IMO, the answer is yes. Granted there are cheap new cars out there, but some prices are steep for new vehicles in general. For someone just getting started and wants a nice car, it can get expensive quick. All of the features being added to cars and trucks, like rear view cameras, BSM, etc., while adding safety, also add costs making it harder for folks to buy new cars. In my case, I wanted a semi-basic truck and only got the SR5 to keep costs down and only get what I needed out of my truck (roll down back window was a MUST as well as the 38 gal tank. Oh, and my bed stickers!). I decided to GTS and read where the average auto loan is $30K with a term of 5.7 years.

What say you, are cars now getting to expensive?

    Too many to list
I strongly agree, used but not abused.

I have seen some cars with 60k miles in the worse condition then the ones with 150k miles. I mostly buy used cars from private sellers. Purchased some expensive cars (over 100k) just by looking at the pictures and talking to the owners over the phone. Sellers personality tells a lot about their cars.

They are too expensive for 2 reasons:
    1. Government mandated emissions and safety equipment is really expensive. Anyone who has had to change an AIP on their own dime knows that all too well.

    2. Manufactures have found out that there is almost no limit to how much the average consumer will spend on a pickup that has all of those bells and whistles. Raptors being sold for 90K, some F350 configurations coming close to 90k as well.

    Yes, too expensive.

Sell me one with no nannies (traction control, ABS, etc.), a standard transmission, manual transfer case shift and skip all the interior light delay, fog lights only come on with low beams, self dimming rear view, tire pressure sensor, etc.

A.C., electric locks/windows and enough power to tow.

And to think my buddy bought a near brand new Platinum F250 in 2015 for $63,000. Had maybe 3,000 miles on it. I did that build a truck deal online a few months back, $78,000 for a 2017 F350 King Ranch

That's part of the problem, legally cars cant be built if they omitted half of that crap. Heck, even rear backup cameras are mandatory for all vehicles built in the US from May 2018 and on. The car manufacturers are selling it as a bonus, but the only reason they are offering it is because they will have no choice in a year.

I'm with @BlueFalconActual. Emissions has risen prices so high. Hell, the exhaust system on my Duramax from Turbo back is ~3500.00, and it doesn't even have a muffler. The DEF tank/Heater and pump is 1600.00. On my buddies F350, the DEF injection system is over 6k. EGR system I have no idea what that costs, but I have seen them on for sale used for 800.00+. Then you have the computer controls to monitor all this crap. There is a reason I don't DD my current truck. I want it to last for as long as possible for doing the things I enjoy (towing campers/ Jeeps, work like hauling wood or landscaping materials). Currently I have 9250 miles on my GMC, and 85% of those miles are towing. 8% is snow duties and the rest is traveling without towing something.

My wife purchase for my birthday in 2004 this truck. IMG_1848.jpg

The cost on this 04.5 Dodge CTD 2500 SLT Plus truck was 34600.00 plus taxes. After 2007 when DPF filters were mandated, the cost of diesel trucks went through the roof. (Kinda like ultra low sulfur diesel did in the US, so now the petroleum companies could sell on a world wide market...and of course for emissions)
Then the prices went up again when Urea /DEF and SCRs came into play. Depending on manufacturers, that was in 2011-2013.
I started looking at diesels again in early 2015. Essentially the same truck was double the cost. What was I getting for my money?

-Interiors are a hell of a lot nicer.
-Load rating has gone up, but with some restrictions (and the big reason I went 1 ton).
-TPMS on some trucks, my 16' doesn't have it (there is a God! Small miracles)
-2012 was a year to remember. All vehicles were now to have a traction control system and a "black box" for monitoring.
-fuel exonomy hasn't gone up with all the emissions crap. My 04.5 would constantly get 21+ mpg at hauling ass speeds. My current DMax has seen the best of 18.3 mpg at the same hauling ass speeds, and I now have an extra gear in my transmission than I did back then. To be fair, I have never been on the open road with my DMax empty with a full tank being used. My truck rarely gets started unless towing is needing or snow is on the ground.
    -More airbags.

So what have I gained to cost 30k+ more? Labor costs haven't gone up that much.

We are in a very interesting time. I work with emissions controlled equipment on a daily basis, just on a bigger scale. I operate power plants, for those of you that don't know, and my sister plant 1/4 mile away just spent 240+ million dollars on a scrubber system for emissions. Where do you think that cost is made up? Yep, your electric utility bill. Funny, it was just announced today in fact a 5% raise in electrical rates for our municipality owned utility company.

So yeah, I do believe emissions is a huge part in the cost of vehicles today. Remember back when trucks were cheap and the family sedan was expensive? In High School a new Chevy Silverado 1500 was under 12000.00, and it was a fully loaded truck. Realistically you could be in one for under 10k. Never in my mind did I ever think I would be looking at paying 80k dollars for a truck unless it had Peterbuilt stamped on the front.

I would have loved to buy used but the prices here in NY were crazy high and in some cases higher than new. Getting $5,000 off sticker on a new Tundra made sense. Otherwise it would have been a used truck purchase.

This is the same thing I experienced in WA. Toyota trucks on the used market are outrageously priced in my area. It just made more sense to get a new truck as I plan on keeping for a very long time.

And to answer the original question, yes cars and trucks are far too expensive these days.

The answer is hell yes. My wife took her car to a local ford dealer for recall work. While I'm waiting I checked out the Raptors. Stupid expensive, $69K MSRP, and then a sticker added by the dealer, market adjustment, $7500!!! So for $76K plus the taxes and shit you can have a pick up truck.

Yep, i seriously thought about buying an old truck and doing a frame off restoration instead of buying my 2016 to get away from federal mandates. I decided I did not want to be forced to fix it myself since I can't find mechanics anymore just "technicians".

I'm sure it won't be long before buying a new car or truck will take 10 years in payments to pay off. The cost is getting crazy. I don't even want to go into the completely outrageous price for a house these days. Buying a house is pretty much a pipe dream now. What is cheap anymore?

Unhealthy food is cheap.. eating healthy cost an arm and a leg nowadays. Double cheeseburger $1 salad $8 smh.. you're right about loans.. people are already doing loans for 6-8 years now, just to keep the payments lower than $700

I completely agree with this until I bought my tundra. I was looking for a slightly used tundra. Everything I looked at was 4 to 5 years old with 60 to 90,000 miles and in the $30,000 price range. And I found my tundra for 36,900 and it just seemed like a no-brainer to spend an extra seven grand and get a seat with no farts and my first brand new truck ever. Now maybe my truck is a little more basic than the ones I was looking at but it is brand new. And it's mine. But prior to this all of my vehicles were used when I bought them.

I bought a 2006 trailblazer SS for $24,000 in 2008 with 30,000 miles on it. It was basically a $40,000 plus vehicle new. When I sold it with 80,000 on the clock in 2015 I got 10 grand trade in. At most bluebook showed 12 grand private party. I lost $14,000 for driving a vehicle 50,000 miles. It was in top condition when I got rid of it.

So I do think your statement is true with almost every other car manufacture or special edition vehicles. I think it's a little different with Toyota unless you can find the right deal.

Not discounting some states have crazy markups. Every situation is different.
In Louisiana, things were very different. If it made more sense to buy new, I would have gone that route in a second.
