Are the motor failure issues isolated to the 2022s? I didn’t sort through all 46 (and counting) motor issues on the Gen 3s. Has Toyota made any changes now to prevent these failures?

A buddy of mine said when he got his they said they had 2 in the dealership he went to with motor failures. I may have walked out had I been told that at the time of purchase.

I am hoping to shop for a new truck soon. I typically run trucks to 200k+ with my last 2 Tacomas and buy Toyota primarily for reliability. I’m going to be in the market soon but the idea of one of these failures happening after warranty to the tune of >$20k is enough to keep me driving my Tacoma a while until I am confident it’s sorted out or I have to buy something else.

    How is Toyota addressing this?

My opinion is that it is so low a number that it statistically doesn’t mean much. Now if it happens to you? Well that would really suck. Plenty of threads to read on here regarding it. No one really knows how motors it is though.

There are no shortage of sensational things to get the populace excited; this is on par with why the evening news reports the gang shooting or gas tanker exploding, it sells ads and creates a stir.

Maybe another way of asking is whether the approximately 199,500 owners (and counting) who haven’t had an engine failure enjoy their trucks?

Thanks. I didn’t see this. Apologize for not combing through but I do now see it was all answered in the discussion.

I understand it may be statistically small. It also may not be. 46 people on a forum with how many active users that own 3rd gen’s and with how many miles? It’s enough to cause me pause and maybe not enough for others. I can accept that. I hope it’s not statistically a problem and it doesn’t happen to anyone else.

As for getting a 1st gen… they are sweet but I want low mileage. But I may get a low mileage 2021 or wait.

46 from just this forum. Of which only a small percentage own a 3rd gen. And even smaller percentage of which hit that magical 22-27k mile mark where they go kaboom

Consider a low-milage 2020/2021 for about 40k now. Invest the additional $20-30k you would spend on a 3rd gen, and you're set for ~300k miles.

I dunno about that advice. My 21 has one problem. When the sun is just right I sometimes have problems reading the buttons surrounding the infotainment screen.
