Had 2017 Tacoma TRD Off road that i had built up, Got SXS didn't like way taco towed Moved to a 2018 tundra put Kings on it never looked back don't really miss taco at all, and tundra feels like bigger taco with out rear locker.(which i do plan on adding down road) My 2017 taco was great for wheeling but as soon as you put trailer on it was not great at all and considering my tundra gets same milage. no complaints love my 5.7 Dealer tried selling me on 3rd gen tundra but i did not want to play guinea pig with new Platform twice. I went with 5.7 and no regrets.

Edit: I have a family of 5, tacoma was so small we hated going to the beach. Felt cramped and all. Tundra, NO PROBLEM!

I've currently got a '21 Taco, and the wife has a '22 4Runner, so not all that different from you and your wife with a Taco and RX350. I'm a member here to watch how the early 3rd Gen Tundras fare, because eventually I'll probably be getting into a full size (Tundra or possibly other).

The only way the taco would feasibly work for us moving forward, is if we get to where our first is sitting in forward facing car seats before our second pops. That doesn't look like it will be the case, but we're considering scraping by with just the 4Runner being able to haul all 4 of us until that does happen, because there's no way to fit a second rear facing seat in my Taco, and it's already uncomfortable for my wife with the one seat behind her (completely impossible for me to fit with a rear facing seat behind me in the Taco).

But, the writing is on the wall, that the Taco just won't work for us long term, because it's already too tight with one kid and 2 dogs, whereas the 4Runner works well. Even if both kids get to forward facing seats, that's still a limited time frame until the oldest is big enough where sitting behind me is uncomfortable. I test drove a new Tundra Crewmax and swung by home to check car seat fit, and the wife agreed that we need to start planning for an upgrade to a full size truck.

I really liked the Tundra I test drove, but honestly I'm thinking about a Sierra/Silverado 3500 as well. Our local Toyota dealer turned kind of scummy through the COVID times, and all of their Tundras are still marked up with overpriced DIOs that don't interest me. If they don't snap back to "normal" soon, then it's a relatively small price jump (like only $5k), to jump from a Tundra specced how I want it to a Sierra/Silverado 3500 specced the way I want it. The 4Runner will work for a long time for the wife, though she does really like the look of the new Sequoia, so one of those may be in her future too, for even more room as our family grows.

Agree. I just sold my 2009 Tacoma after picking up the Tundra. I almost traded the Tacoma for a 3rd gen Tacoma maybe 5 years ago but one test drive cured me of that notion. 3rd gen Tacoma powertrain, especially the transmission behavior, was just unacceptable. Not sure What Toyota was doing with that...

Yeah, I tested it for that here in MD on a local Interstate hwy. Pretty flat section, then hit a maybe a 1% grade, and that thing was downshifting and winding out. Just awful. I turned around and took it back to the dealer. BTW I grew up and went to school in FL. Go Gators. Although they have sucked lately. I bet the Tundra makes a great love bug collector!

Me. Waiting on my 23 Tundra limited 4x4. Will be trading my 20 Tacoma 4x4 TRD OR. Main reason is interior space and will tow the boat better. If I want to go off-road and play I’ll use my wife’s 20 4Runner pro. As long as I clean it when done!

@zachmx I had ( In a row ) a 2004 tacoma, 2008 tacoma, 2011 tacoma, 2014 tacoma, 2019 tacoma, 2021 tacoma and now a 2022 Tundra. I loved my tacoma's more than anything and do miss the regular parking brake, the ac vents, the real tailgate handle, no auto start/stop, the parking sensors (being able to be turned off with a push of a button and not show an icon on the dash) that they are off and no remote air dam. All that said the power the room and the bed size is awesome. I am waiting on my 23 Tundra to come in and should be here in less than 20 days. I am switching from my 2022 SR5 with convenience pkg and cloth seats (still amazes me that a 50k truck doesn't have powered seats when the 39K Tacoma does) to a 2023 SR5 TRD OR Premium WITHOUT the convenience pkg. I give up the larger fuel tank, parking sensors, the stupid remote air dam and cloth seats but gain no air dam that deploys, no front or rear sensors, smaller fuel tank, leather, heated seats, TRD push button, TRD shift knob, TRD grill, and aluminum pedals. Also gain MTS and Crawl control which I had on my 21 TRD OR Tacoma which was also a premium pkg, taking with me from my 2022 is TRD running boards, Bed cover, bed mat and the TRD exhuast. :)

My Kids ( boys 10 & 12 ) and wife love the room and also love the rear window being able to go down.

*** Also I ordered a 2023 TRD OR Tacoma in Lunar Rock as I had so much regret but when it came in and I drove it around I was amazed how much I had become used to the room and the power of the Tundra. I wanted my leather back, power seat back and no sensors or remote air dam, so found me my 23 Tundra. ***

Just be advised that SR5, even with premium features and power seats, lacks the seat and mirror memory function. If you plan to share driving with the wife at all this can be a bit of a PITA. And I also shake my head that a 55-60k truck could lack said feature.

