So yeah, @scaryspidermomma, that fun girls’ Super Bowl slumber party we were planning. I can’t make it after all....
Ugh! I used to crawl under houses and into attics (and up utility poles and high roofs) years ago working for a CCTV company. I worked through all sorts of fears. The most freaked out I ever got was a house that crawled with cockroaches- it was horrible!

But, I’m thinking, if I opened a crawl space and saw deadly spiders AND snakes, I maybe would have tapped out of that one.

Roaches are icky! At some point when these tarantulas are big enough (a yr?) they will get Dubia roaches - they don’t smell, jump, fly, and are quieter than crickets and cannot climb smooth surfaces and will be kept in containers!

Yikes! Looking forward to next time we go wheeling, but no spiders for me. Troy and I keep a secure 2 block radius around the house scorpion free, F them. If I see a big spider in my house...:D

Lived in Gilbert, AZ for a winter. Stupid hot, and stupid full of nasty bugs. Went around the back yard one night with a flashlight and counted 18 black widows living in or on the cinderblock wall of the yard. Used a perimeter pesticide around all the doors, windows, vents, foundation, and eaves. Every morning whoever was up first had to get the dust pan and sweep up corpses by the front and back doors. At least 4-5 crickets, 1-2 centipedes, 1-5 spiders per day, and a scoprion or two per week.

I have a 4 leg policy with my home. If anything enters my home and has more than 4 legs it's life is forfeit.

Tarantulas (3"-4" diameter), black widows, a hundred other annoying little spider species, scorpions (frequently inside the house, falling off the ceiling...wear shoes inside!), centipedes (About 1/2" diameter, six inches long. Bad news, put you in the hospital), a few snakes...I got them all occurring naturally here. Cockroaches are pretty low on the food chain; I've seen one or two, but they don't stand a chance. I can't imagine paying money for any more of these as pets.

I think more along the lines of Permethrin when they start encroaching on MY space. I honestly don't think the pesticide kills them, it just makes them stronger.

Not actually me. I don't let them on me, and I do not have any as pets. Only ones I handle are the little jumping spiders. Ironically, they are the only ones I know of that I've ever been bitten by. Just give you a little itchy blister is all.

I did kill a nasty one in the shower before my shift today. One of the common house spiders that is built like a widow (the most icky type of all) and I rinsed it down the drain. Still get heeby jeebies thinking about it. I was nekkid and there was a spider within a foot of me. :boom:

I’ve had many tarantulas. The longest I had a particular one was about 17 years and he was a mature male when got him, a Rose Hair. I’ve had King Baboons that were flat out mean and nasty. I’ve had Goliath Bird Eaters, one that you could sit over a paper plate and none of her feet would touch the plate, she ate lizards, mice, snakes, whatever, she was wild caught and ate anything that crossed her path when hungry. I made a terrarium glass top coffee table that she inhabited. They are awesome pets.. keep their humidity higher in their cage and they will live long. They can go a very long time without food and a decent bit without water. You’ll wake up one morning and it’ll look lifeless, let it be as it is probably just ready and beginning to molt. Voila! New spider and most likely will start a new appendage if one is missing. Careful handling as the tiny hooks on their feet will hang up on your skin and if their startled will release that leg as means to escape. Enjoy, they are fascinating!

Well, I’ve been off work for a couple days, and yeah, you know I’m on duty like 24/7, trying to get to earn the use of the Tundras/TacomaWorld jet, but need to save cuz I have to buy my own aviation fuel!

Fascinating!! Thanks for the info and kind words!! You’re the second on here that has had rose hair tarantulas!
I got these girls this morning and the crickets won’t ship till Monday and was told they’ll be fine while acclimating.
But yes, looking forward to hopefully catching one or both on a molt at some point.

And while tarantulas do have venom, they won’t kill a human, but will hurt like hell from an adult spider and probably irritate quite a bit at the site.
I am not planning on personally handling either one!

We have a nice house, but I think the scorpions pre-inhabit all the houses out here before they are sealed up with windows and doors. There are also moisture vent holes in the first stone course every few feet, and I suspect the little suckers come in through those vent holes and under the weather seals on the bottoms of the doors. We just stay alert to where we step. My wife's technique is to dispatch them with blunt force, then pick them up with an old pair of pliers. Scorpions I can deal with. Centipedes are a challenge...they are harder to kill, preferably with an edged tool. :D

Yeah, even if they dry bite an adult is big enough it's not gonna feel nice. If I ever go exotic for a pet, I will likely do a snek or a Sudan Plated Lizard. I'm not afraid to handle them, so I don't risk accidently injuring them.

    “Pineapple. Pineapple!”

Uh, nope! I’d hate this. We have family with land in Idaho and Arkansas, and family in England. No matter how beautiful, I can’t imagine moving to Arkansas because of the deadly spiders and snakes. Idaho has nothing that has to hibernate in the winter because the soil gets too cold. No snakes. So, yeah, I’m thinking Idaho....

A buddy had some. They were awesome. VERY friendly. Wanted you to handle and pet them. It's the only reptile I've ever experienced that actually showed affection. Was like a little hairless dog; loved it if you scratched behind the ears.

Agree, just finished up new house and moved in last August. Not a lot, but you could find a scorpion if you wanted for sure, perfect for them. Part of living here is having a good bug guy, or wishing you did, no more scorpions for me.
