Am I insane for considering paying 23K for a 05 DC?

I like the styling and simplicity. Treat them right and they usually increase in value, especially those with more rare and desirable configurations.

Hits the sweet spot on size for me too. More roomy and comfortable than a taco but nothing so large as the 2nd gen and newer trucks. If you aren't buying it to tow, it's plenty big.

For me it's also a rejection of our increasingly over engineered and throw-away culture. My house is 100 years old, my investment strategy would be applicable in the 18th century, and I still believe that men can't give birth. Since when has newer ever proven to be better?

Doesn't earn antique status here in Tennessee until 25 years.

My 2000 Tundra... year of celebration!

Don't get me wrong, keeping your own for 25 years, nothing wrong with that. Buying someone else's after 20 years of use? No thank you. For that much money($23), sorry gang, keep it.

I will do my best to keep it under 20k. Theres nothing worth buying that's cheap anymore though. Consider that the value of our currency has been debased by nearly 60% since 2006. And those are govt stats, the true number is likely closer to 100% than 60%.

That's the equivalent of $25,600 in 2025 if you believe government stats. Probably closer to $30k.

In truth in 2006 I was driving a jaguar xjs after and old woman t-boned me while running a stop sign and totaled my 2nd Avalon. The first one I totaled my damn self. Point being, Tundra wasn't on my radar back then.

Mr.B pilgrim, that 16k(25k today) was for a five year old truck that Mr.Knabores bought, not a 20 year old truck.

Anyways, i'm beating a dead 20yr old horse here. G'night gang.

Again you work from the assumption that newer is better. Assume the truck was in stasis for 20 years, is what was bought in 2006 any different than whats was purchased in 2025, aside from no longer being the newest?

In 2005 I was driving a five-year old Tundra. I had no idea it would hold up so well for all these years and near 300k miles. At 140k mikes I figured the new set of Michelins would be the last. At 210k miles I figured the new set of Michelins would be the last. And ya know what... I've purchased another set of Michelins. Who knows. Sometimes ya get lucky. Not having a truck payment for a couple decades is nice too.

I've actually never had a "car payment." At the moment I have "trailer payments" though.

No plans for the Tundra today.

At the moment, it's towing what we need to haul just fine. :)

The Tundra is newer than the Tacomas and the T100 that preceded it, and is arguably better than both in most areas. Sometimes newer is better when the design improves. Sometimes newer introduces unproven variables that turn out to not be improvements, but more like complications.

This is something I've been considering just this week. I tend to love older, more simple designs, such as the early '70's Chevy trucks, but the fact is, that Tundra is pretty sweet.

Last fall, I passed on a 1973 Ford F 350 dump truck in favor of a 1990's design (didn't buy either, none were "as advertised" and had glaring maintenance issues the seller failed to disclose in the ad). However, we decided the 1990's design is what we want and we'll continue to search for that. And I LOVED the 1973 we looked at....nearly bought it on "emotional reaction" alone but God protected us from an irrational decision. :)

I have a tip to tell if a FGT has been registered in CA its whole life based on license plate. It's not perfect, but if the license plate has this sequence, it's a good indicator.

    upload_2025-7-30_8-37-15.png

Of course trucks registered here can change their plate if they lose it or have a personalized plate then let it lapse, but a lot of FGTs here have this sequence. Mine did until I got personalized plates.

If you see an XSP or Lucchese, they did not sell them in California.

If you're looking at double cabs, they did not sell them with this style fender in California. If you see one with this style, the truck has been brought to California from elsewhere.

I don't like the look either.......those fenders are plastic at that point right? So the clip on chrome trim can't trap water that would rust out the fender edge?

The fender trim on my 2000 includes some kind of hard rubber seal.

I much prefer those fenders and wish I had them honestly. The AC guys that have those can confirm whether there's any plastic whether you take off the chrome.

I'd take off the chrome personally. If you remove the flares on the trucks with the regular flares like yours and mine, it leaves massive ugly holes.

I would not let the chrome accent stop a buy nor would it stop me from using the truck. :)

Guess it's all relative. I 'tow' a flat bottom fishing boat with my 3rd gen T4R all the time, but you wouldn't catch me using it to haul a trailer load of sod unless I had no other option.

The 1st gen Tundras are definitely capable of towing, just not so capable as the 2nd gen.

ask better questions. You need a clutch for a tremec t56 behind a ford 4.6 2v.

Honestly, if the flares didn't make my truck look like it does, I'd probably pull them off so I could ditch the wheel spacers.

Completely agree, newer can be better just isn't always. The assertion that something is necessarily less valuable only because it is older is where I took issue.

Watch out! I got a meme in response to such a reply once.

If I come across a smoking deal on a great 2nd Gen we'll consider it but for now, our 1st. Gen is "the only game in town."

My 2 axle is 2000 pounds empty and the most we would haul for the foreseeable future is a compact tractor with backhoe. That would be around maybe 3000 pounds max and I'm sure my Tundra can do a 5,000 pound tow. I plan to keep it somewhat below the "6,700 pounds" it's rated for.
