Our fridge/freezer is making an irritating ticking or knocking sound. I've tried diagnosing myself and best idea I came up with is the compressor being buggered. No problems staying cool in either the fridge or the freezer.

Ticking is intermittent, usually for a few minutes at a time that stops for awhile, then starts up again.

I've narrowed it down to coming from the upper section, seemingly near the freezer cooling vent.

Here's a vid of the sound. Any ideas?

Unit is a General Electric model GTS18IBRURBB, serial # HM525917

Our’s is not that same model, but makes a similar sound sometimes. It needs to be defrosted as there is some ice build up that the fan is hitting. This might be your issue?

Negative. No ice maker on this model.

I'll look into that. There doesn't appear to be much ice build up, but there could be some hidden inside the internal workings itself I suppose.

Check for ice build up on the circulating fan in the freezer. Typically behind a panel with a few screws holding it in.

I'd defrost it before you do anything else. I've fixed some weird problems with fridges just by defrosting it. If that doesn't work it may be your evaporator fan going out.

So I pulled off the rear interior panel. Next to no ice whatsoever. The clicking continued even thought the circulation fan wasn't spinning.

I'm thinking something more internal is failing. I can't seem to remove the exterior rear panel in order to assess the internals from that side. Only the exposed bottom 12" and the upper interior rear panel as shown here are accessible. Clicking is definitely coming from the freezer portion.
