Where would you go, driving, within 1000 miles from central Texas?

    Week long trip in August.

Someone edited the title to say in Texas. Original post was camping in August. I’m not camping in Texas in August lol

With the temps being 102 each day and it’s only the beginning of summer this might be the best place to camp in Texas. 11832DAE-6948-454E-A400-B60A185BCE44.jpg

In all seriousness here are a few parks to look up.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park. North in the pan handle. It’s like a miniature version of the Grand Canyon. It also known for a live outdoor amphitheater western show. It’s great for families.

    B79CD386-A52C-4831-8CBC-202BADEB1BA8.jpg
Lost Maples State Park. Known for its maple trees. Central Texas. Very popular in the fall.

Kermit Sand Dunes in West Texas is great for playing in the sand with your truck or ATVs.

Hidden Falls UTV park near Marble Falls is great if you want to off-road.

I know more but this is just a few off the top of my head. Also look up zip lines and tree houses. There are a few places that have tree houses and zip lines that you can spend the night in the trees.

Hidden falls is great! The dust from riding there is horrible though! I try to go when I know it just rained. Lol

Northern NM would be another great option(Carson national forest).

Tent/backpacking. I think NM is probably the best option, just have to narrow down specifics

We are planning on backpacking as well, unless the little one joins. Then, it will just be tent camping at a campground.

Great ideas. But I thought the Kermit Sand Dunes were closed for fracking?

    Did it reopen?

Don’t blame you. My vote is for the Taos area of NM, then head up to CO. Beware of disease-carrying ticks, though.

All I heard is that they closed permanently for sand mining to support fracking operations. And yeah, all that sand is going to be mined.

Thanks for the info so far. I’d like to hit the downhill mountain biking at angel fire, anyways. Anywhere specific to hike or see in NM that’s worth a mention?
