I need 10+ acres, a fence and a border of tall trees so I can't hear, see, smell or otherwise know other people exist. Lol

Our place actuallt isn't bad though, far better than any of the rentals we lived in before buying our house. Boy, do I have stories from those days..

As i get older, I am less and less inclined to socialize. We have A LOT of neighbors who have kids that go to school with our kids. We socialize when we are at school or sporting events. However I generally don't have any desire to fraternize otherwise. We have a pool and in the summer we will invite the kids over to swim, do a firepit and patio movies. Parents are welcome to come anytime. But all in all, I like my backyard oasis to myself and don't necessarily want or need any more friends. I choose to be kind and respectful most times. I work for the county school system in athletics and most parents in town know me through that - they often choose to complain about decisions made, game results, etc. I make it clear that when I am at work, I am nobody's friend and I have a job to do. When I am not at work, I don't want to talk about work or field their complaints. Usually, if people respect that I can be friendly with them. If they don't respect those boundaries, I make it known that I am in no mood for that BS.

    Lots of stuff!
I have been looking for 10 acres in Greater Vancouver! Looks like I need to win the lottery first and then I will have a minimum down payment :)

I might be able to settle into 10 acres in rural Saskatchewan next to my sister's place!

Im not a huge fan of the fake social circles at kids sports events either. All the parents who act as though they want to be friends and the generic filler talk just isn't my thing either. And I also don't understand the parents who try and hang out with our girls coaches, and athletic director. Everything seems so fake and forced. If you watch it from afar the body language tells you all you need to know.

Growing up I lived on a street with a guy like this. He would start it up and run it up and down the street all the time. It didn't bother me when I was 10 and thought that car was so cool. However, at my age now this would drive me crazy.

And now every spring I have someone who lives in the neighborhood who tunes his 2 stroke dirt bike and you can hear him braaap braaaping around getting the bike ready for summer after it sat all winter.

This is where I want to be in 12 years when our girls have flown the coupe. Where 2 neighbors are enough.

Yuuup. I live in a small unincorporated town with a bar and church. It’s kinda like living out in the country ( septic, well) but houses are super close so not really. People always do that stuff. Had neighbors kid roll a quad in our driveway few years ago after driving back and forth for two hours.

its like damn you have neighbors people, you are not quite out in the country. One neighbor worked on snowmobiles last year, only worked and drove them at night. Dear god man.

Whatever this forum told me to do
    ah yes. Neighbors.

As I got older, most folks don't impress me.

I only commiserate with a select few. Most folks are generally sloppy/shitty.

Neighbors in South Houston are suburbanites...typical "keeping up with the Joneses" mentality. most refinance their house to buy a car.
The best ones, so far, are the new Nigerians (Wife =Cancer doctor & Husband=B2B ops) , that moved in. Very polite and genuinely interested in the human condition. all the other neighbors...well, we never see. they don't bother us in the least. Truth be told, I probably bother them. doing lawn @ 7am. Working out in garage with music properly loud, etc.

neighbors at Lake Conroe. not much better. Weed smokers to the left (college educators). Weirdos to the right(couple uses their Dad's house). now, these folks have $ and are generally more civilized and calm. yes, we have hooten-nannys on the back deck/dock with the kids and such. yes, we create big ass wakes. that's my prerogative. And when folks come fish our dock, I don't cause a ruckus, I go talk to them and welcome them to fish there all the time - I feed the fish often.

now, If I have a problem with you...I will generally simply talk to you
(as others have mentioned). I won't get "authorities" involved unless the other party causes me to do so. and nobody likes a rat.

in short...I'm the neighbor you want. I take care of our shit & don't encroach on yours.

Let's face it - most folks are deep in the rat race and behave accordingly.
Social media makes REAL human interactions exponentially worse, because mush minded folks think they are SPECIAL.

    thanks for listening.

I might at times be considered the nuisance neighbor. Having a 10 meter pistol range with 50 & 100yds benches on the rifle range. Best way to be nice is to invite the neighbors (nearest is over 1/4 mile away) to use the ranges when they want and be aware of others working schedules. On neighbor that uses the shooting range as much as me works shifts. He keeps me aware of when he's on thirds so we wait until he's up to shoot.
A little courtesy goes a long way.

