He’s a big guy so when he does get the 3rd gen he’s going to be breaking the plastic on the seat first trip.

If I recall there are now 6 million mile 2nd and 2.5 gen tundras.

    Two 4.7
    One 4.6
    Three 5.7

If you own one, you are living in the good old days.

Tim has the story on both 4.7's and one of the 5.7's.

The second 5.7 is a VA Beach company truck that was posted a couple months back. A 2019(!!!) with 900k miles. I'm going to assume truck has hit a million or will soon.

The other 5.7 and the 4.6 I also saw on this forum. Will see if I can find them.

The only replacement parts I recall among all those tundras are some starters, some alternators, and 2-3 transmissions. (besides the batteries, brakes, normal wear items).

I just saw a story on a million mile F150 with the 3.5 eco boost. It was a 2013 or so model. Crazy. Only took 3 engines….

I think it’s really cool that it these trucks can run that long. However, consider the cost to drive that many miles. I know Vic drives the truck for a living, but the fuel alone conservatively cost over $150,000.00. That that’s assuming averaging 16-17 MPG at $2.50/gal. Realistically, it’s probably significantly higher than that.

I guess my point is, in total cost of ownership, fuel represents a big chunk. On my 15-year old Saturn, the cost of ownership for 15 years and 160,000mi was over $80k… the cost of the car plus all maintenance and repairs was less than half of that. Most was fuel, insurance and taxes.

Wow. That’s more than my cost of ownership for the 20 years I’ve had my 2000 Tundra

just over $25k new, plus about $8k in maintenance+repairs (tires made up almost half that).

the rest was gas and insurance… property taxes were relatively insignicant

I noticed my brain was starting to allow me to think the ecoboost is a decent engine since it’s been around awhile. I saw some of this ford tech’s videos pop up and that quickly brought me back to reality. The crazy part is he thinks the gen 2 (I think is 2017+) is more problematic than the first generation in a lot of ways.

But new trucks are $50,000 to $70,000, not including fuel. It's always better to keep the older, reliable vehicle and run it into the ground!

There are also millions of Ecoboost trucks on the road. Ford probably sells more Ecoboost F150s in a month than Toyota sells Tundras in a year...lol.

My agency runs the 3.5 Ecoboost F150s with relatively few problems. They see WOT numerous times per shift, idle for hours, and don't care.

Also, with a few oddities, the 2.7 Ecoboost is dame near bulletproof proof. I modified and beat on mine for years and it never flinched.

Also, that tech can be pretty dramatic. He makes most of his money from social media - not twisting wrenches.

And what was the highest mileage you saw with no issues? I see them in the 300’s or so still going strong, but you don’t see the 500k+ miles ones. Most will not own a vehicle for that length of time anyway, but it is comforting knowing the UZ and UR motors can go past the million mile mark with maintenance alone.

If a million miles was the average lifespan of a Tundra engine there wouldn't be so much fanfare surrounding them...lol.

While im not trying to disparaging their reliability, the reality is only 1/2 a dozen have made it that far, out of god knows how many have been built, which makes them an outlier.

Also, there was a Hyundai that went a million miles on its orginal drivetrain...lol.

That speaks well of the Hyundai motor. Having an example go that far does mean the platform and design is capable of it. Having “half a dozen” or more do it, means it’s not unique to one case, but possible more broadly and reinforces the idea that the design and manufacture of that motor was well executed. Same for failures. One could be an outlier. 800 is an issue regardless of sample size.

    Hi Tim,
When you do your full interview/video with him, couple suggestions.

We don't just want to hear what failed and was replaced during the million miles. We want to hear what his routine was for maintenance:

    1. He already stated he gets oil changes done at dealers. Great. I'm assuming 0W-20. Can you confirm? Also, at what mileage intervals?
    2. How often did he change the spark plugs?
    3. Fresh Coolant - how often?
    4. Trans Fluid changes - how often? Done at dealer? Flushes or drain and fills?
    5. Differentials and Transfer Cases - how often were those fluids changed? (Rear Diff, Front Diff, Transfer case). What fluid?
    6. AC - Did it need a recharge?

While I agree, a quick search of Google shows about 1.25 million 1st and 2nd generation Tundras were built. 6 have made it to a million miles. Call me skeptical, but I'm not getting my hopes up thet mine will last anywhere close to that long...lol.

Considering the oldest Tundras are about 25 years old… at figure at 15k miles per year, most of those vehicles still on the road haven’t broke 500,000. There are plenty out there near that number

The conditions to push a vehicle to 1,000,000 are not commonly encountered. Tundras are not really the vehicle of choice for professional drivers… those most likely to push a vehicle to that mileage.

From what I've read Victor is constant with regular maintenance. Dude is a stud. I saw a video where he took time out of his day to help a guy walking down the interstate and got him back on the road.
