Awesome! Hopefully you can make it longer than I did before tearing your new machine apart. :anonymous:

You won’t believe me - but this is following Honda’s instructions to add their horn. I think I’m now a qualified tech.

Oh, I believe you. That's part of why I bought mine with the street legal kit installed. I would be the guy that has an extra bolt or two after reassembly.

I only had to drill and tap for one bumper bolt that wouldn’t go back in.

About damn time! Looks awesome, those are some meaty tires too. Drop the tire pressure, setup the fox tune, and go yeet that skeet.

Yep…. Took 4 months to get here. Stock tires are 32s. :) Now I’m just trying to not drain the wallet with mods.

I bottomed out prerunning at KOH in some trophy truck ruts, fucked up the gearbox again despite having a 1/4" aluminum skid, so now I get to try and seal it again :D this time I have it nose up to try and keep all the gear oil away from the cracks so I can weld and rtv it, then will put some 1/4" spacers between the skids and frame and then get some 1/2" UHMW skids, hopefully that will finally stop the rear end leaking.

Yikes! Have you looked into beefing up the suspension to prevent the bottoming out? Also, what is UHMW?

That pic scared me. I thought I was seeing it after it had teetered off the lift. Took a second for my eyes to catch the straps holding it.

I have the pairs of lift arms locked parallel to each other, the straps was mainly to make sure it wouldn't roll over backwards :D but the tires are sitting in the cradle of the pair of arms, so it's about as safe as normally lifting something.

UHMW is just the dense plastic the stock skids and body panels are made from. I can run the suspension stiffer, I have it at the softest setting, but where I had issue was the ruts on the race course were so deep I was literally dragging the bottom since the ruts formed a W shape, so combine that with a little bump and regardless how your suspension is setup you're bottoming out, which is what happened to me--plus I think there was a rock in the silt where I hit since the front of the skid got ripped backwards and turned into a shovel :D

Damn. That's quite the adventure. Maybe you need a steel skid that has a but of upward lip/curve and the front so there isn't an edge down low to get caught? Or bigger lift and tires.

That's how the aftermarket skids are set up, 3/8-1/2" plastic and a bent up edge to cup the body and try to avoid it being ripped off. Hopefully between that and the 1/4" aluminum skid I have beneath the gearbox already, I won't crack the case again  you're right lifting it and bigger tires would help, but that is its own host of trade offs I don't want to deal with

I did a ton of reading on forums….people seemed to like both and both had good comments about towing….. just have to see. Since this has a 5200 lb axle, I should be fine as far as weight carrying capacity goes. At 14ft the X3 should sit really close to over the axle…… or I can back it in. Going to do some load testing tomorrow…… any insight would be great if you have experience.

For me the only relevant difference shows up when you have a bad day and lose a tire. If you are cruising down the road at 40-50 MPH and a tire shreds, on a single axle trailer you might be out a wheel, whereas on a tandem you still have another tire on that side to keep things from getting too gnarly. Purely personal preference.

As for backing it on the trailer, I wouldn't. The engine is in the rear of your SxS, and that is where the most weight will be. I'd try to put the rear wheel just behind the fender of the trailer. About where I scribbled it below. That should keep a good amount of weight on the trailer axle, but not make you too light in the tongue. If it wobbles on your test run, I'd just keep moving it forward until you are where you wanna be. I'd put the front tires against the front rail of the trailer before I backed it on. Especially if you ever plan to put a windshield on. Lots specifically say not to tow the vehicle backwards with a windshield, so it's better to just build the habit of pulling straight on the trailer than risk damaging an accessory you buy in the future.

The issue is the distance is so short from a front D Ring to a tie down point on the X3, that I can’t get a strap to tighten. Are you guys using tire bonnets or another method to tie down?

U can criss cross from front of trailer to rear axle, then front a arm to a rear point on trailer. That'll keep it from moving forward or back, side to side.

That's great to hear, glad I was able to help. BTW congrats on the X3. Great choice. I almost went that way too but decided I could get a little more work out the Commander.

As you've found a good way to tie down with @mgm16trdpro's help I won't worry about the question, but had to say: Good grief! That thing is huge! The tires look like they are almost interchangeable with your truck. When I recommended the rear wheel placement I thought you've have at least a foot up front, but there really wasn't any other way to put it on there than right up to the front rail. That monster is gonna be loads of fun for you.

Quick question, when you say freeway test run, how fast did you test it? Only asking because most stock trailer tires aren't rated for speeds much beyond 60-65 MPH. A short test up to 75-80 is unlikely to do any harm, but if you head out on a trip and run those speeds on a lower rated tire.... well, you might find out first hand why I prefer tandem axles to singles. Can't tell you how many trailers I pass on the interstate with a blown tire, and I would bet that a majority of them were running full tilt on tires that aren't rated for it, heated the tires, and :boom:! You'll also get better MPG at 60-65 vs 75-80, if that matters to you.

Safe travels, and keep us posted on how you like it through the break in period, and then when you can really cut it loose!
