My main hangups with doing this are 1) the weight and 2) the requirement for different TPMS sensors. Otherwise, I really like it.

The sensors from my factory 20” Platinum wheels fit in the steelies just fine. The problem is when you go steelies to aluminum wheels because of the different sensor angle.

As far as weight goes, they’re much lighter than the Platinum wheels so I’ll take it. I mean they aren’t RWs or Methods, but it’s a good in-between.

Seriously? I thought they required the different sensors. Interesting…

Playing devil's advocate. Would it be fair to say that, as you've been mulling this over for nearly two years, you probably don't like it as much as you think you do? :monocle:

IDK. Until the recent photos, I wasn’t really sure how it’d look. Also, I think it makes the most sense to do the lift first, and I’m still saving up for that.

I think currently, the choice is between steelie spares or BDS forged TRD Pro wheels.

    NO.

He just wants to have the appropriate amount of research done on the topic before making his decision.

there are members who go years before pulling the trigger on wheels or a lift.

I researched my lift and tire size for about 8-10 months before settling on something exact.

@Ellis_McPickle is doing the completely appropriate amount of Q & A

Dobinsons twin tube coilovers and leafs. Currently getting installation quotes from shops. Looks like it’ll be about a $3,000 proposition altogether.

Solid choice. $3k isn’t a terrible price. The suspension portion of my build took me about 16 hours, so that equates to around $50 per hour at that price.

Are these spare steel wheels hub centric? Do you use different lug nuts or can you reuse the alloy-wheels ones? I have the LTD nightshade 20 in wheels.

They use different lug nuts than the alloy wheels, yes.

Do you know the part#? My research led me to this part# 90942-A1003. Not sure if that is the correct one :/

Quick question on this... what will be damaged if you have to use the spare? I don't have a separate set of nuts for the spare, so I'd have to use the same alloy nuts on the steel spare.

Seems odd / safety issue to have such a mismatch?

Dig the look of the steelies you guys are running!

Same lug nuts as alloy wheels. As Jernik pointed out, if you ever have a flat and have to mount your spare, the lug nuts used are the same. The cone in the steel wheel matches the lug nut and same as alloy wheel.

Yes, they are designed to mount on any Tundra. Early 2nd gen base models came with these style steel wheels which are also the same spec as the 5 spoke steel wheels on the later 2.5 gen.

Per Roman the Parts Guy, you need different lug nuts. Specifically, 90942A.

then the 5 spoke steel wheels OEM TPMS (40 degrees) should also fit spare steel wheels?

If I didn't have the BBS Forged TRD wheels already, I'd do this. Looks great IMO!

edit: I wonder of a TRD center cap would fit on these? That would be really cool IMO.

I’m not sure what the difference or discrepancy is on the 90942 vs 90942-A is, but according to this the A is the same lug nut as OEM and shows it working on steel or alloy. Wheel 5 in the diagram is my OEM 20” Platinum and 7 is my steel wheel.

Also common sense tells me that if the spare is designed to go on the ground using the same lug nuts, then they are good to go. Notice the lug hole in my wheels below. Same conical design as alloy wheels.

Unfortunately the only center cap that works on these is the one in the 1st post of this thread. I searched all over and tried a couple different ones I had laying around with no luck.

That's correct. Any Tundra wheel's TPMS will fit these (steel or alloy), but the steel ones will not fit the alloy due to the 40 deg angle... unless flipped around.

8” BAMuffler, TRD airflow accelerator, front window tint/windshield sun stripe, debadged tailgate 4x4 emblem, trimmed mud flaps, antenna removed stainless screw added, TRD rear sway bar, AFE high flow air filter.
Here’s my SR with the factory steel wheels. I’d like to upgrade to the 18” factory aluminum wheels eventually. I think the wheels look good since my truck is a base model and all blacked out, my only issue is they are rusting and I can’t stand that.

Do the black steelies rust easily? And when they do, what’s the trick to painting over it?

I was about to order a set of these but I wanted to see the weight difference between steel and aluminum 18's first. Same tire on both: 285/75-18 Wildpeak AT3W.

    TRD wheel- 97lbs
    Steel 18 hole- 105lbs
