Anyone have dinning tables that are home made? I might be the only one that gets excited over stupid shit like this :D
This afternoon a good friend called and said our dinning room table was almost complete.
I immediately ran over to check it out (mashing on throttle of my new group-buy DirtyDeeds system) LOL!
We’ve been waiting for nearly two years. My buddy logged an area next to a golf course that had some huge white oak trees a few years back, and had the trees milled (live edge). My company moved the equipment around for him in trade :)
It took quite a while to dry, and finally the top is done.
The bases will be made of metal and painted black.
(Excuse the very happy wife that’s been hounding me about a table before Thanksgiving!)

Ours is the slab I’m point at - and my wife is ecstatic over :D

Beautiful slabs! I’m so envious. Can’t wait till I can get my shop built and get back to woodworking and ornamental iron work. Any chance of there being a spare slab?

Ahhh! You’re Oregon!! I’m sure my guy is waaaay too expensive (he mentioned $1200 a tabletop which I would never pay!) but I’ll check! lol. I think he’s using all the slabs (had a trailer full - but I’ll still ask him) for his builds. He builds ridiculously priced houses around this area and had a home in Parade of Homes this year. He helped me with ideas for our house a few years back.
3 years ago I made a trip from Ridgefield down to Salem for some walnut slabs and the guy was priced amazingly! You just have to dry your own stuff.
I came back with a bed full of black walnut.
I attempted to dry the book-matched slabs myself, and due to a huge knot they warped horribly :-(
I ended up making a bench, and a shelf out of some of the wood. I still have 2 X 12ft pieces (warped now) that I plan on making benches and small end tables.
I finished this entry way bench a few months back - but have to throw larger legs under it.

He said it’s a 4 person job to move the slab (it’s just the slab I’m pointing at) and then 3 frame pieces underneath move solo and bolt together once the slab is in the dinning room.
It’s 11 feet long by 42-44” wide, so it’s pretty damn heavy!

Nice table! Did I read correctly that this guy is located in Salem? Curious if he has any smaller slabs as I can fabricate my own supports

    Thanks!
No, this guy I’m just now getting my slab from is a friend/builder out of Vancouver WA and it’s not his hobby or business (he owns his own custom home building business). He just cleared a bunch of nice timber for building a development and I scored a nice slab throughout his process.
I did however pickup a load full of Black Walnut from a guy out of Salem OR.
I found him on CL, and his prices were amazing! I didn’t dry most of the truck-load of wood property so it’s my fault my slabs warped, but he sells a lot and it looked like great product years back.
I’ll see if I can dig up a link if he’s still actively selling. Here’s a few pieces I picked up (the one worked over piece was finished for our security/electrical room closet).

    Pretty cool project!

We plan on one of these dining and coffee tables.

For the do-it-yourselfers, I have seen some bad ass furniture made in some garages from local beetle kill slabs.

Cut down the center, turn true center edge to the outside, use epoxy resin to make a river bed. Seen some amazing tables.

This guy makes tables just down the road from my house using beetle kill pine.

That’s an amazing table! I love seeing large natural pieces of wood used for tables or furniture. I have a client who wanted wood butcher block tops in their kitchen. 50AD8F8C-E5D3-4289-80C6-4F912F128FF1.jpg

That’s beautiful!!!! Yea on that bench I made I had to use epoxy resin to fill the knot-holes. I could never do an entire surface out of one without a million bubbles showing. Takes some skill! LOL

I’ve wondered about the bubbles. I wonder what can eliminate the bubbles and have a crystal clear finish?

    I need a shop.

I know with varnish it’s all about application. Choosing the right brush, and really limiting your brush strokes. Too many strokes creates bubbles. I think temperature is taken into consideration, along with many other things beyond my talent grade LOL

ETA - I hear ya!! here’s my Fing shop I took a pic of earlier this am!!! As you can see, it doesn’t have a roof and we’re going into winter! I need to finish this thing up ASAP. It’s taken 4 months to get where it is
Once it’s finished I’ll start on those walnut slabs I pictured above. :D

That is awesome! I just finished a table for out breakfast nook, but it doesn’t have quite as much wow factor. We needed to replace me Grandma’s table, but I hated the idea of getting rid of it. So, I made a butcher block top to match our counter tops. Lots of sanding and sealing.

Eliminating the bubbles is easy. Apply the epoxy under water, the bubbles will float off and when it dries it looks smooth.
