I have a 2015 Limited in Attitude Black Metallic. I want to replace the stock chrome bumper with something black. My question is whether I can go cheap and get standard black and have it look good or if I need to spend the extra couple hundred bucks to get the color match.

Any first hand experience putting black parts on the ABM?

I was struggling with the same decision. I have a MGM and ended up color matching grill and bulge with all black bumpers. The grill and bulge come in this week! To answer ur question I would color match if you can.

Color matched parts look better in my opinion.

I went regular black, you can't tell the difference really, at least I can't. I color matched my handles and mirror covers though. As for just the grille, I couldn't find a color matched one at my time of purchase, so I just picked up a black. Looks fine imo.

This... I have a Limited with the Metallic paint. On advice I was told just to go with standard black bulge and black pro grille. Can’t tell difference unless standing 6 inches from it and know what your are looking for.

I normally like black as a contrast but a black grille may look off in this situation, I'd go for the color match.

I’d echo what Borgs and Tundrastu said. I’ve also seen Roman say in a couple pro grille threads that metallic black owners often just rock the standard black (202) color and seem happy with the result. Perhaps try initially without color match and if you are unhappy take the grille off and take it to a local body shop?

Yes, @Roman made this suggestion to me and as always he was spot on. Also, as I understand, the only difference between the two colors is the Midnight Black Metallic (218 if I recall) is actually just the 202 base coat, and the clear coat as the second step has the blue metallic chips in it. So in other words, if it bothers you with just the 202, all you would need to do is clear coat it with the 218 clear coat and you’d have the color match.

Yep, you’re 218 with metallic blue flecks in the black vs standard black 202. If you’re rocking OCD, color match. The 2018 honeycomb grille assembly and bulge come in code 218, you’ll also need an emblem, small internal cover is optional. If you do the 2018 LED headlights with iHacker harness, voila, your truck looks “2018”. Check this thread:

It's my understanding that the grill comes as a set, meaning the surround and the grill. The bulge is separate. Sometimes you can find just the surround on eBay. But if you order through a Toyota parts website it will be the whole thing.

@Chi_weezy yep, easiest way to to order the Pro grill with surround and then just sell the grill insert, which you can get a good price for.

When I ordered the 2019 pro grille I got the black surround with it that I will not be using. I was debating on selling it because its just going to collect dust
