On the back of your radio, there is a hdmi port. Plug one end of the hdmi cable into that. The other end of the hdmi cable into the apple hdmi adapter.

So once I pull the HU out and plug in the HDMI cable into the back of the unit, I’ll need to find somewhere to route the other end of the HDMI cable to be able to access it?

Sorry for all the questions and I really appreciate your patience. I’ve never done audio (only mechanical) work on my own and trying to get this done right. Also want to see if this is something I can do myself without having to keep going back to the audio shop.

Is that wire in the fuse box? Does that create any other error messages on the dash? Do you have any pics?

Yes, you can do it yourself. It is very simple. I wouldn’t pay someone to do it. Once you pulled out the radio you will see the hdmi port with a bracket and screw. This bracket is what kept the hdmi cable from coming undone. Make sure to put the bracket back once you plug in your hdmi cable into the radio. See photo below.

this is my set up. The red hdmi cable is routed behind the center console. I removed the factory cigarette lighter. Added a piece of blown pvc plastic behind and cut a hole for my hdmi cable. The hdmi is then connect to apple adapter. Apple adapter is power by the lightning cable. You can see i have 2 cigarette lighter port. Im using the left one to power the apple adpater and Amazon firestick.

hope that clears thing up a little. You can route the cable however you want that would make it easily accessible to you. I can also push the hdmi cable back inside the center console when im not using to clean it up a little.

I'm a little confused by powering the apple adapter? Are you saying the phone won't charge unless plugged into usb too?

no. You just tie in with your black ground wire on the radio. Same radio harness. Or connect it to chassis ground. The radio just want to see Ground on that green wire.
Or you can also get one of this.
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/114759099125?ssspo=VKpGHvtISty&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=L2fXpNIpQmm&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

I don’t think it’s necessary to buy that. But those will also work. I have a similar one on my jvc. Works.

It’s really simple. One last thing, depending on how thick your hdmi cable ends are. You may need to shave some material off in order for the retaining bracket to sit flush. I have the slim cable and didnt have to shave anything off.

No problems with distorted sound or picture? I was reading some of the reviews and some people were reporting that their sound quality wasn't that great.

I've had this HU for nearly 2 years now and the hdmi port has never worked for me. I tried different hdmi cables and tried connecting Amazon firestick and roku. It always says no source found.

thats strange. You are certain your hdmi cable is 1080p only? Anything starting at 2k and up will not work on these radio. my firestick work great. Screen mirroring from iphone also work great.

I've used 2.1 and 2.0 hdmi cables and none of them worked. I've used cables from Amazon basics to monster cable brand.

Did you try getting a cable directly from kenwood?
I would imagine if that didnt work then you have a defective radio and it warrants manufacture attention. You paid too much for it not to work as intended. I would reach out to kenwood and possibly get warranty work done.

Yes, that’s the kenwood hdmi cable u need. That’s a 4k cable you have. It won’t work.

Those Kenwood cables are impossible to find....I just found one in Europe and am still waiting on it. My installer claims they have found a make and model that works. I just decided I'm going there for an hour with 3 cables etc and let them figure it out. I think it has to be a 1080 1.4 v cable....

yes they are hard to find right now. The cable i am using is a monoprice slim cable. Unfortunately they dont carry it anymore, or I can’t find it on their site. It’s pretty old cable from like 7-8yrs ago. Now every cable is 2k, 4k, 8k. Which cannot be use with these radio.
Best i can think of is to try every cable you could find in your spare cable box in the garage or attic. If you can find one that is before all these 2,4,8k. You would be good to go.

    here is my firestick setup.

Thanks for the info. I have a box of hdmi cables I've collected over the years. I'm sure I have an old gen hdmi cable somewhere in the box. I just need to make sure it's slim enough to fit in the socket

It’ll fit. You can shave some material off the end or sides and it’ll fit.

Ok so I believe I have everything set up correctly, based on your advice here, and I still can’t figure this out haha. Can you tell me what settings/process you go through to do the screen mirroring?

    Question:
When you start the car, will Carplay pop ip automatically on the radio?
    If Yes:
Go to radio Setting, under Device, disconnect your phone from Carplay.
    If No:
    Proceed

    How i set mine up.
Radio>>hdmi cable>>apple adapter, usb power to apple adapter also>>adapter to iphone.

Now go to radio, find the the Hdmi Source. Tap it. Your phone will now appear on the radio screen. If you get an error msg. Check your hdmi cable connection. Make sure it is secured. If that didn’t work. Your cable is NOT compatible. Try a different cable.
