If you have tow hooks you may safely go 10K mile oil changes.

I follow the recommendation from Toyota for my use case. I change the oil every 5000 miles.

I saw a video where the guy talked about Super Tech (WalMart) synthetic oil. He said WalMart buys oil in bulk and it could be Pennzoil or Mobil 1. He said you can tell which one by the container. Last time I changed my oil I used it because they did not have what I normally buy.

it's a long video but very very good information. I started doing 5k interval after I watched this.

5k. mine is pretty dark after 5k. i only put about 7-8k miles on my truck per year as it's not my daily. but when i use it, it's mainly for hunting/fishing and camping. not the hardest miles but the oil is usually pretty dark. oil is cheap

Funny you mention that. I just got my truck at the end of 2021 and I had a year of free oil changes. I put about 10k on my truck so it did work out to a little less than 5k between changes but I noticed the last sticker they put on, they only put it for 5k out from the mileage at the time. It's funny, the previous sticker actually had a higher mileage than the new one they put on. Lol. It's like, yeah, now that they aren't free, you'll say 5k but when they were free, it was 10k or 6 months.

Going forward, there is no way I'd go 10k.

Why not ask a less controversial topic like which oil should you use OP ?

Just kidding - it’s a common debate and everyone has an opinion. Here’s mine:

    - Change oil as often as you can reasonably afford and as your use dictates with the best quality product that YOU trust.

    - Everyone will tell you XYZ brand is better because….the truth is most are very similar and a few are legit not as good. The price paid has very little effect on the quality of name brands - the cheap stuff is probably cheap for a reason and the super pricey stuff is expensive for a reason and that reason is likely profiteering and advertising.

    - 5k for conventional oil under any use/condition - 2x yearly.
    - 5k synthetic under dirty conditions/heavier use and short trips - 2x yearly. Even more if towing 50% of those miles shorter distances frequently.
    - You can get by with 10k synthetic on highway miles - light use - but likely best to do it at least 2x yearly.

Bottom line / if you can DIY - it’s a $25 investment in your vehicle and takes less than an hour. No reason to cheap out in a vehicle and too much that can go wrong.

My old Chevy - I changed it 2-3x yearly and I probably only put 1500 miles on it before each change. Overkill - likely - but it was a 2012 Silverado 1500 with a V6 that was notorious for mechanical issues if you didn’t keep fresh oil in them. Better to “waste” a little oil than replace an engine to me - and I’m a lot better at changing oil than doing “real” mechanical work.

I agree with you Shamrock. Except for the $25 investment? $3.125 a quart, not including the oil filter?

The only thing I'd add is if you're willing to spend $50,000 or more on a truck, why go cheap on fluids??

If you've been using your truck as a DD it's probably fine to stick with 10k. Best way to determine that is an oil analysis.

I have about 14,500 miles on my 2021 right now. I've DIY'd the maintenance from day one. First oil change was at 2500 miles on the odometer and the second was at 7500 miles on the odometer with 5w30 Pennzoil Platinum. Globally the exact same 3UR-FE uses 5w30; 0w20 is to help gives these big beasts a fuel mileage bump. I noticed a drop of about 1 mpg while empty but the engine is a lot quieter with the 5w30. I tow a 5k travel trailer about half the time and while towing there was no difference in MPG between 0w20 and 5w30. I'm going to do an oil change at 15,000 (total of 7500 on the PP 5w30) and send a sample to Blackstone for analysis. If it comes back good to go running through the heat of summer and cold of winter I'll likely keep 7500 miles intervals.

The 3UR-FE is supposed to be pretty easy on oil. Between the oil cooler and nearly 8 quarts of oil this is not surprising.

I just ordered 9 quarters of 5w30 amsoil. I would think something with a higher second number might be best for the temps I get down here in southern AZ, but none of the oils listed on the spec pages I've seen go above 30.

But it's better than 20! Will see how it goes...

You are certainly evidence of that.

People who use their truck as a truck will meet the maintenance guide’s definition of “special operating conditions” and will require a 5,000mi OCI.

The spec sheet I posted shows 15w40 and 20w50 right on it. I have run 15w40 in the summer no problem. I wouldn't suggest 20w50 unless you're in Saudi Arabia though.

I crawl under my truck at each gas station refuel and change it right then and there.

5000 mile oil is way dirtier and less protective than changing at 500 miles - FACT.

    It’s just money!

Great question. I get it through Amazon with their subscription option. Always carry 12-18 qts in the bed.

Forgot to also mention when that first maintenance minder light comes on 7-10k miles, I head straight back to the dealer. It's time to trade it in for a new Tundra. That engine is cooked! So much wear at that point vs new.

    It's just money!

Yes, changing at 0.5k miles is unnecessary. That doesn’t mean that changing at 5k miles is unnecessary.
If you tow, use a car top carrier, drive while heavily loaded, take less than 5 mile long trips in freezing temps, drive on dirt roads or dusty roads, excessively idle your truck, or use 5w20 oil, Toyota recommends 5k/6mo OCI per the maintenance guide.

This is also right in Toyotas FAQ
    Source: https://support.toyota.com/s/article/What-are-the-oil-chan-7604?language=en_US

People just dont want to hear it and Toyota doesn't really want to advertise it for two main reasons. People are lazy and cheap and dont want to change it more often and number two, they would have to foot the bill for more oil changes on cars that they sell advertised with free maintenance. Will you destroy your engine not changing it every 5k, no. Will your engine be cleaner and more likely to last longer if you do, yes. To the knuckle head talking about changing their oil every 500 miles to be a smart ass. You're actually correct, changing your oil every 500 would be even better than every 5k but its about cost and benefit, obviously changing every 500 miles is a crazy cost with out much benefit, but changing every 5k provides a solid benefit with a minimal cost. I could really care less at what milage anyone decides to change their oil, if you want to pay for an oil analysis that costs as much as an oil change to hear that you can change your oil every 20k, go for it. But for people to tell others they shouldn't change it sooner is just silly.

Talk to any professional engine builder, precisely zero recommend going even 5k on your very first oil change. There is a lot of very fine metal particulars floating around in the oil from all the new internal parts seating and breaking in. There’s also a lot of engine assembly lube getting washed off the parts and ending up in the oil. Can you be sure the oil filter is catching all of the metal parts? I’d rather spend an extra $100 to change the oil a few extra times when an engine is new to ensure a long life span. Oil is cheap, engines are not.

I don't see anything wrong with that, if he can use his knowledge to make him dough while keeping me educated, so be it. The subject matter is why would one need to change oil every 5k and he makes several solid/valid points. I can careless of how much money he makes from his youtube channel.

Agreed. It’s a free market, and mechanics generally are paid poorly so good on him for creatively using his knowledge to better his and his family’s financial situation. Just because he’s making money doesn’t make him lose credibility either. He’s not a BS artist, the guy is very knowledgeable. It’s pretty easy to sniff out the bull shitters when you have been a technician yourself, and I don’t get any of that from him. His channel never would have grown as large as it is if he was full of crap.

Just for reference, here’s some (not all) of the larger of the metal shards that were caught by the oil filter and settled in the bottom of the oil filter housing on a Tacoma with only 500 miles on the odometer. That’s just what I could pour into the catch pan, the rest had to be blasted out with brake parts cleaner. The oil that dripped off the filter itself looked like metallic black paint. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want that floating around in the engine of a new vehicle I just paid 40-$50k for.
