil and paid extra for a Castrol filter instead of the cheap Chinese ones. The Castrol one says on the box it fits oem standards and doesn't void warranty. I'm also hoping this goes smoothly and they don't try to pull a fast one on me.

They say oil changes are 6k? But only include oil changes in their Pre-paid maintenance package every 10k?

From what I've read online it's 10000 kilometers here In Canada or 6k miles. I haven't had the dealer contact me to confirm

In US it's every 10k miles for regular truck service, or 5k or so of its severe service like taxi or police...

I think only if you don't care about your truck and don't plan to keep it above 100k miles only then you can do 10k mile oil changes.

Probably cause its cold and they are worried about fuel dilution watering down that nice, thick, 0W-20 to -10W-12.

Hey everyone after a week of arguing I was given a toyota corolla loaner. They've pulled the pan, tons of oil shavings and toyota tech seems to think it's a spun bearing. They've opened a case for toyota to approve and waiting to hear back but they've already told me not to expect a new engine. It will be a new long block and they will rebuild it in house at the dealer. Does that seem right?

Wtf, I've heard a few cases before on this forum and everyone says they got new engine or transmission right away. None of this rebuilding bs

Go speak with the manager and demand a new engine as it's not your fault you got a defective engine and they must make you whole.

Spun bearing does make sense. That's usually grounds for a new motor. I wouldn't trust a rebuild and wonder if it was caused by lack of oil pressure or if the bearing or mating surface was out of spec

A new long block is basically a new engine, block, crank, pistons, cylinder heads and valves usually comprise a long block. All they have to do is swap over stuff like alternators, AC compressor, manifolds, etc. I wouldn't be too concerned with a long block. The only area of concern I'd have is the oil going to the turbos most likely has some of the metals shavings in it if they found that in the oil pan. May want to discuss the turbos with the service dept and ask they get swapped out as well since that same oil was pumped through them.

Yeah I would push the turbo issue as Coasty suggested. Last thing you need is two bad turbos after an engine rebuild.

How is it that the metal shavings in the oil could get into the intake manifold?

A long block should cover it. The metal shavings should have been caught by the filter unless it went into bypass mode. So I wonder how much the filter caught would be the question.

I wouldn't accept anything less than a complete new motor and all associated parts. It's Blown! Replace it, not rebuild it! It's your brand new truck, it should have a brand new motor and not some wrenched out transplant abortion of a long block swap without really knowing if everything is 100%. Only way to be sure... Replace everything.

Where would they even get a long block for such a new engine? Jasper? In the days of old cast iron Detroit boat anchor V8s a long block should have it covered. Today it's hard to say. I wouldn't stand for anything less than a new crate engine and one helluva extended warranty afterwards. I never trust an engine once someone has had their grubby little dick-beaters in there fiddle-farting around.

    Hi everyone. Quick update,

I spoke with toyota canada and they informed me they haven't given brand new crate engines as warranty for over 12 years they are always rebuilt at the dealer. I received an email from service informing me the majority of my parts have arrived as well for rebuild. I anticipate having my truck back before Christmas. Toyota Canada informed me they would try to make this up to me by providing me a refund of my payments for the months I didn't have the truck and/or an extended warranty. I'm waiting on some photos of the block disassembly and installation of the new one. I'm fairly certain there will be a recall with these engines in the near future regarding this issue. I've confirmed toyota is recommending a 16,000 kilometer oil change interval. I did mine at 8000 and by 24000 kilometers I'd done 3 oil changes instead of one. I'm very gentle on my vehicle so I'm forced to conclude this is a oil pump defect or maybe even the bearings themselves. What I know for sure is I never expected any toyota with 24000 km to lose an engine.

I feel your pain at having this happen. Seriously, what data makes you think it's an oil pump or bearing issue? Could be random or if this is a documented issue would see more major engine losses.

Not trying to yank your chain, just want to understand. From a pure numbers standpoint, you build something, there will be failures even with the best designed and within strict quality control processes.

Nothing data related with my guess. It's just an opinion. I work with heavy machinery I've owned dozen of vehicles and never had even a minor issue. To lose an entire engine when you've done 3 times the required maintainence and you take extremely good care with a proper break in process, e.t.c I wonder what the guys using them as a work truck and beating the crap out them are in for.

Agree and I am the same way. I dropped and changed the oil on mine at 1K and generally the way I drive change twice a year at about 5K.

If there is a one off Mechanical defect Quality assembly issue, it's going to break regardless of the level of care.

Or maybe it was just a random failure. Just cause it happened on yours doesnt mean every tundra motor is a ticking time bomb.

I do agree that 16k km is a bit long of an interval on a GTDI motor like this though.

I've owned 5 toyota pickup trucks. Never had to visit the dealer for an issue even once.
My vehicle currently has 6 active recalls, issues from the car shutting off at slow speeds, to mudflaps and even turbos that can kick the can at any time. My entire cab is being taken apart to rebuild this engine. They are also refusing to do anything about the turbos until there is an issue with them. I'm just saying that I waited 12 years for a new tundra and I'm disappointed with how they turned out as we have several new models of pick ups released almost every year with almost no issues. The last time I saw a truck riddled with this many issues was when ford just released the eco boost on their pick ups. I bought this truck unseen and blindly because that's how much trust I had in toyota as a brand before this. blame covid or the economy but I expected a far more refined product from them after 12 years since the last redesign

Curious if the oil filters were inspected from the previous oil changes. Just might have been a sign the engine was making metal.

It depends what they do for me. I expect to be given my payments for the time it was at the dealer regardless. But I take trips to Florida every year and do alot of long distance road trips. I need to have faith in my vehicle to safely take my family around. The day I broke down I was doing 100 on a busy road with tons of vehcles around and narrowly avoided an accident. If they give me a full extended warranty I'll keep it as I'm very genuinely not a fan of the other brands pick ups

Well, the more you buy the higher your chance of something happening, right? The supervolcano in Yellowstone has a low chance of killing us all in any one particular year but the more time that passes, the higher the chance it happens.

And you bought the first model year of a completely ground up design. I would be extremely impressed if such a complex machine could be designed and built and not have something crop up once its released in mass quantities in wildly varying conditions and use cases.

I dont know why you think the turbos need to be changed. A long block replacement wouldnt typically include replacing the turbos unless there is something specifically wrong with them. I can almost guarantee there is at least two filters(main oil filter and mesh screens in the oil feed lines to the turbo) between the main bearings and the turbos that would have caught any contaminants.

Even if there were something wrong with the turbos, a turbo failure wouldnt do anything to the engine.

I didn't buy 6 new generation tundras and 1 of them broke. I bought 5 tacomas without any issues and bought 1 new tundra with the 3.5L and had nothing but issues. The only factor that changed was the different vehicle. the turbos on these are known to fail its not related to my engine loss. When they take the truck apart they are easily accessible and can we change them Right there. toyota has already released the fix for the turbo/wastegate issue but there isint a recall yet which is only a matter of time I believe. Knowing my luck I'll get the truck back only to lose the turbos shortly after and have to do this dance all over again.