We keep to ourselves and don't socialize a ton but have had to do it more as our kid has linked up with more neighborhood kids. My one neighbor on the one side is the best I could ever hope for. We are late 40s, he's in his 60s. If we see eachother coming and going we have a friendly conversation and talk politics for a couple mintutes then he says "Well OK so long, good to talk."

He does not trap me for hour long conversations but he would do anything for us, we'd do anything for him. He's a private guy, never been in our house, we've never been in in his. He tells us how much he loves living next to us. If I see something knocked over on his property in a wind storm I go over and right it if I can do it on my own. When I'm pruning trees I have his OK to work on his side to get at the ones that lean our way, which benefits me and he appreciates it because it's less work for him. I snow blow his sidewalk. When we are away he keeps an eye on our place and drops off gift baskets on special occasions. I wish they could all be like him. Just right, not rude, not too overbearing. Have good interactions when we have a few minutes to spare then get on with our days.

My wife often sends me out to places like this to pick up stuff that she bought on Marketplace. I'm thinking to myself why would you want to live way out in the middle of nowhere then effectively have a dozen or so neighbours? Doesn't that defeat the point? It would be nice to have water\sewer and garbage pickup services but, other than that, it doesn't seem worth it to me. May as well live somewhere you don't have to drive 45 minutes to get groceries.

People have their quirks, and when living next door those quirks can become pretty annoying.

I'm pretty dang lucky for the most part.

We bought our house in '08 and my neighbor's wall is probably less than 20' from mine... it is very much in the city.
For being in city limits it gets pretty darn quiet after dark, except for the occasional Lifeflight helicopter going to the hospital that's a mile or so away.

Part of me would love to have a "spread" with a goat (wifey loves goats) and some ducks (I like ducks) but I don't want to maintain that much property. In San Diego, anywhere you can have that much property is WAY too far from the beach (I surf or paddleboard about 100 days/yr) and it comes with the possibility of wildfires. Not something I want to constantly worry about.

Plus my commute to work is 2 miles, the only time I have to deal with "rush hour" is when I have the day off and wanna' go surfing... it's close enough that I can come home for lunch and play with the dogs, which is a REALLY nice break in the day.

We have had some annoying dirtbag neighbors in the rentals (one next to me and one directly across the street from it) thankfully they're gone and good people are in there now.
We've had some nice neighbors with a couple of annoying or occasionally noisy habits, but nothing intolerable.
Right now we've got really cool neighbors on all sides who look out for each other, bring each other food, fruit, we trade petsitting favors with the guy across the street, I'm pretty blessed.

Neighbor next to me likes his weed, but whatever. I used to too, and when I occasionally smell it I'm not really bothered by it.

I'm sometimes the guy who plays his music loud, or runs power tools (during reasonable hours only) and we sometimes entertain and laugh too loud in my back yard, so I try to be tolerant of others who may occasionally do the same.

I've always been the same way. We should be able to resolve our problems through communication and not waste authorities time over bullshit grievances. Should being they key word here. I've also found too many snowflakes in the adulting world who aren't used to this type of discourse.

I live around a lot of low IQ people that are basically overgrown children. They love loud music 24/7 because they get bored after 5 minutes of silence, loud noises, doing drugs, blocking the streets because they can't park, pets of all kinds and not taking care of them, yelling and screaming, flashing lights and bright colors, stupid plastic toys, gas station and fast food, littering instead of using a trash can all with a giant shit eating grin on all their faces all the time. I can't wait to move out of here.

Biggest annoyance is the music. Listening to songs on repeat, listening to stupid advertisements, and the sound of the bluetooth connecting and reconnecting everytime they go inside for another beer. I dont think these people have thoughts in their heads. Without background music it must just be the sound of the wind blowing through their empty skulls. I've actually grown to hate listening to music now.

Good luck! Lol. My grandparents are sitting on 10 acres out in Chilliwack, it's worth more than I would pay for 160+ acres in here northern AB.

Sask does have reasonable land costs. My cousin is on 20 acres about an hour north of toon town. He paid under $300k if i remember right.

