I've been a auto tech for 25+ years and a Toyota tech for the last 5. Hats off for Lotsoftoys for taking on this challenging thread. I've been off work for about 6 months because of carpal tunnel surgery that was performed in both wrists. I specialize in front end work and alignments. Now that I have some time off I may be willing to contribute if you need the help.

OK, here is one for you mechanics. When I crank my steering wheel to the left to make a U-turn, about the middle of the turn I get a popping noise. I have taken it to 3 different mechanics, first 2 couldn't find anything and the last one got me for new CV joints. Problem is, it still makes the sound. Could someone please give me some reliable insight so I know where to go with this

Does it have a TRD skid plate? Regardless take down the skid plate and try the U turn again. Sand and Rocks can get trapped between the skid plate and frame and as the trucks frame flexes can cause this.

It would be very hard for a tech to diag a clunk\twang on a forum. Have it checked out and don't ignore it. Leaving things usually costs more in the long run. Obvious things to check are rocks in the skis plate, front end check (ball joints, tie rods, struts and coils, a stabilizer bar). Also make sure the wheels are tight.

Wassup man. Truck is an 08 5.7. It doesn't overheat but gets warm at highway speeds, typically 70-75. It creeps a little past the halfway mark. It cools down to normal when i floor it, or if i run the heat. Is this the thermostat?
    Thank you.

Same thing happened to my 2017 Tundra, and they wouldn't warranty it. I'm still under warranty, with #23K miles. Said it was a cosmetic part. So I ordered the part and need to install it myself.

    Lost track after #1.
I would contact Toyota corporate and square it away thru them. Many folks here have had to do that when the dealership tries to slither out of honoring warranties.

Hello. I have a 2014 tundra sr 2x4 4.6l. It has 174,000 miles on the odo. At random the truck will not accelerate or open throttle when depressing the accelerator pedal. It will only idle. I have three tps codes popping up, and a transmission slip code. P0121, P0123, P2135, and P0894. After resetting the computer by disconnecting the battery, the truck will run fine (with more throttle response than usual) for about a day. Then at some random stop light, it will no longer accelerate. I replaced the accelerator pedal. Worked for a day, then same problem. Looking for some insight.

I had the same symptoms on my previous truck (non-Toyota) and it was the throttle position sensor.

On that A/C knock after it sit for a few it most likely lack of lubrication , when the system is run day it wel lubricated as the refrigerant carries the lubricant through the system , my educated guess is when it sit all the the oil settles to the bottom of the compressor , evaporator and condenser and it takes a bit to get the compressor good and lubricated again , especially because the compressor is a bit older not unlike a engine with 150-200k . Like I said just an educated guess .

    Broken transmission mount!

See the attached photo, circled is the area that is broken or separated.

How critical is that portion of the mount and could it the cause of a shudder I feel around 45mph?

    Thank you for any insight

Unsolicited opinion: Ya, I'd get that fixed/replaced, even if it isn't the origin of your shudder. Additionally, it eliminates that as the cause.

Hi everyone, Not sure I have an issue but thought I would throw this out there in case anyone else has this issue or if it is considered normal. I have a 2018 1794 CrewMax and I have been experiencing an inconsistent output of light at each light bulb in my truck. This is wholistic in that is happens all the time (most noticeable at night) with all lights inside and outside the vehicle. This occurs during idling, accelerating and decelerating. The voltmeter on the dash is bouncing up and down between ~13-15V. Any suggestions? Anyone else experiencing this?

I'm looking for the hitch electronic connection bracket bolt. I took it off for a second to do some rust control on the bracket and ended up shearing it off bolting it back on. I know the head is 10mm but can't figure out what it is.

Hello everyone. I tried searching and only found results for greasing the driveshaft. Anybody have a diy guide on re torqueing the propeller bolts? Thanks in advance.

Nothing special, make sure the flanges are clean then torque to spec using a cross pattern.

2018 SR5 CM with the front bench/column shifter.
I've got a problem with the shift lock and the local dealer says they fixed it but it's still clicking. If the vehicle is in park and I depress the brake pedal, there is a click in the steering column, which I believe is the normal sound of the shift lock.

The problem is that it intermittently will click when I'm driving. Sometimes it does it, sometimes it doesn't. Should I just suck it up and live with it?

I know that with my column shift it sometimes feels like the shifter isn’t all the way in gear. Even though the trans drives normal the shifter doesn’t fell like its all the way seated in its slot. I don’t hear any clicking though.

Check the connector at the brake pedal switch and make sure it's seated in properly. If it looks fine I'll check a wiring diagram. What year and trim is your truck?

I posted to the general forum but I figured I post in here as well.

    I just purchased my first tundra 2016 5.7 75k

I have noticed a slight/faint diesel tick/knock when sitting at idle. It’s this normal? It’s very minuscule but enough that spending 23k on a truck I don’t want to hear any noise.

thoughts? Am I just paranoid? Or is it normal for higher mileage motors to develope a slight knock.

FYI I’m pretty sure it’s not injectors or valves because I hear it mostly in the exhaust and behind the motor and inside the cab

Thank you. So there are two sets of bolts needed to be torqued, front and rear driveshaft?

Four bolts on each flange. To be honest with you nobody torques them at the dealer. We just bolt them up tight but make sure the bolts are clean and add a little blue loctite. Make sure the flanges are clean.
