Am I insane for considering paying 23K for a 05 DC?

Thanks for the links. I am not at all surprised to see those prices.

    A few more examples:

(This one is local to me)
    https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/...f=atempest&utm_campaign_id=1&utm_trusted=TRUE

    https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/...f=atempest&utm_campaign_id=1&utm_trusted=TRUE

    https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2000-toyota-tundra-32/

I can certainly afford 24k for a truck, but I do prefer a good deal. It is extra tempting with the truck just a few mins away -- rare to find one in such good condition, much less right up the road....

That silver one has also been on the market.

There are also a few others too. Nobody is actually paying these prices, which is why these trucks sit so long. The sellers can likely afford for someone to pay what they want, but most won't.

Your confirmation bias is leading you to see what's inflated because they are the most common to sit on the market.

A good DC 4x4 for 17-18 will disappear in a day, and unless you are paying close attention you'll only see what doesn't sell.

The thing about many of these cars.com type dealer vehicles is that they will undoubtedly need some preventative maintenance work. No-one does a TBK just to then trade their truck in, especially a 'good one'. They could be trading it in BECAUSE it's time for a TBK. So that needs to be factored in.

    Yep.
If you look into interior dimensions a 2012 will show to have a few more inches of hip and shoulder room, but it has lot to do with door shape being changed in the area they measure, and thinner interior trim thickness, and steel, and a more square body up higher to add shoulder room rather than the gradual taper they used to have so mainly appearance instead of actual useable space.
They’re almost same exterior width so can’t really add.

Dude i didnt get but to like picture #10 and saw what looks bad
Look at the inside of the drivers door, look around the edge of the door plastic, looks like someone beat the door frame out with a hammer.
I havent even been any further, need to pull the door panel off and inspect the door, frame, and outer shell and make sure somebody didnt lather up a few gallons of bondo on the outer door skin. Dude WTF happened there....

Also thats an SR5 with cloth seats, no possible way would i ever think of paying $21,xxx for it... No way.

I am sure it explains why that one is still there. It is at a dealer in the part of town know for unscrupulous dealers.

That black 2005 SR5 double cab probably stickered at like $27,000'ish new
No way i would pay $25,xxx today for it even though they have done a great job at polishing the black up. Its clean but cloth seats dont constitute a $25,000 20 year old truck.

    $13,000 truck, all day.
Its at a body shop, looks as mint as a brand new quarter, its likely been repainted WHICH MEANS..... It probably came in banged up. I would look into the history, wrecks, auctions ect. That truck was likely bought wrecked for $5,500 and someone put about $5,000'ish in body work and paint and are looking to double their investment.

$13,000 as it sits and not a penny more unless i could figure out the history and see what its been thru.
Assuming the records check out and everything is up to snuff, MAYBE.... MAXIMUM $14,500

The seller is the original owner, he works at the local Toyota dealership, it has a clean carfax, no accidents. Truck is stored at the Toyota dealership facility, not a body shop. I will go see it today, most likely.

Regarding price: assuming the truck is in as good as the seller claims, it would sell in a second at $17-18k. West Coast is more expensive, for better or worse.

If it didn't have the accident maybe.

It's over priced as it sits

There’s a couple around that price up here. In a perfect world I’d have a minty low mileage one, but at the end of the day that truck would go to a better home than me and my angle grinder lol.

$27k in 2006 is equivalent to $44k in 2025 dollars. Still a lot for that truck and given it is in Colorado, I'd wonder about the frame.

I've owned a 2006 DC and now own a 2017 CrewMax and the 2017 is definitely roomier, but this can also be followed with the statement that both are plenty roomy for a family of 4.

For that price. Wait for a cherry one.
    Or even a newer gen.

The accident ruins the deal. Because , if, when, you decide to ever sell. People will low ball you and say it's had an accident.

Don't give that guy a pass on the accident, if you like it and want it, tell him he's got to go down in price. If they don't want to, say thank you, walk away.

There are better ones out there for you

I have no issues overpaying a little if it saves me weeks of effing about looking for something a little cheaper. You only have so many minutes left on this earth.

However, some of those prices are just a little north of sensible. Place like BAT also have a buyer fee and transportation costs on top of that. And you WILL need to drop some money on preventative maintenance unless there is a meticulous and verifiable paper trail that shows OEM parts were used and for things like TBK's, a reputable shop was used. Sorry, no offense to the home mechanic (most of us here in Gen 1 are to some extent), but I don't know you and there is no warranty. Hell, you could have got a sticker on eBay. So I would need to personally know you or need receipts from a shop to know a job had been done properly and allow that to be a factor in the price.

Like I said earlier, I would never sell my one for 20k, but I also know no-one would buy it for 20k (though I DID actually get the TBK done at Duggy's). But I did not buy it as an investment. I bought it because I needed a truck and this was the most cost effective route to get 10 years or more out of it. I paid a little more for the truck itself, but it ticked all my boxes and I did not have to waste more time looking at stuff that ended up being crap.