Bottom line, most people suck and everyone on this forum is awesome
right, I’m not that far away from anything. Under 10 minutes to a grocery store. It’s nice when it’s nice, and most of the time it’s pretty quiet and chill. 25 min to the metro. Most of my neighbors keep to themselves and have been here forever. We are the outsiders. I don’t worry about permits or any city matters what’s so ever so that’s nice too. And I can park trailers in my lawn and no one gives a shit. It’s just certain moments where people take the “ now laws countryness to far” and are just forgetting that you do in fact have neighbors and they don’t want your dog on their property or listen to you party and drive shit all day.

Really just more of people and respect thing when these things are happening often enough ya know.

Good for you helping out the older folks. Every man should have a "Gray Haired Girlfriend". I am down to two right now. Widows that live near us. Something a trivial as a small twig or piece of little can driven the elderly crazy. My father taught me that even if it wasn't your job and you can do it easily, do it.

Agreed with all of the above.

I am generally the neighbor you want; i will leave you alone, say hello when we pass, pick up leaves in your yard, snowblow your driveway and walk, mow when you're away, offer leftovers when I am grilling, etc. I try not to make too much noise before 9am on the weekends and tell my kids to keep it down when they have friends over late.

And somebody mentioned it above - I will say I don't belong to any platform of social media. I use my wife's facebook account to browse marketplace (mostly for tundra accessories). The social media society that we live in has created a culture that has removed face to face communication, relieved themselves of having any interactions beyond snapchat and instagram posts and absolved people of any accountability. I want nothing to do with any of it and live the way my grandfather taught me - face adversity, own mistakes, live and learn and treat people kindly until they give you a reason not to.

As a neighbor, just be cool. My neighbors are cool for the most part. Have one that walks her dog on my lawn, trims my entire tree without permission. Sends her dog out to back at mine any time I let mine out, etc. I'm still nice to her, because it would only bring me down to treat her poorly.

Like a few others, I'd love a lot of land, but my wife likes living in the city. My kids like more neighbors because it equals more close by friends. And I get the desire to have that too. Our compromise was buying a nice summer house on a lake in NW Montana. The population of the entire town is less than the number of houses in my neighborhood in WA.

Damn, that is one hell of a great compromise!!!! I might be nicer to my neighbors if my wife agreed to that!!!

The part I left out was she wanted to move back to NorCal, where we lived for a couple years. I showed her how the state tax savings by staying in WA (no state income tax) would be like avoiding paying a second mortgage, so we agreed to stay and get a vacation house while the kids can enjoy it. There is a lot to love about NorCal, especially the warm winters. Maybe once I retire I'll go back, or do the opposite of part-time NY/FL residents do and make sure I spend less than 6 months in CA :).

    This.

We would love to move more out in the country. But my daughter having friends around the neighborhood ( hopefully) is why our next house will probably be in a neighborhood. Thats so valuable. Our neighborhood was crazy when I was kid. There would be times 15 kids in the street playing, was a great childhood. Couple blocks from anything. 10k town.

my wife grew up way out in the country, she too had a great childhood, just different.

I used to have great neighbors Their back yard meets up with my front yard. They had a big vegetable garden and when they got too old to take care of it, they planted grass. The women would be out on her hands and knees digging up weeds in the yard. They have since passed. Now with the new neighbors, the property has turned into a sh#t hole. There is a camper, a car hauler enclosed trailer, at various times a pickup, van or SUV all for closeup viewing backed up to my front yard ( 10 feet off of the property line. I saw him measuring.) There is also a parted out Camaro that was covered but now has a shredded up cover on it. Also other piles of crap here and there. Pretty much out of their sight, but right in mine. I should put up some tall shrubs, but feel that I shouldn't have that expense because of them. Anyway we still have a great view from the back of our house. It has been all fields for the last 30 years.

Whatever this forum told me to do
as @OldGuy03 pointed out in my Racoon thread...I'll drop this over here.

Neighbors have a barking dog. like, stupid barking. At EVERYTHING!!

we are getting one of those ultrasonic dog ear blasters to train that SOB to shut up. Dog Silencer Max

anyone have experience with one of these units or with neighbors that used one against your dog?

I hear they are very effective. (pardon the pun)

I’m only 3-4miles from “town”, but it feels like 50. It’s perfect for me.