I didn't own a Taco, but driven a few for work prior, while it is fine for two, a family of four is not.
When I first traded my manual Forester for the Tundra, my wife basically drag my ass right back into the dealership demanding to switch it to a Taco(sniff).
The only one they had was the GM's Taco that they gracefully agree to "show" and my wife like the front seat, but one stare at the back seat she slammed the door and said, never mind.

I mean, the CM is no joke on the internal space, at the beach (in Houston, TX, aka hell hole) I put up front sun visor and front row window sun blocker (from overseas) and my backside is tinted 2%, my girls can change out in the backseat without smacking each other silly.... granted, they are only 4&7 then....
I think with family (or more than one kid) you are gonna need the Tundra and in crew max configuration, for comfort, for the sake of not going insane.

Granted, it took me a while to figure out how to park the monster, so I just back-in like I always do and it is way better than trying to park front in first....

You will love your Tundra, or keep the Taco for daily/weekend pleasure driving.

Going from a 2013 Taco (double cab, long bed sport) to a Tundra.

My kids grew and the back seat didnt. Need a bit more space.

I went from a 16 Tacoma to a 22 Tundra crew cab because of kids. Do it and don’t look back!

I’m not familiar with which package comes with what features… but if you can get the front camera, that’s my favorite feature.

I've been in a similar situation OP. I had a 2016 Tacoma and sold it once my first kid was born in 2017. Wouldn't have bought the Tacoma if I knew we would be having a child, but hey, life happens and you can't always predict the future. With that said, the Tacoma was a nightmare with my kiddo. You can hardly fit a car seat in the back with any room to spare. Once we went forward facing, it was center of the rear seat or no-go. That meant I was now within kicking distance of my child.. Anyhow, we sold the Tacoma and bought an SUV. I ended up needing a truck again and that's how I ended up with the new Tundra. I've had 2 Tacomas, a 2500HD GMC and an F-350 in the past. The new tundra drives the best, by far. That isn't to say there are no complaints, because there are, but for the most part they are minor complaints. Last but not least, they both get about the same gas mileage, while the Tundra has MUCH more torque and HP on tap. I've been really impressed with the new 10 speed. It is very smooth and shifts well in any situation I've throw at it.

Thanks man, really appreciate the feedback. Looks like I'll be reluctantly handing over the Tacoma this week. And don't feel bad my nephew kicks the sh*t out of me when I pick him up from school in the Taco, been there done that.

You sound like me 2001, 2008, 2011, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2020, 2022 Tacomas, I do love this Tundra, just worried I'm gonna regret the jump but I know more space is inevitable for me here. Thank you for the input my friend. This one is a SR5 TRD OR, Premium, Advanced Tech Packaged Truck.

I don't regret going from my 2017 TRD Sport Tacoma to a 2023 Tundra, its way way better. However I guess the biggest difference is just getting used to the overall larger dimensions, the Tundra in its "shortest" configuration of CM 5.5Ft bed is still about a foot longer than my Tacoma in the longest configuration (Double Cab Long Bed). The other 2 would be some worse gas mileage, and the overall greater cost. However a lower trim tundra is still more equipped than the higher trim Tacoma's.

You are probably at the price peak for the 2022 Tacoma as well so Cashing it in now is probably maximal value.

Mine was a 2,000lb payload but it did have a tow package so maybe that’s why it was higher

Bought my 2022 Tacoma TRD OR back in November '22 after owning 2 Gen 2 Tundras. While I really enjoy driving the Tacoma and the bells & whistles, I greatly miss the space in the cab of my Crewmax. My Tacoma has right at 5k miles and I'm considering a '22 or '23 Tundra. My Gen 2 Tundras were both SR5's and had power seats yet most of the SR5 Tundras I see advertised do not have them. What Tundra Gen 3 package do I have to get to power seats?

Any improvements in the '23 Tundra over the '22 Tundra? Thanks.

You certainly can get 8-way power Softex seats in SR5 by adding Off Road or Sport Premium packages. You can also get PVM, power folding mirrors, heated steering wheel, etc. Our local dealers seem to get a bunch like that for their stock.

But for some inexplicable reason Toyota does not include the seat memory function in SR5 trim, if that is important to you. Almost a trivial thing, but caught me off guard. I am still sort of researching retrofitting that feature. It may be doable but could get $ and in any case impossible to figure out without all the schematics and parts listings. You'd need to be an engineer at Toyota to suss this out. And even then, some of them can't do that.

Make sure you get the larger fuel tank somehow. Below is how mine came with it. There might be other ways to get it but IDK.

    My SR5 has:

AO, Advanced Off Road tech package that includes BSM, parking assist, Multi terrain Monitor, Trailer backup guide with straight path assist and ** 32 gallon fuel tank**. $2740

OQ, TRD Off Road Premium package which has all the OR hardware, plus 8-way heated softex seats with lumbar support, auto dual zone climate control, and color keyed door handles. $3935

MK, PVM+BSM color keyed mirrors, $860
