General Supercharger Thread.

Morning all! For those running a long tube headers and an aftermarket AFR gauge. Where did you weld the sensor Bung? With my OE headers, I currently have it welded about 6inches below the front cat . TIA

 

As close as possible to the header collector and on the driver side.

Anywhere from 9 o'clock to 3 o'clock positions.

This is the place that had it for $2300 on sale. Currently $2650. But it's also the Sequoia fit kit. Only thing it doesn't have is a short PVC hose. This appears to be the "updated" model number. The only one I can find for the Tundra specific is slightly over $2800 and has the earlier part number attached. the "updated" part number for Tundras can't be found.

rent a 5 or 6 lb pulley puller from your local auto parts store. they're free with a deposit!

I used a harmonic balancer puller and put a ring of steel behind the pulley for it to grab onto



Also idk how you plan to reinstall the new pulley, I pulled the whole nose cone off and used a press since the bolt method that URD provided seemed janky as fuck and I thought it was gonna strip the shaft out. Good time to replace the coupler too.

 

When I did the Tacoma, I had pulled the entire supercharger off for other things. Place new pulley in toaster oven at 400 for idk, 20-30 minutes. Needs to be heated in garage close to s/c so it doesn't cool down between oven and s/c. Allows it to expand enough that it goes on A LOT easier with the URD tool

 

I often change concentric bearings on large electric motors at work which is the same concept. I use a puller similar to what snivilous used for removal, and when installing the new bearings we have a bearing cone heater. Let it sit on there until it’s 150 degrees above ambient and they slide on like butter. If you can get your hands on one of those to somehow reinstall, that would be the easiest. I’m sure they’re expensive to buy for yourself though.

 

I used to these swaps a lot on the supercharged cobras and Lightning’s. I’ll most likely use that same style puller and installed as they are press on also.

I'm sure they do great work but I just couldn't justify spending 5x more for the same job.

 

I'll be doing the install myself. Any tips and tricks from someone who installed their own?

 

Blow out / Vacuum out the area around the intake manifold before removing.
Buy a metric thread chasing kit and clean out the holes before you start installing the new stuff, mine were full of crap and the bolts wouldn't thread all the way in.

 

The bolts that hold the Magnuson down are a bitch to get a tool to. I feel like last time I pulled the blower it was less of a pain, but the first time I had to take an open end and bend it at like 60deg to fit around the bolt (nut?) and clear everything.

Also if you plan to do a pulley I would install that first. I would also swap the coupler out for one of the fancier aftermarket ones before installation, the coupler that came on mine was shot almost instantly after installing it, and pulling the nose cone with the blower installed is a bit of a bitch.

Everything else is pretty straightforward.

 

Is the Tundra Magnuson coupler the same spring loaded style they use on the Tacoma? If so ya I'll swap that out for sure.

 

I assume so? If the swapped one is the "solid" coupler then yes. All it is is a puck with 6 holes iirc. The one I pulled off I don't think had any springs though but it was awhile ago I did that.

Superchargers online sells a redesigned coupler (with round holes vs oval holes that are prone to fail). I recall it being around $150 or so.

I was laughing at a comment I saw on Reddit claiming the TTV6 was so fast, then I compared the Gen 2/2.5 specs. That is ok, truck has good enough pep IMO

 

I believe it is awful that Toyota chose not to outperform Ford....after all the blather about world class leading performance....or whatever they said.


I still hold firm to the notion they should have slapped the hybrid crap on the 5.7.

 

Ponder the hybrid 5.7...with a blower.

Give it five years or a little more. I think ICE to hybrid conversions will be fairly common.

 

It just seems like the hybrid isn’t worth it on this new truck. Essentially zero performance increase vs the non hybrid, lower towing and payload numbers due to the battery and motor weight, and only 1 MPG better. The Ford also has the ability to work like a giant generator. I’m just not sure the hybrid is worth the expense in the tundra. Seems like a flop to me.

Supercharged 5.7 reigns supreme in the tundra performance world!

 

Effortless acceleration, it behaves like a diesel more than ultimate performance truck, I think for most average driver, they "feel" the torque, I recall they had plans to make the TRD Pro more Raptor like during development but that got axed when few other projects that's related also got the boot.

Keep it in mind too that all the Wildpeak AT3 comes on the new Pro is not the same as the standard AT3W, they are Toyota specific, they are lighter and have much shorter tread depth to help with mpg rating.

There were aftermarket "hybrid" system before , one was called Vonnen http://vonnen.com/news/ , the system is do-able but it'll be a very complicated system, and probably little to no fuel savings, with minimal performance gain, a hybrid set up works best when the ICE is in atkinson cycle, the 2URFSE (LS600H) can do it, and I believe there were in fact mules running that set up but I think high costs lead them to be axed as well.

 

They ( Toyota) should have could have gone a couple different directions!!
