Can you just do what the book says? - Or when the service engine light comes on. If your trying to be nice to your engine do what the book saysEA72E518-9FE1-4A47-806C-F9409864AF22.jpg

I hope this is not a sly reference in regards to the lack of a "tyranny" cooler......

14 day interval would be ideal when working from home. Jacuzzi.....28 days.

Been a long week. For the life of me why would the oil filter not get changed when getting the oil changed? I've never even thought about such a thing.....I'm old....

I could PM you his number and you could hear it directly from him. He designs some weird shit. My Dad who was an engineer would go round and round about things with him. It would drive my Dad nuts. He was old school and looked at things from a practical way. This guy doesn't.

Me neither. Who wouldn't change the filter at the same time is beyond me. There's a lot of dirty oil in that thing. I go as far as even suctioning out as much old oil from the oil pan as I can.

I've read some of these studies for other engines but never for a tundra. You could run a filter until the media plugs enough that the pressure drop is too high, restricting the oil system or opening a filter bypass therfore losing filtration altogether. The 10k synthetic recommended interval means Toyota thinks the filter will last that long. So if you change oil every 5k then sure, filter every other is plausible. (I have no specific engine data to support this)

But for a few $$ while you're in there... I change the filter every 5k with synthetic oil. Feels good to not leave the filter housing full of dirty oil like a transmission drain and fill, averaging your oil quality.

and......as already mentioned, an oil filter isn't something you have to save up $ for or work OT to be able to afford to buy one, like sliders? Has all reasoning gone out the window? Did I miss something? Ha!

but.....that's common sense! :thumbsup:In all fairness to the OP, he did state he is a newbie to trucks, and his friend suggested to him that changing the oil filter isn't necessary with every oil change. @Truckinewbie ....glad you posted here. This is a great Tundra forum. You should always change your oil filter when changing out your oil. I'm sure your friend is kuul but come to us for advice about what to do with your Tundra. We obviously can be a bit sarcastic at times but we mean well.

Yeah the OEM filters aren't expensive at all but they are small. I would not want gamble on a $5 filter and save a few bucks not changing it until the next oil change. It never made sense to me to not change it with every oil change.
Oil discussions are fun aren't they?

I've read an article where the owner of Levi's said to never wash them. My wife doesn't buy that. But if you do something like drip mustard on them, what's the choice?

My local dealership sells me the filters for around $5 with the drain plug washer thrown in for free. If I’m going to go through the trouble of changing the oil myself I sure as hell am going to spend another 2 minutes on the filter.

I'm down to my last Yota filter....
I don't do my own oil change anymore but I have a very good local place that does my oil changes while I watch. I get a $3 credit when I provide my own filter. Always Mobile 1 0W-20. I'm due. Just went over 5K today actually. Oil still looks good. .

I still do all my oil changes. I can get it done faster than it would take me to drive and get it done. My trash service picks up the old oil. When I get to the point I can't change the oil myself, I'll probably have to quit driving too. I also don't trust anyone else changing the oil either.
