Anyone have a thread link on discussing changing the filter with every oil change

So a friend says..."if you change the oil as often as I do around 3.5 or 4k, you can just change the filter every other time, just drain and refill...the old oil that is still in the filter at the time is not much to worry about if you use the same oil"

Manual seems to support that by saying x.x number of quarts with filter x.x number without.

Any time you change oil in anything, you change the filter, period. Why in the world would someone risk a $10,000 engine for a $10 filter?

If anything I'd change the filter and not the oil, plenty of testing showing oil can last well past 5k, but the filter isn't getting any bigger even if you extend your oil change interval. With that said I still change both at 5k

Whenever I take a shower, I always install new underwear afterwards.

So if I don't wear underwear I don't need an oil filter?

Underwear is the filter. The shower is the oil. In your case your filter is your pants (dangerous). There is always a filter in this equation and it always gets changed after a shower.

They are cheap, why wouldn't you change it if you are under there already?

Another tidbit for you- I bet you can vacuum the engine and cabin air filter rather than change them so often :boink:

I remember in auto shop years ago our teacher, Mr. Huth, said changing your oil and not the filter every time is like washing clothes with dirty water from the previous wash.

Sounds like the lazy dealership tech doing oil changes. While I agree that we probably change oil too often, I also agree with changing the filter with every oil change.

So you shower every other day, but still change under wear on a daily basis. A better scenario! Not optimal, but better.
