Do you think a new rear end is the only option?

Go after whoever maintains the roads in the municipality, If the pot hole is that bad. When was the last time you serviced the diff? I would think it would of had popped the tire and damaged the rim before a bearing.

Pot hole just finished that off...agree it looks like its been failing...tire and rim would have been damaged if the pot hole was the culprit by itself.

That hurts man. That axle housing is not worth saving in my opinion.

Depends on how the rest of your truck looks is how I would proceed. You might find a junkyard jewel and do a swap for relatively inexpensive repair. I would probably go this route first. Even find an axle at a distant junk yard and have it shipped. In the past, I have had new axles shipped to my door for very reasonable prices.

You could pull the axle and see if a differential shop would cut off the flange and weld a new one on (probably both sides), but this gets pretty spendy and I don't even know what the 3rd member looks like. A new housing is around 503.00, and you need a new axle shaft, master install kit, and we still don't know the extent of all the damage.

I would probably eBay it and get back on the road. Might wanna look into a trailer to keep the weight off the semi-floating hub assembly. Prolonged heavy weight probably caused this.

That ebay auction is a real good deal especially with the free freight. Its also a 2010 which will have the better cross shaft retaining bolt. I paid 1500 and had to pick it up 4 hours away for a 2010 complete axle last year.

Ha!! I was just thinking the same thing. How many bales were in the truck? 2 wire or 3 wire?

There’s a special place in hell for 3 wire bales.

Honestly even the smaller bales will kick your ass, it just takes a little longer.

How do you know when it’s a good time to replace the bearings? I have a 2015 with 100k miles and I haul a lot. I would love to prevent this. How would you know if one is failing?

You can jack up each rear tire and try move wheel back and forth and see if there is play...it shouldn’t rock at all but even that might not tell you anything.

There is no way to really know without tearing it all down and by then its wise to replace the bearings anyway.

All depends on use and maintenance. Like anything, there can be situations where parts wear prematurely and through normal use they fail and then there are times when something has been used at or above its max design limits and it finally takes a knee. Not suggesting either way in this case.

For the most part the Toyotas are tough and designed well...I wouldn’t sweat it...make sure you stay on top of routine mnx (diff fluid changes) and don't overload the rear axles. If you are lacking on either, then you could be working toward a impromptu rear end failure.

    Again, it just depends.

Technically vibration analysis via frequency spectrum is how you get ahead of a failure. I do this frequently at my job...

However for personal use vehicles there is no cost effective vibration analysis method (that I'm aware of).

    For heavy use

Check gear oil level frequently. This is of course so easy to do on rear wheel drive Toyotas its dumb not to.
    Change gear oil level frequently.
Consider an upgrade on gear oil ( another thread, another day)
When rotating tires or inspecting brakes, check for excessive play.
    Plan a preventive replacement.

Definitely. The pot hole was simply the coup de grace. That spline wear didn't happen overnight. I don't see anything left of the bearing, unless that is the inner race fused to the axle. Must have been making a heck of a racket. Failure Analysis: "Lack of lubrication".

Rolling element bearings must be replaced when they fail or wear out. Attempting to anticipate bearing failure and replacing pre-emptively (preventative maintenance) is not a reasonable endeavor for the average vehicle owner. Vibration spectral analysis has probably finally moved beyond laboratory and diagnosis services of 40 years ago, but wide-area screening of the largest plants is still expensive and difficult to justify.

Too many factors are involved in any service application to predict bearing life with any kind of accuracy. Once a bearing failure has begun, life expectancy can be predictable with the right instrumentation.

Thanks all for the good advice. How often would you recommend changing the gear oil when used a lot for hauling? Also out of curiosity what does it cost roughly to replace those bearings. If I took it to toyota to have them do it

Ding ding ding! There’s the smoking gun.

6000 lbs + 3000 lbs for trailer. I’m just assuming you have a HD trailer. My 20’ 14K rated trailer is 3750 lb empty.

9000 lbs is within the Tundras tow ratings, but this is where you went wrong:

2014 DC probably has a payload rating of 1500-1700 max and that’s being generous (might wanna check the drivers door sill for actual rating). The hay just absorbed all your payload rating with you inside.

Now you have a estimated 7500 lb trailer behind you. Depending on how this was loaded and if correct tongue weights were had, you most likely had another 750-825 lbs added to the payload of your truck.

~2300 lbs of payload is what you most likely had, but I would probably guess a bit more depending on what size trailer you have.

I’m not even going to really get into the lift and bigger tires for towing. This just multiplied your problem. Do people have lifts that tow? Yes. Plenty of them do it safely. Difference is they are not towing that kind of weigh/payload.

If you plan on hauling like this you need the following:

-Take one less bail, trailer only use.
-Purchase another truck that has a full floating rear axle. You have a semi floating rear axle. The differences are one has all the weight on a bearing hub and not the axle shaft, the other has all the weight on the axle shaft/bearings that ride on a flanged end.

You could change differential oil weekly and would still have this problem. This is why equipment has ratings.

Use the factory recommended servicing. The real issue is overloading. If you do that a lot, then there’s no way of telling when that ticking time bomb will go off. I would do my diffs and transfer case every 30k.
