Can anyone recommend a better front camera? I'm seeing some pretty bad reviews of blurry views of the one listed at the bottom of this thread.

Kent, that is the cam that I used. I have had no problems with it so far. One main thing to remember is that it is plastic and not to over tighten the nut, you could tighten it by hand and put a little silicone on the threads to prevent rust and to keep the nut from backing out. The other thing is that if you look in the picture the black washer has to be flipped around for mounting to the emblem. Good luck on your search.

To this day I still have the shipping protective shield on the Phoenix HU, 6 and a 10 year old boys.

I couldnt get the version of Waze that came preinstalled on the Phoenix HU to work. I had to delete it and download the new version from the google play store. Even then when I used waze on my recent 11 hour drive (each way) the entire HU would freeze up and I would have to turn off and on the truck. Became so frequent that I considered installing an inline master power switch so I could cycle the power without turning the truck off and on. It only happens with waze though. I never noticed it with any other app so far.

I’ve seen the problems with Waze mentioned multiple times. I love Waze, and would like to see this fixed before I receive my unit. However, I’m not on FB...has anyone mentioned the Waze issues on FB?

I just created a FB account last week and I can’t make heads or tails of the damned thing. I’ve looked on the Phoenix FB page and there is little to no info there. I’m pretty sure I am doing something wrong though.

Freaked me the fuck out. I gave FB a fake name but I had to use my real cell phone to get the activation text. As soon as I created the account it showed me a shitload of people I know to follow. Fuck Zuckerburg and his creepy ass stalking fucking website. I’m deleting the account.

One thing I can't find is a 12v power wire from the HU for the front cam, first gen had one. Anyone deal with this yet?

You are correct in that Waze will not multi-task with a music app. If playing music (youttube, etc), and you start Waze, it will kill the other app. However, Waze does workk just fine. Been testing it for the last several days on some road trips and actually like it very much. it is very accurate and I like the bold highlighted route for easier navigation. I'm also becoming fond of the hazard warnings such as car on shoulder, police reported ahead, accident, etc. Those have been fairly spot on.

While I"m thinking of it, I could not get the voice navigation to work with Waxe.

Yeah my best friend’s old lady works for Apple and “educated” me about all the hidden analytics FB uses and how much info they ascertain about you without you even knowing. They even deleted their accounts. For those who use FB to keep in touch with family and friends across country, more power to them. For me, keeping in touch and sharing info with my family and friends can definitely be handled right from your phone for free, and no FB eyes watching.

Interesting to hear that there’s not a lot of info on the Phoenix FB page. I heard a lot of responses on this very thread saying “the FB page is awesome and has all the answers you need.”

Everything works great, looks like they ironed out everything for the HVAC. Is everybody's 2nd gen only getting power when key is in the run position and not the ACC position?

There is an enormous amount of information on the FB page. This is where users have worked through all the necessary settings and configurations and then posted the results, pictures, etc. The problem with FB is the way the page is presented. It's not easy to find specific posts, etc.

In @dud13’s other thread, to his point, Phoenix needs to make a comprehensive manual for each model they make, detailing full wiring schematics and connections, and all of the various adjustments that can be made in the settings. These manuals should be available on their website BEFORE and AFTER purchase, and shipped with the units, so people “on the fence” about buying, or those not technically savvy, can make decisions and get these things properly running, without having to go all over God’s creation to put together bits and pieces from this site and that site. I bet dollars to donuts Phoenix would sell a LOT more units if comprehensive manuals like that existed for each unit. I waited and waited a long time to order mine, and am still happy I did, but am still a little nervous about glitches that keep popping up. I’ll just have to scour hell’s half acre to find answers here and there to deal with the issues...

    +1
I found more info on their FB page. As I suspected I was not looking at it right. Apparently in many of their posts people have made comments. Most of these are “is it available for my car” etc... but every so often you will find a nugget of wisdom. Inside those comments are other nested comments that usually have more BS responses. However, there you may find a few more nuggets. I’m finding many of these questions are asked repeatedly. Again going back to my other post with the review (paraphrasing) “if you made a freaking book or something you’d have a lot less of the same freaking questions” which goes to my other point, people would be lest hesitant to buy your radios if they felt more comfortable buying your radios. To wit: information.

As it stands now I will not get rid of my stock head unit because if this Phoenix Radio goes tits up I will be screwed for AC, heater, and other controls. I have little faith that this radio will last an extended period of time for many reasons, one of which is updates. Not just updates from Phoenix but more specifically if Google releases a new OS that does not play well with previous versions they will require developers to update their apps, now that those apps have been updated they will not work with the OS that is on my HU. Since I can’t see the underlying OS at all, I can’t update it on my own. when this does happen I may be stuck with a radio with a large screen that can’t do anything else because none of the other apps will work.

Having said that, I don’t think Phoenix will drop off the face of the earth. They have a vested interest in seeing these radios succeed otherwise their business will fail. But I can’t put the functionality of my vehicles basic controls in the hands of people that are handling a product the way they are.

I hope this makes sense, and I hope everyone understands I’m not trying to bash this company or the people there. Just my .02 cents and I’m nobody so take what I say with a grain of salt.

Look at my post where I reviewed the radio (my profile, android head unit review/install). It shows a pic of the front and side cam connection. The power and video are in that same plug.

One last thing, an install and user manual could be done that covers many types of vehicles and detail about 90% of all the settings. Each specific vehicle would only be about 10% different than others. “These are the settings for everyone, tundra owners do this, this, and this. F150 owners do this” etc....

Well I installed my gen 2 last night, the first gen was quite a bit easier to install to me (wires marked bettor). On the 2nd they do not provide a 12v power wire for the front cam like what was on the 1st gen. With that said I temporarily robbed power from the cig lighter like someone else did, getting the plug apart to solder another wire is possible, it has two lock points to the plug.
    First 20181029_184823.jpg
    Second 20181029_184712.jpg
After all that work I found this blank 12v wire not used from the HU plug.
    20181029_193514.jpg
Another thing I might want to mention is to keep the radio antenna wiires away from all the rest, on my first attempt I had all the wires bundled together and noticed reception would fade when installing the unit in the dash. After getting the rest of the wires bundled up put a small piece of foam around them to prevent wire ends from rattling on duct work.
Don't forget to recline the drivers seat (helps if you have to get under dash)and move shifter back before disconnecting battery. Without power you can pop the plastic cover off at the shifter and depress the shifter unlock also.

    20181029_043601.jpg

One other note, the first gen would power up on ACC but 2nd gen only powers up in the run position, don't forget to put a charger on when you are testing/setting up unit.

Maybe I'm being paranoid, but...has anyone tried lately going to Phoenix's website? I want to check the status of my order. I've tried to go onto the website on several devices, and it won't come up. I texted Phoenix and haven't heard back...

Also works fine for me. Although an odd time of the day maybe they were doing a system update when you tried. Btw, my order still says "unfulfilled" Gonna be a long two months.

    Changed the boot logo.

And changed the launcher, custom widgets to what I use most. Nice big digital speed readout if I’m driving alone, or my kids hijack the screen with a movie.

It’s CarWebGuru, theme is vertical MediaBox. The cool thing is, while my dash’s analog speedo is off because of my larger tires, the digital android speedo is GPS based and accurate! So I made a good choice buying that Maestro cable to tap into the strong OEM GPS antenna. Whoever said every truck has it whether we have stock GPS software or not was correct as I have SR5, nonJBL head unit, no Nav. The cable from the truck that has foam around it.
