I just got my second key today. Does not come with a fob. Yeah, they literally just gave me the insert key itself

I got my second key when I got my truck; it’s the second FOB I’ve been waiting for.

Spoke to my dealer today, 2023 Tundra, when I bought it (Jan) they said second key would be mailed out April. I called today and they said letters going out but now sometime this summer. I will talk to someone else tomorrow. My question is if I lose that key how are they going to get me a replacement? Still looking but can't find any universal FOBs for this year and model. Second key only won't start the vehicle. We need more electric vehicles since they use 10 times as many semi-conductors a supply chain can't even support combustion vehicles.

You'd have to get your truck towed to a dealer and have them program a new fob. Dealers have fobs to buy, just have to wait for Toyota to "pay" for the second one. I tried getting my dealer to cut some sort of deal for a second fob, and they wouldn't. They would take the hit without any reimbursement from Toyota so there isn't much motivation on their end.

We picked up our '23 on Monday. Dealer told me that they are starting to send keys out and we should hopefully have it within a few months. Build date of the truck was 12/22 so I hoping it'll be sooner than later, however I don't know if Toyota is going by build date or sold date.

That’s odd. We just bought a 23 Odyssey and got two fobs. I wonder why Toyota doesn’t have enough fobs? My 23 Tundra didn’t even come with floor mats, just picked them up yesterday and they tried to charge us for them.

Purchase date Dec 2022, only one FOB, still not a second FOB. I called my dealer today asking about second FOB, was told to call Toyota customer care. Called them, they explained they are "hoping" to send out second FOBs "by the end of this summer"...when ever that is. I told them that summer travels with only one FOB is a risk of loosing or damaging the one FOB and being stuck. They responded saying that if that happens I should call the Toyota road side assistance number and for free they will bring me a replacement FOB (presumably program it to my truck on the spot, however that works).

But wow, "end of this summer" and if I'm stuck in the Idaho outback with a broken FOB how are they going to find me and how long will it take? I'm thinking that when I go to the outback I had better be prepared to survive a day or so in the truck if need be.

Just got my 23 limited. 1 key. Dealer could not be less helpful. Love the truck so far. Tacoma owner for last 4 trucks so this is a big change. Ps. No floor mats on a 62k build? Managed to get carpet and all weather for combined price dealer wanted for one.

    1. the key issue is toyota usa issue, not the dealers, hence no clue by the dealer.
    2. floor mats : if the truck was built w/o them not much the dealer can do about it. you can remedy it by either

    a. order 3rd party liners
    b. order oem liners thru the toyota parts dept.

otherwise its not the dealer fault if the truck was built that way. you can order any toyota model w/o any floor mats/liners, if you wanted to save money.

i would have preferred no toyota mats myself and gone husky route and saved the wasted money on my platinum since i will be ordering husky's anyway to replace the oem's since they really lack coverage.

As to the consumer to the manufacturer relationship, the dealer is all ya got. A memo or letter from either saying don't worry we will get you this would go a long way.

Same. I tried to like the 1794 mats, but its just not acceptable that the mat didn't cover the whole floor.

I signed all kinds of papers and had to remove a sticker acknowledging that I understood I was going to get 1 key and the second key would come when it was least convenient for me...

re: 1794 mats - yeah, I love those mats, but I can't have the carpet exposed to how I use the truck. Getting in/out with water/sand/dirt/mud... is not great for the carpet that's exposed by those mats. I got the huskys, all good now.

    Bought my '23 1794 on 11/25, still waiting for 2nd fob.... :(

How long did you wait? I purchased my 2023 Limited in December. Contacted the "Brand Engagement Center" in February and was told 2nd keys come in April. Now they say "late summer". What a scam.

Same here. Told me as I was leaving that it would be in April, Toyota says late Summer. Dealer has a mobile key service that was able to create a second FOB but told me that without a working FOB he couldn't make one. Not wanting to end up with a $63k driveway ornament, that would have needed a tow, I bit the bullet for just under $400. Dealer and Toyota have no intention of paying any portion.

The local dealer here in WORCESTER MASSACHUSETTS knew this before I signed. Not being given the option once they had the payment is pretty lame especially considering I've purchased 3 Tundras since 2008, one of which they drove off a lift for me and repaired which showed up on the CarFax. There's another Toyota dealer nearby but Corporate also could have insisted that their dealers be more forthcoming. They were also very understanding and completely unsympathetic when I explained that any damage to or loss of the FOB means you're paying monthly for something you can't drive. I understand the problem, it's the sketchy way they let you know that's not acceptable.

    Class action suit anyone?

    Lol

just move on, life is too short to get all worked up over a key fob

if you really need it just buy one, if you don’t then just wait .

or buy one now and sell the other one when it comes in

A $60,000+ truck should damn well include 2 key fobs.

Someone who can actually afford a $60,000+ truck should also be able to stroll their ass over to the parts counter and buy a spare key and fob for $400.

This isn’t some surprise issue, so plan accordingly.

I did just that if you read the post. Doesn't mean it doesn't suck that they, not me knew about this and didn't say anything. Also, shaming over $60k? That same ass worked for it. Don't judge.

I’m not judging you or anyone else for being in a position to buy a vehicle at “X” price. I’m glad your hard work has paid off, and I hope you enjoy your truck!

I agree it is chintzy of Toyota to ship only a single key fob. I still maintain that it is a known issue, or should be at this point, and that if it is bothersome to plan accordingly. You solved your issue at the parts counter, because you can afford to.

Eventually some day when you’re old and gray and about to trade in your Gen 3 for a Jazzy Scooter at the luxury assisted living center Toyota will finally send you your other key fob. In the meantime you will have had two of them thanks to your hard work and financial success!

In all seriousness you have two fobs now, and when Toyota sends you your second set on their books, you’ll have 3. That’s not a bad thing because as we all know Mr. Murphy LOVES to help misplace or otherwise render key fobs unusable.
