Probably because it' rooted. Resetting it to factory settings would lose root access and break a lot of things they had to do to make it work while it is rooted. That's not good. I've been researching other units in the market and Seicane looks pretty enticing. It doesn' have the large screen like this one but it's running Android OS 7.1 Nougat. Everything runs buttery smooth and launching apps are really fast unlike this unit that takes unusually long for an app to launch even if it's already running in the background. The Seicane unit also comes with a CD/DVD player and bluetooth that can actually connect to an OBD2 BT scanner unlike Phoenix which only uses Bluetooth for music and phone calls. It can also feed video to headrest monitors from the HU. They also have RGB led backlighting for the buttons so you can control the color. I had a chat session with Phoenix Radio and they were very short and to tell you the truth, it was not very good. Aside from the larger display, it is sub par compared to the more refined, smaller units. I think we were all wowed by the large display but funtionality isn't there yet. I'm going to purchase one from Seicane and make my decision on which I will keep. These Tesla Style Android units are too new to the market so apps aren't optimised for them yet unlike the smaller ones that have been around for much longer. It needs to mature a little more. The Phoenix Radio doesn't even display any notications for text, email or from apps on the unit which should be standard.

I agree w/ everything you said, I am older person and was wowed by the tech and larger screen. I had an extended chat session with Phoenix and they were short with me as well and unable to address my issues:

    1. Backup camera only works from top-menu when I select cam, never when I engage reverse.
    2. No rear sound or sub.
    3. Can't make changes from Console - Amp.
    4. Samsung S8 will not mirror.
    5. HVAC is a mess.
    6. Radio play over other sources.
    7. Receiving a call doesn't mute music source.

They were unable to address any of the issues and asked for me to wait until Monday when the "engineer" will be available to perform a MCU reset.

I have until the 15th until my 30 days is up and I think I have had enough, great concept, poorly implemented.

    My .02

I have been following this thread and have done some other research too. For the money, this unit is worth giving a chance if you are ok with fiddling. The Seicane looks like a better developed unit without the BIG screen wow. I also like the CD/dvd disc option for a source. My third option is the Alpine X009U. Pricey, but certainly the most reliable and highest quality unit. I'm a bit of an audio guy, and the sound quality and adjustment of this unit is high.

At this point I'm going to wait to see how these Tesla units serve you brave souls, and also how they behave throughout the winter months. Wondering how the screen will react to the deep cold too. Screenshot_20171208-234034.jpg

Just thought I'd share how I changed the HU lighting issue. I decided to try paper folder for the knobs and it came out very nice and used blue electrical tape for the buttons.
    20171208_153247.jpg
20171208_162418.jpg drill a small hole and just a small dab of super glue.
20171208_163629.jpg tape for buttons, if i take the HU unit out agian i will try another layer of tape. Would like buttons to be a little darker.

I thought the knobs would be to dark but it came out great.

So far I am very pleased (was confused at times) with the unit, the last hiccup would be the HVAC issue. The screen is HUGE and It sounds 1000 times bettor than the Platinum's stock JBL system and still can't believe the sound quality from a stock set of speakers. I did get my S8 to mirror with the cord but really see no reason to. With the internet at your fingertips the options are unlimited. It does help if you have unlimited internet and tethering because G5 speed is just around corner.

I will bet anyone a beer that the 4th gen tundra will have a HU the same or larger than this one.

Does anybody know how to get to the EQ that gives more frequency controls? So far, I've only been able to get the basic EQ controls but I've seen videos with more control but it never shows how to enable more EQ controls.

Damn that is so tempting, as everyone wishes, damn shame the phoenix HU is not more polished and mature....

Just reading up, no factory rear camera, deal breaker!

It looks like it does include a connection for the factory back up cam. #2 on the diagram.

Edit: I just read the Q&A and see that question the factory back up cam. Bummer.Screenshot_20171209-082351.jpg

I sent them an email, if they confirm the factory backup camera I may take a leap of faith on this HU. Just watched the video and it is really nice.

No xm either on that one?? What is with these android radios. I think it will be tough to let this beast go with the screen I don't need much stuff on my unit and works fluid in my truck.

Agreed, I really don't need much in terms of audio, just a full range signal to my AudioControl DSP DM810 and it handles the rest to my AMPs. What I do need are the basics, rear camera on reverse, full range signal (not happening at the moment, all PnP harnesses), functional HU (ability to toggle/enable settings in "Console), and HVAC sorted. If they can get that addressed I will keep the HU. I did not make any drastic changes.

Anyone know what they mean by, MCU reset? They will have their "engineer" contact me on Monday to perform a MCU reset.

If anyone is still having a problem with the HU staying in place I found if you take the center speaker out and reach in with your hand and lift the HU main wires up over the dash frame work tubing it will keep the top plastic clips from popping out so easily.

You could also attach a piece of rubber like what is used for a sling shot from the HU to one of the many cutouts near the center speaker hole for more support.

    All,

When you select "cam" from top menu, does it default to "right" and you have to select rear for the backup camera? Be nice if you could default to rear/back and get rid of the "right"

Also, got some of issues resolved, thanks @ZPMAN. Question, at Volume 1 the HU is a little too loud, maybe I need to change the gain on my AudioControl DSP, or is there a setting I can change on the HU?

    Thanks

I have a question about the update.img install. When you do that update does it "Reset" the unit and make you set everything up as if it came from factory? Or does it just add the themes in the settings? I am just a bit gun shy adding this update.img because everything works for me except the mirror link. (Not really a big deal) I have the SR5 CM so no issues with the HVAC like other folks.

I am QUITE happy with this unit. I am also using the Car Launcher Pro as my Launcher. It looks nice and clean and allows my custom "most used apps" on the home screen. I used the version in the Dropbox download and not the Google Play version (I could not get that version to work).
