    Imagine driving a 30 ft box truck backwards.....on a Jeep trail....hee....hee....
The crazy thing is that here in Colorado a lot of these passes you hear about were originally used by narrow gauge trains to take up supplies to support mining operations and bring ore back to the stamp mills back in the 1870's! Many over 12000 ft! Now.....jeep trails....

So, has anyone on here done BBP with a Tundra? I know the consensus seems to be that it's a bad idea, so if you've done it and don't want the flame job, please shoot me a PM.

For the record, I was able to convince my friend that this is not the trail to do at our experience level in the Tundra.

I'm actually looking to see what it might be like in my RZR instead.

Thats a trail I would leave alone. Maybe good for a ride on a quad or a side by side or something, definitely not a truck.

Narrow gauge rail never went up to the pass on Black Bear. The giveaway is the grade and super tight switchbacks. Not even a narrow gauge train can accomplish that feat. Not even a cog driven train. It was cut by hand by hard rock miners. Lots of silver in that part of CO. Silverton ring any bells? No doubt horse drawn wagons were used at some point to supply the miners and bring back ore. That grade was cut to bedrock. Hence.... why it's a challenge with modern day ICE vehicles.....unless you have a box truck to deliver a nice washer/dryer Samsung set to the Henderson's.....think about that tidbit.....the "Henderson's".....

FYI...if those of you should decide to come out here to check out these great offroading trails mentioned here.....remember.....these "trails" are now around 150 years old give or take.I can safely say that all the high country trails here are mining related. All. What else for? Was a hard life for a hard rock miner back then. The conditions sucked in the mines. The conditions at those altitudes here aren't bad now...hell, you will find some fancy ass summer vacation homes now at 12K ft +. But imagine back then.....canvas tents....hardtack, company store to rip you off. Bottom line....research the history of these old passes before you head out here. While here....check out the Museum here in Denver. You could spend a day just checking the mining section. Some very rare ore samples among the crazy ass crystal's found here. Big ass gold, silver, molybdenum, among other museum grade specimens.

So you might find this funny, but I don’t do Black Bear Pass. The risk is not worth the reward for me. You roll right here 20 yards in front of this screen shot (or most places on these trails), death is a certain outcome even with a full on roll cage tied into the frame (which 98% are not).

That’s saying something considering I do this quite frequently…

There are so many nice old mining roads to hit here in CO without risking your life, as you you know Chris and props to you to warn members. Many of us old farts have some wheeling history. Good and not so good at times. You learn from experiences. Times change. Better tires, suspension mods, and the like make for a better offroading experience, but knowing your limits is crucial. Especially if you might be doing this for the first time here at hi altitude. Many access roads start at 9,000 ft! Warm during the day now but a quick monsoon can drop temps by 30 degrees in a heartbeat. Hail up high. Smaller hail but can get a couple inches deep in minutes.

Yep. I have seen vacationers drop due to altitude sickness and not acclimating first. When I worked on top of Pikes Peak Toll road for 3 months in the winter/spring...almost a daily occurance. Imagine if that happened on BBP?

What's lame is I haven't been up to the top of Pike's all these years. Heresy.... I want Manny to experience the Cog. Maybe after Labor Day when things taper off a bit.

To everyone that wants to come out here.....fall is best. Less traffic up high and the Aspens changing color is something to see... not like New Hampshire which is known for Granite and fall colors. We have 64 14,000ft mountains of Granite among other nifty rocks........

I cycled up Cottonwood Pass 2 days after getting to Bueno Vista. I felt like I was concussed at the top (stumbling around and all) and that was only 12k feet. So I cured it by medicating myself at Eddyline brewery after the descent back to town. You can get some good speed on the way down. Hitting 85km/h on a road bike in thin lycra is a bit terrifying.

Ok, coming from a guy from where these kinds of trails just don't exist: That is NUTS!!! I can see how it would be fun, but I would never have imagined a 4 wheeled vehicle could make it through anything like that! Down here, off road means mud, ruts, and stuff that is MUCH milder than that.

Ya, previous to that I was cycling in southwestern Ontario where there are no big hills. So CO was "put head down, go into tank mode, don't expect to billy goat up in any good time...". A week later I did Rock Cut in RMNP and the wind was so bad it pushed me off the bike a few times. Literally had to unclip and put a foot down to stop from being blown off the mountain. That was far worse of a ride but didn't feel as physically draining as I'd been up and down the mountains for enough time to get used to the thinner air - at least a bit.
