I remember in the UAE we had an Independence Day celebration at some palace at the beach. The pool was nice and cool. The beach sucked due to the water temp. Relaxing day and it was nice the owner did that for us.

How big is your pool? (assuming you have one) What are some typical monthly operational costs?

My house is 1500 sq ft and our electric bill runs $240 in the summer and @ $150 the rest of the year. I am usually chilly and my wife is usually on the warm side so we have a tough time finding a decent compromise. Our bedroom sticks out from the back of the house so it is usually about 20 degrees warmer than the other rooms. When that room is cool then the rest of the house is outright cold for me.

We also have a couple cats that we need to keep it reasonable for when we go away. The young cat will be OK but I feel sorry for our older cat and want to keep him comfy.

We'vehad ours for about a year now. 13,300 gallons including the hot tub.
Chemicals (chlorine pool) are about $500-750 a year. We stay on ours and test chemicals every 1-2 weeks. Once set, we've never had to shock again. 3 pumps (filter, booster for spa, and water feature) are electric. Energy bill bumped about 10-20% more. Gas bill for heater only about 5% more since we don't run it constantly. Usually only an hour or 2 when we're using it at night ;)

Pool setup and installed and done was about $80k for a free form gunnite and extra decking around it

That isn't really bad for annual upkeep.

I totally forgot you had that bad ass pool build in the home improvement thread. Sorry...I ate a big bowl of dumbass for breakfast I guess.

I must be the only one not happy with my Nest. It can't seem to learn worth a shit and keeps messing the settings up. It'll usually do the opposite of what we want. I'm replacing it with a more basic Honeywell with simple 7 day programming.

We have an ecobee that's been working great. My old house in Texas had one too, when I moved I left it there with the old roommate and she's still using it.

we're an Apple household and the ecobee has worked well with HomeKit. I can yell "Hey Siri, make it cooler in here" and it'll lower the temp appropriately.

Just saw this. We bought our new house in August, and I was glad to leave the Nest behind with our previous house. I'd had to have it replaced once and reset multiple times.

We had an old Honeywell in our current house, and I replaced it with an Ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced this last weekend. So far it's awesome. The thing I like about it the most isn't even the thermostat itself - it's the fact that a guy out there somewhere makes an app/site that you can use to seriously delve into the raw data to see how your HVAC system is working. With it (it's called beestat.io) I was/am able to determine that my current HVAC is overtaxed because

    - it's located in the attic
    - attic is not sufficiently insulated, so the HVAC system is subjected to wild temp swings between summer and winter
    - basement is not framed/insulated
