I just had a flowmaster 40 (original not super) 2 in 2 out straight back. It looks and sounds AMAZING! Local Muffler shop Ron's Muffler Shop in Dimwiddie, VA fabricated the pipes and I supplied him with 2 TRD black tips.

Looks and sounds great. Any annoying drone issues at highway speeds?

I have the Carven and love it. The sound is bad ass but not over the top. There is a little drone at certain points but not bad. Anything aftermarket made to be loud, you're going to hear it.

Yes, but if it drives you crazy enough to change it out then you'll have spent less just going with dirty deeds first!

FYI, if anyone is considering ordering a Borla Catback exhaust system, they are backlogged and estimated ship date is now in July. Of course, it only took them 2.5 weeks to let me know that after I placed my order. WTF...

I know this is an old post, but hopefully y'all are still out there. I have an '07 5.7L with 240k on it. We tow a 25' Airstream. I don't think the exhaust muffler is stock as it has a really nice deep growl, but the drone sound under load and on inclines is bad. Can't hear people in the back seat and back seat passengers complain of the deep drone sound. One of the cats broke up inside and I had it cut out and a new aftermarket one welded in. No engine lights or codes and runs like new. Now another cat is breaking up (sounds like a broken ceramic mug inside a tin can rattling around). If I replace the system with an aftermarket one that is quite, what would y'all recommend so that I eliminate the drone sound, retain performance, and don't have any codes or engine light?
    Thanks!

We have a system called the 10” system. Call to order. I set it up a specific way when I know you’re towing. Also, change out that cat asap. When the rattle it’s only a matter of time before it can turn sideways inside and actually clog the exhaust which has the potential to cause permanent engine damage

That’s crazy. I’m sorry to hear about your situation. With systems starting at less than $500 I thought I included everyone in my pricing models. If there’s anything that I can do please let me know.

The one question that always pops in my head when I see results like this:
With manufacturers being so competitive, why would any of them leave that much HP/TQ on the table? Especially if it's something that can be achieved by an exhaust design and tune. I don't see it as being cost prohibitive. The only reason I can think to not bother is because it hurts fuel economy, or something else important.
50 HP gain is huge. I'm sure they could design a system that was quiet and still gained at least half that.
    So, why don't they?

you can thank the federal government and the corporations whom own it. In order for the catalytic converters to ‘light off’ quickly enough to pass emissions standards you need the cats right up next to the engine. This doesn’t give the exhaust pulses any kind of scavenging. To compensate for this lack of scavenging Toyota substantially down sizes the exhaust diameter.

simply opening up the exhaust gains power, but low end torque is adversely affected in a big way if you don’t tune scavenging.

a tundra likes 1 3/4” primary tubes that are about 30” long. The stock manifold doesn’t even come close to those stats.

I suspect that if the Toyota engineers could, they would indeed run long tube headers.

Can you use cats with long tubes?
Do they heat up enough to be effective that far away? Or does it just take longer to get to operating temp?

Yes and Yes, you can re-use factory cats on long tubes, need some fab work, and I don't really think it takes that much longer.

Yessir. About 98% of the time there’s zero issues using stock cats.

that said, it’s no easy process as has been mentioned in this thread. The factory cats are a 2” inlet/outlet. You need to open them up to whatever diameter your exhaust is. Long tube headers prefer 3” to make the most power AND low end torque. Most exhaust shops won’t know how to do this job because it’s way outside of the norm.

Not trying to debate with you or argue. I just want to make sure others reading this thread get good first hand information.

it’s quite a bit of work to reuse the factory cats. But it’s well worth the effort. There is no better cat.

How? I e have systems starting at $350. We literally have the least expensive system on the market. We also have the most expensive. And everything in between.

on something as important as exhaust (you hear it every single time you drive your truck) why short yourself?

Move to West Texas so your costs go down .

The price has always been a hurdle for me also. I've been eyeing these since I bought my truck, but I looked again today and about choked. I know all the work and engineering that went into these, but my mind keeps telling me that it's just a few tubes and welds so why are they so much. One day...

You’re paying for the labor to put it all together. And we have a section reflecting our budget systems without Helmholtz resonators. We’ve always offered this, literally the least expensive system on the market, but never had a section on our website for that.

Don’t sell yourself short. Get the budget system for only $350, that is literally the cheapest system on the market for tundras. It sounds good. It doesn’t lose Low end torque. Has minimal drone. More than you can say for systems costing twice as much;)

and if it drones too much, add on a Helmholtz resonator. But you can to that later to spread out the cost, and only if you need one!

A bolt on exhaust is always more than an exhaust shop job. You can get mufflers for only $12, name brand ones too!! Then the tubing is $2 per foot. You’re only paying for labor there too!!

With our systems, everything is hand built. It literally takes all day for 1 man to build one. If we moved to TX I wouldn’t save much money, why would my guys move there to get a pay cut? Stainless tubing is the same cost anywhere in the US, I’ve checked.

I hear people balk at the cost, but that’s it. Never that it didn’t work. Or it drones too much. Or it loses power. Only that it’s too much money. But that’s crazy. We have the least expensive system on the market.
