Been changing oil every 10k. Did this affect my car?

What did it take, 13 years to reach 1M miles? That’s 77k per year. 6400 miles per month. So yes, it went 10k miles between changes, but it also went less than 2months.

Toyota says 5k/6months for my usage regardless of brand of oil. I average 18k/year, so I won’t ever make it to the 6 month mark. I’m happy to change @ 5k. I hope it pisses a LOT of people off. Lol.

I mean Toyota engineers themselves say to change it at 5k under "Special Operating Conditions"
    Source:https://support.toyota.com/s/article/What-are-the-oil-chan-7604?language=en_US

The "Special Operating Conditions" are more people than not, especially with a truck considering towing and driving on dirt roads is one of them. Also anyone who lives where it gets below 32° which is more of America than not. In all reality its more like change at 5k unless you meet the special conditions, like you live in a warm climate and drive mostly highway without hauling anything and never sit in you vehicle while its idling aka sitting in traffic.

Sorry, I wasn't directing it towards anyone.

I've come to the conclusion recently that you can find contradicting info on everything.

FFV manuals clearly state 5k, and less if you put corn in your truck.

    Oil threads never disappoint.

    Oil threads always disappoint.

Ironically my post sums up every oil thread ever, both in its totally opinionated nature, contradiction and factual basis.

it’s just oil. Change it. 10k is probably fine. 5k is probably fine too. Oil weight matters less than people give it credit for. Stay close to the recommended for your model and use conditions and you’ll be fine. Or don’t, but change it every 5-10k and you’ll probably be fine too. Or don’t do either and just hope and pray. Not a lot of Toyota V8’s grenading themselves. Seems to be shitty steel in some valve springs or 1 million miles. Not a lot of other failures here. But not to be a party pooper, let’s continue to argue incessantly about the minutiae of oil and how it’s been around for millions years of years but will expire in your truck after 6 months.

I have a 2013. Drive about 75 miles a day to and from work. Live in a small town so when home, a lot of short trips. But end up with about 22K miles a year. I've just always done 10K. Light comes on at 5 and ride another 5 staring at it!

I know I'm going to get some hate on this, but I use to use M1 synthetic. I've recently switched to Costco's Kirkland branded synthetic. When I pulled up the specs on the label and doing some internet searching, they are very identical. I'm also in a Toyota off-roading club, mostly land cruisers (I got my Tundra after selling my 100 series), and most of the guys in that group confirmed that the Kirkland stuff is pretty much the same as many decent oils...and a little cheaper. And these guys abuse their trucks off-roading.

Do your own homework, but I do not consider it a "cheap alternative" as in, cheap in substance, just price.

What made you leave the LC? I’m resisting the urge to start modding my wife’s 200.

Don’t know I can handle a slope that slippery. I have a problem and wouldn’t be satisfied until it’s on BP51 suspension with skids, sliders, and bumpers. And of course you’ll need the long range tank once you’re that heavy.

It’s a nearly perfect rig. Drop off your trailer at the campsite, and hit the trails. That tiny fuel tank is brutal though.

My 2000 100 series had 230k on the clock. I know, that's nothing for a LC. But things like window motors were slow, a couple door locks didn't work, etc. It had a lot of quirks. But, it was done. 2-3" OME lift, 285s, armor front and rear (made them myself including a double swing out), roof rack with light bar and rear facing pods, rock sliders. I had done all new fluids, plugs, seals, and entire cooling system/radiator. I suppose I would have just waited for the alternator or something else to occur, but it was a labor of love, and I was tired of labor. I probably fixed it on trail a couple of times. It was a lot of fun and NEVER got me stuck. Although, I had recovered my fair share of mini-vans and Ford F150s...(yes...several). But going from the LC to my 2017 Tundra was a world of difference. Newer, more reliable and just something that the wife didn't mind driving for long trips was worth it. Taking an old LC on a trip with the wife, and praying nothing would breakdown, was stressful. Now watch my Tundra do something on my next trip (smh)

So cool. Man, I have become completely enamored with Cruisers since buying my LX. I would love an 80. But I totally get it; the older you go, the higher the time commitment to stay on top of everything, especially when you take it off the beaten path.

    see sig for mods.....
In normal driving patterns, I change oil every 5K and filters every 10. This change I will go 10K mainly because the last 7K has been all highway. I will finish my last 1K mile round trip on Presidents day weekend, will be at 10k and change. I generally use a high quality synthetic 5W30. Currently running Pennzoil Platinum, next up is Edge. Hopefully back to normal driving habits and once a year......

Not a fuel economy thread, but I reset my average fuel mileage over an oil change interval and am holding at 17.4 over the last 9K miles (6K since Christmas)....... My budget will be thankful for the break!

I suppose I could have kept my 100 series and spent money on the door locks, window motors, etc. Not cheap but cheaper than the car payment on my Tundra. Just not sure I'd be as calm taking it on a 1000 mile trip. It was far and away better at wheeling though. Shorter wheelbase (slightly) and narrower overall, so it handled trails much better. Granted, my Tundra is stock except for the 285s. But the overall size is a little more of a challenge. You lose power in the 100 series as it has the 4.6. But it was more than enough for wheeling in areas that I could not take my Tundra.

Why not change filter every oil change? I understand the cost savings but I'm assuming the time savings is the bigger reason...not having to remove skid plate, etc. It's a pain, I understand. But I think my last oil change, the plate took me maybe a few minutes to take it off. And the filter is probably $5??

You rinse them? Aggressive. Kudos for your environmental responsibility on the re-use. Figure just a quick blowout from the air compressor would suffice. Or maybe a wipe down.....

I should probably mention that the "solvent" is gasoline mixed with forever chemicals and the rinse station is the northern shore of Ten Mile crick.

That may negate any environmental benefits of the re-use then. We’ll form a subcommittee to do a 5 year impact study. Report should be ready in 7 years.

Sounds like a net-zero scenario. The gasoline has carbon in it so my process, via the transitive property, is carbon-zero!

I will now take possession of many government subsidy cash money chex, plz.
