I just bursted out laughing during a safety meeting over this comment. Everyone is looking at me and I should probably be embarrassed now.

Yuck. That's just disgusting. Buncha dirtbags. I remember several years ago when my insurance agent pitched the idea to me of plugging in a dongle to track my driving habits in exchange for a possible rate decrease. I laughed so hard at him he turned bright red. Nope, no way. Where and how I drive is up to me; if there is something unsafe about how I do that, there are plenty of LEO's to tell me otherwise.

And I highly doubt Toyota isn't selling that info in the same manner - or at least Google since the new Tundras are hooked up to the great harbinger of of the end of times. I drove a new tundra around for a bit while getting my SC installed and asked the salesman point blank if I could disable Google and it's tracking "services". He didn't even have to to think about the answer - 'well, no, you can't.'

The problem with opting in to vehicle tracking (or if the dealer opts you in, either by convincing you to try a "free" trial or because they get an incentive so they just do it without asking you), is that all that connectivity can, depending on the business model you don't control, report all your driving to third-party information gathering services.

Often packaged as "convenience", these can ultimately screw the consumer. Recently, several GM vehicles started reporting vehicle performance/use data to Lexus Nexus, and it's available to insurance companies... with "spirited drivers" having insurance rates tripled, or coverage cancelled altogether, even though they have clean driving records.

If it hasn't happened already there will be terms and conditions that say basically everything you say or do will be tracked by Toyota and if you don't like the T&C, don't buy the Toyota.

Reading through the link to the Toyota privacy legalese, it states one can opt out of connected services and request deactivation of data transmission. If that is the case then why wouldn't one just avail themself of this option of they were concerned with privacy? How the heck did any of us survive in this world prior to all these connected services?

Auto kill switches have already been signed into law starting in 2026, it was buried in a large bill that was signed in 2021. Only part to figure out is how it is going to be implemented, proposed rules and solutions are supposed to be released this Fall. Going to be easy to implement given all the connected crap in vehicles these days.

You typed this on a device that tracks your data, using a browser that tracks your data, on a site that you almost certainly found via the search engine that tracks more data than any other company on the planet, probably connected to the same WiFi as a dozen other devices doing the same, all of which share said data to and from every other phone/computer/tablet connected to said WiFi, multiplying the data you surrendered by multitudes.

    Sheeple though…..

I opted out of Drive Pulse on the Toyota app. I read that some other manufacturers are provided driving data to insurers. Not sure if that's true, but I'd rather not pay more than I already am because I gave it the beans to pass someone.

Upon further review, it does not seem like Toyota is one of those companies who are selling the data to a third party:

“I want Toyota to use my location (latitude and longitude at a particular point in time) and driving data (including vehicle acceleration, speed, braking, steering) to calculate my Drive Pulse score and track recent trips.

Drive Pulse score and recent trips will be calculated and tracked for the selected VIN.

Drive Pulse score, driving behavior, and trip information are for your information only and is not shared with any third party for its own purposes without your express consent.”

I way I read it you can opt out of certain things. It didn't mention which one you could or couldn't opt out of.

One of the uses for this is to supply aggregate data to companies who sell real-time traffic data for mapping developers such as Bing maps/traffic, Google maps, etc.. You can't really opt out of a lot of this stuff unfortunately; in my town they're installing red light cameras, speed cameras, and license plate readers at intersections that will automatically send you a citation if you break the rules. ...Pretty sad.

Someone posted it. GM is selling their data to data company that insurance companies use and have raised rates or cancelled people because of it. That to me is going too far.

How long before you start getting automatic fines for speeding or slow rolling through stop signs, etc.

It's already here bro, I just got a ticket from Maryland SafeZones where there may or may not be road work being done for 68 in a 55, where the other 9 of 10 zones are 65 which is the posted limit anyway. $42 including online fee they send you a pic of your plate...no one even out there working that day...but the camera was!
