When I put the Royal Purple in, my rear magnet was loaded and the front had a small amount - all paste, no chunks. When I swapped the RP for Severe Gear, there was almost nothing on the rear and absolutely nothing in front. It had been about 25k miles between changes.

75-90 here. I’m sure 75-140 would be superior but I’m trying to avoid my MPGs dropping to single digits. :D

I spoke with the folks at High Performance Lubrication and inquired about moving from a synthetic 75-90 to a 75-110 or 75-140. Their opinion was that a good 75-90 is superior to the other weights in our trucks, as well as most trucks these days, including 3/4 tons. The 75-110 is a “tweener” oil that is practically irrelevant and the heavier oil is completely unnecessary for most applications.

Incidentally, I also asked about the Toyota spec 75w-85 spec oil and they said it was mostly to be different… but that there is zero issue with using a good 75w90.

Did you do an engine flush before you switched to a thicker viscosity?

I had the exact same experience. After my first 5k service, I got home and popped the hood to discover the oil hadn’t been changed, so I turned right around and marched in to the dealership to show them what they forgot to do. They simply told me no. I asked them if they would change it now instead of 10k. They said no again. I adamantly pressed them to change it at 5k reminding them that I tow and haul, and according to the service manual it was due for a change. They said no again, because I wasn’t towing down a dusty dirt road ALL day EVERY day it didn’t count. So I asked to for the oil and filter to do it myself. They said no. I asked if I could buy the oil and filter to do it myself and they said technically yes, but insinuated that if I wanted to keep my warranty intact I had to follow “Toyota’s” schedule.

But as soon as Toyota care ran out, they slapped a 5k OCI sticker on my truck. When I inquired about what the hey when they wouldn’t change it at 5k earlier, they simply replied “oh, yes we would have done that not problem.” Eehhhhhhhggghgghhgg….

Its for mileage. I've seen a far far greater uplift in mpg changing the gear oil back from 75w-90 to 75w-85 than any difference between 0w-20 vs 5w-30 engine oil. As long as the film strength is sufficient for the application the thinner oil will run cooler as well.

    see sig for mods.....
I really need to change my differential and transfer case fluids..... I just don't have the time. I may just bring it to the dealer. 80K miles...... No towing or abuse, mostly normal driving and highway.

I used 75w-140 in the rear of my Tundra (I tow a lot) and the MPG loss is negligible (unladen). If I told you guys what motor oil I run you'd lose your minds LOL.

The craziest part of your story to me is that after the "no, no, no" incident, you actually went back to that dealer.

I purchased an extended warranty and maintenance plan with the vehicle when I bought it new; I was told I had to have service records in case of a claim so it made sense to pay for the service. Not saying that is true, but that’s what they told me so I did my due diligence. Until it was due for a diffs and t-case and they told me service plan didn’t cover that (despite it being listed in the manual that I showed the finance manager and asked specifically about before purchasing the vehicle or plans). No, I don’t like that dealership. But its the one in town.

I've watched several of this guy's videos and I have respect for his experience. I don't see any substantiation of his claim that piston rings have less tension against the cylinder walls. This may be true but he needs to back this up with data, otherwise I chalk this up to opinion.

Why did I read this whole thread? My head hurts. I'm going to bed now. I'll probably dream about OCI's.
