AMP research power running boards?

Can anyone show me the pins on their OBD2 plug from AMP? I believe mine is wrong. Pins don't line up with the OBD2 port. Thanks

 

I can't really get to mine easily since I have the OBD extension cable, and it is tucked up under the dash so maybe someone else here can do that. One really basic thing I thought I'd ask, and I assume you did connect the controller ground cable to a good solid ground the fender well. But this kind of crazy stuff sounds like the controller might be trying to find an alternate ground and shunting voltage to where it shouldn't be. I have seen similar with bad dashboard grounds before.

 

I have a good ground and for safe measure I relocated to another spot. Did find at 3am the one of the motors was wired backwards. Have all that fixed. Everything moves good if i bypass the controller. I believe the OBD2 connector is wrong as there are a couple of pins that plug into nothing on the OBD2 port. I feel the controller may not be getting correct signal from the OBD2 plug. Also, the plug that controls the led lights is not getting a ground from the controller so something is definitely off.

 

You might be on to something.... or the controller could be bad. IDK what the AMP OBD connector pinout looks like exactly, but I see no reason for it to engage all the pins in the truck socket. All the AMP controller really needs from there is the front door position sense. The truck OBD obviously has a lot of other stuff that the AMP steps would never remotely need. You are going to have to call AMP, of course. Good luck.

 

Not sure about power boards. Love the looks of them closed and they come down and out far enough to make them far more useable than the factory solid mount boards. Due to the long wait on some that fit, I have had a lot of time to look at and talk to other people that have them on their trucks, different brand boards and different brand trucks as well as older Toyotas. Most that have had them for 5 years or more say they don't hold up well due to folding or unfolding issues. they cost a LOT so I'm not sure I'd spend that for something I plan to drive for many years.

 

Wasn’t there someone else that had a bad OBD connector? I couldn’t find that thread or result? I think AMP was going to send another connector?

 

The parts aren't that expensive. The motors for the AMPs are ~ $60 on eBay, so even if they fail out of warranty it isn't a big deal. And many of us can't use fixed running boards. They may work for short people, but they put my butt up near the roof, way too high above the seat to be usable.

 

It was either a bad connector or a bad controller. Or maybe there was one of each? I don't remember.

 

Exactly raylo. I am 6'5 and the fixed boards were ridiculous. Have to be a contortionist to get in the truck if I used them. Hopefully I can get some answers Tomorrow.

 

Same issue with GoRhino E1 power running boards. They drop only 2 1/2" from the sill so are not significantly better than fixed boards. A few of us made the mistake of trying them and had to return them. The AMPS drop another 4 full inches lower. I wish I had known that before buying the Rhinos.

Good luck with AMP support. I only called them once long time ago and had to hold for a long time. I believe I bailed and used their call back service and that worked OK.

 

Spoke with AMP and they are sending me a new OBD2 plug. If this doesn't work they will send me a controller. Now I wait.

 

I just went digging and now recall that DynoDog had a similar issue to Bigredz350 in this other thread. AMP was sending him a new OBD plug... but he never updated the thread to say if it fixed his issue or not. I asked but never got a reply.

Thanks. That's the thread I was thinking of, but couldn't find. Hopefully Bigredz350 will get it sorted out and let us know.

This is one of the reasons I avoid aftermarket equipment that plugs into your OBD port. Over the years I've seen where they have caused damage to other modules due to poor or wrong pin connections, conflicted software, or unrecognized device. I had a fleet truck last year with a tracking/monitoring pass through OBD connector in it. When I plugged my scanner into the port, the port only had 4.3 volts. The truck wouldn't start due to a slew of communication errors. At one point I thought that there was possibly a VATS issue in the ignition switch module. I connected my OBD break out box and powered the OBD with 12 volts and all of the sudden my scanner was able to communicate with the truck. After disconnecting the GPS tracking module, I was able to clear all the communication codes and start the truck. Aside from the cost of the boards, if the AMP boards were the least expensive, I still would not have purchased them solely based on the fact that it required something to always be plugged into my OBD connector.

 

Almost sounds like the gears are slipping. But I sure like the swing lower than the Go Rhino for lower entry point! Have you called AMP?

 

Nothing slipping yet, just making noise. The steps still move smoothly. I haven't called AMP yet but will today.

 

AMP Research (Realtruck.com) now has the power steps back in stock and lists 2024 in their supported products. Ordered mine today with the help of @SantanaRealtruck !

 

So I replaced the OBD2 plug and I still have same problem. Now AMP is sending me a controller. It’s the only thing left. The customer service has been great to deal with. Just sucks to spend the money and have things not work. So hopefully soon.

 

Well I have swapped the controller and OBD2 plug. Still nothing. I am so annoyed

 

That's crazy because there is really nothing else it could be, except maybe for the wiring harness. Or somehow not getting power?? IDK.

 

I have called AMP 3 times today. I can't figure this out. I checked fuses for OBD2, DCM, doors. everything is good. He says I should get 12 volts from the white or blue wire, but I am only getting 2 volts. But that makes no sense as everything in the truck is working. Even if I supply the 12v to the blue or white wire I get nothing.

 

Could someone please tell me what voltage thy are getting from the white or blue door switch wire?

AMP says it should be 12v. I am getting 2v which make no sense. Oh and because I have re-tapped the wire so much, the wire broke off at the connector. and before that all happened all my alarms went off and I cant get them off now. I am so pissed. AMP looked at all my pics and we went over the reset procedure and nothing has changed. I have checked all fuses in the 3 fuse box locations and everything is good. SO now I have a busted truck and expensive useless steps.

 

I am not going to get into mine and mess around with those wires, but if those are the rear door trigger wires, I believe they should show +12V with the door shut (pin switch depressed). Then with the doors open (pin switch popped out) they should show ground. At least that is how negative door trigger pin switches have always worked. If you have something else there something is probably amiss, but I have no idea what it might be.

 

Update... My truck has been at the dealer for a week now. I have multiple modules throwing alarms. The wires I was tapping into have been verified that they were correct. So far a few thousand more dollars and no resolution to fixing the truck. These steps have been a damn nightmare. Amp research sent me a 3rd OBD plug but I can't verify if that was the issue because the truck is now a mess.

 

Damn. First time I have ever heard of anything like this. I hope the dealer is able to sort it out for you.

 

I am sure they will and it will be a significant cost. And still will likely not have steps working

 

Just finished installing the Power Step Extreme’s on my 2024 Limited Hybrid. Nothing special was done or needed that differed from non hybrids.

 

The limited is already wired for the plug and play option through, correct?

 

Kinda, you still have to tap into one of the wire harnesses for the rear doors.
