I would want to know how much oil they had to put in it. A quart or two would not be a huge concern. But if you had no oil pressure I would assume they did not put any back in it.

I would want to pull the filter in about a thousand miles and check it for metal. You could arrange to do it at the dealership with you watching. Once you pull the filter you can cut the element with a razor knife and expand it like an accordion until it is flat. Look for metal particulate on the outside of the element. That will give you a pretty good idea of what damage may have been done.

I’d just drive it for a few days and see how it goes. Your dealer told you that it was fine so just drive it and see if anything weird pops up.

I have this weird paranoia that they'll try to claim I didn't change oil often enough or something if I don't bring it to them and I ever had a warranty claim.

They have changed the oil since new every 5000 miles with synthetic. I just checked and it is full and when the guy pulled the dipstick it had zero oil showing. If there is a couple of quarts left when that happens then it will likely be fine. I am sure he put 5 quarts or so in it as he had two jugs plus one quart and put that in.

If the whirring sound you described is directly related to the lack of oil. I'm sure your not gonna get out of this one without some scratches..

This is like screwing without lube!

If you didnt have enough oil to build sufficient pressure your engine would sound like a bag of rotating hammers after 1 minute under load.

I get it, sir. No disrespect intended. May I suggest trying to find a reputable place that you trust other than the dealer.

Sure, once it's out of warranty, I'll either change it myself or go to an independent shop one of my friends takes all his Toyotas to.

Sounds like your gauge is showing accurately now. Did you notice what it showed on your way back after the oil change? 4 miles isnt too far. Be optimistic. Maybe it had enough oil and will be ok. That wasn’t far enough to even warm up the engine. You could trade it in and the next guy wouldn’t even know and might drive it another couple 100k miles with no issue. How many miles are on your truck now? Are you well under your warranty mileage?

That’s why I hate having other people do what I can do myself... my 2020 has a little over 2k on the clock, not planning on having dealer do any services...

Good idea. I’m the same way but the OP is 71 and I’m not sure I’ll have the appetite to do it myself at that age.

Happened to me with a transmission service at dealer (not Toyota). They forgot to put oil in. Dealer admitted mistake, sent email admitting mistake, then sent same tech out to house to fill with fluid. Prob drove 60 miles with low fluid. Decided to just let it go. Had emails if trans issues developed. It did helped that the service manager was sorry and acknowledged the severity of the mistake.

Not sure how much oil remains in our trucks after draining. Would also help out a lot to know how much they put in.

    Ditto this ^^^

I came to this conclusion after finding all the bolts loose on the skid plates of my wifes 4runner and my Tacoma a year or two ago. Her 4runner drain plug is also damaged from probably going in with an impact gun. The threads are damaged and it always goes out/in pretty tight.
Both vehicles were routinely maintained at the dealership for the free oil change intervals and I never laid a hand on them prior to the discovery.

Since then, I do all my own maintenance on her 4runner and my 2020 Tundra... even if its free from the dealer...

That doesnt even factor in my time.

I can spend 6 fucking hours at the dealership just to get the oil changed.

Yikes. If I didn’t have to take my skid plate off it would markedly reduce job time. As it is, I’m looking at about 1.5-2 hours to change oil, grease u joints and rotate tires.

Well reading what I’ve been reading in this thread here I think I’ll be changing my own oil, isn’t there some kind of adapter for the oil filter cartridge that you can buy to make that easier, some kind of drain plug? I have a 2020 with the 5.7 engine
Thanks in advance for any information on that

Dealer left 2 bolts off skid plate first free oil change.

My local mechanic charges $20 to $30 to change the oil, by appointment, and i supply the oil and toyota filter (purchase jugs when on sale). They give me the jug back with a few quarts left, so i know they put in the oil in and I have documented oil changes for my extended warranty.

IMHO , there is no adapter for the filter , just the https://www.motivxtools.com/product...x2341-drain-tool-bundle/?variant=895099699225 . For the oil drain plug , you can use Fumoto or Stahlbus http://www.stahlbus.com/products/en/oil-drain-valve/
Which I personally use on my Highlander , and will start using on the Tundra .

I run with a Fumoto now but that Stahlbus looks pretty damn cool and would appear to have a much smaller chance of opening up. Do you happen to know which one the 5.7 takes?

Personally, if it was mine, I would’ve purposely driven until it didn’t drive anymore and then they would’ve put a new engine in for me. For free. LOL
