Any engine damage from driving a few miles without any oil?

You might. Pump just picks up enough oil to keep it going. The OP drove 4 miles before investigating so it tells me that there was some oil getting to some parts. I watched a motor squeak itself after a tech forgot to put the oil in it. Ran for about 20 minutes. Locked solid.

Trying to find that part number on the website seems a little complicated to me, maybe because they’re from Germany, out of curiosity how much does this part cost? Did Notice a dealer from California, and I will try to call them too I guess

    Yeah this.

I have personally seen a car start and run for 20 minutes with zero oil or filter on it.

Yeah but I bet you wouldn't be too happy if I turned that car off at 19 minutes topped it off with oil and tossed you the keys. The distance has nothing to do with it that 4 miles could have taken the OP 4 minutes or 20 minutes to drive. The OP messed up by not standing there and seeing exactly how much oil went in because there is no way the dealer will say yup it was bone dry. I imagine they will say it just needed a quart to top it off, I personally do not know how low the truck has to be to not show on the dip stick. If it was truely run with no oil then there was certainly some excessive wear done at a minimum.

I second the idea of putting some miles on it and inspecting the oil and filter for any metal. Tell the dealer that's what you want to happen and be present when they do it.

Personally, I would not be too concerned about engine damage. You probably did wear a few extra miles off of the overall life of the engine, but that's just a guess. The dealer is not going to do anything for you unless there is some damage that you can prove, and not just a little extra wear. I would document everything with dates and mileage as much as possible. Call the dealer to find out how much oil the tech put in when he came out. They might tell you the truth. Then send the oil off to be evaluated on the next oil change to put your mind at ease.

IMO there is no difference between oil changes performed by a dealership vs jiffy lube , Both will hire any dumb ass kid to do the job . Just another reason to change your own oil .

That happened to a buddy of mine quite a few years back at something equivalent to JiffyLube. They came out to him, filled it up, and documented the incident at the location as well as with the corporate office and basically told him if in the future the engine failed, they would financially assist in the repair. Fast forward a couple of weeks, engine started making noises, then eventually the check engine light came on. Dealer said the engine wouldn't pressurize properly causing the light to come on. It took a while, but they paid for the repair. Documentation is key!

After the oil drain is drained, surface tension will hold a film of oil in sleeve bearings, so they will survive a little abuse, as in idling for a short period of time.

I have a friend :anonymous: who actually did this to a POS Olds 260 ci engine and it turned out all right with <5 minutes run time. That boat anchor couldn't be hurt; the technology was so dated, it still had a rope rear main seal...in halves!)

When the revs and load go up on sleeve bearings, they aren't going too last long without oil. The OP has lost some life, but he does have, and will likely need, that 100K mile warranty. The thing that would worry me is that resin coating on Toyota bearings. Toyotas aren't designed to run without oil pressure. Old-school babbit would probably handle heat better than plastic.

Man, I would have liked to have seen that 20 min lock-up, and watched all the players fall out.

I bookmarked it, I like how it's pretty much a quick disconnect fitting and has a cover. I never really like seeing the valves that look like they can be hit by something and break.

sorry OP. definitely document what happened, times, names, etc.

not everyone can change their own oil for various reasons...maybe medical, physical, etc. so we should just be mindful there. i take mine in but have an established relationship with the SA and master tech (who installed my blower 10 yrs ago). they did such clean work I made it a point then to get to know them, give great reviews and even hook them up with gift cards during the holidays. they always cut me breaks on stuff now, give me clips and bolts for free, and even wipe down my engine bay which doesn't really need it, but i can tell the MT looks after it like his own supercharged mustang. so it is possible to get great work from a stealership but imo you have to find a good team then build a relationship. they have so many customers always complaining to them even when the customer is negligent if you can stand out a little, just like any service industry, you'll prob be treated better.

but even with this, i'll pop the hood and inspect things before i drive off. we're all humans and everyone makes mistakes. i can take a little ownership by dbl checking things.

Had mine changed today at the dealer...just ran out to make sure I had oil and they didn't leave bolts out of the TRD Pro skid plate....they used the oil hatch. I could tell because it was covered in greasy finger marks. Cleaned it off and verified I had oil.

If I were the OP I would get a cylinder inspection by a local mechanic for peace of mind. If the cylinders are good then hopefully the engine is good. Cam and crankshaft could be sketchy but I would think the cylinder walls would be a good tell tale. I'd still be tempted to trade it in with the dealer and make them give you a sweet trade-in deal.

This way of thinking is what has always kept me from buying used.

It's impossible to know "everything" that happened to a car before you bought it.

Unless the previous owner has impeccable service records. My 07 did and my 14 did too. Using your logic there'd be no used market.

There' will be a used car market. Not of all off us can justify the cost of buying new vehicles. We're stuck buying used despite having impeccable records or not.

I learned this lesson with my first motorcycle. Previous owner showed me all his “service records” turns out he used the wrong parts and the engine blew.

Biggest problem is not knowing how much was put in after, that I definitelywould have watched. Most of the cars I've owned you can be 1.5 to 2 qts low and it won't register on the stick. I imagine your truck takes 6.5 to 7 qts, if you ran on 5 qts for a short leisurely drive there probably isn't much to worry about. That may have been the case if no warning lights went off, but most warning lights go off when its too late.

If they did the classic "put the plug and filter back in, lower the truck and forget the oil" move that motor won't live long. Document everything, email a statement to Toyota, and hope for the best. I don't think they'll give you anything, but if your engine fails soon they might have to.

Fortunately the extensive service records for my 07 and now 14 were all recorded on the MyToyota.com site. Most were recorded by the dealer and some by the owner I pick up where they left off. I'm OCD about that.

I get your point and I'm just like that, but look at the OP's case. His oil change will also be recorded.

What most likely won't be recorded is the possible engine damage due to the oilless short run he gave it.

The OP can self report the incident to Yota corp. He's already self reported what happened right here....on the world wide web.
