Yeah, I'd really love to see the location so I can try to get my borescope camera up there for a look.

I did the same with my leased 2021 - bought it out about 6 months before lease end. It worked out well for me. Because of the high value of the truck at the time (about $9k above new sticker price), I was able to finance the buyout as a new vehicle purchase rather than used.

But of course the state of PA tried to get me on sales tax because they valued the truck much higher than the actual purchase price. Sent in my proof of purchase price a few months ago and haven’t heard back from them.

The electronics suite and power train are certainly more complex. But fuel tank and line installation/routing is car manufacturing 101. Basic stuff. If you fail the basic stuff, what does that say about the rest? I guess we'll find out over time.

Here is a link the fuel tank assembly from Toyota parts site. There are several tubes... but which one is our problem child? Click on the schematic to get make it full size.

See 3 posts above for diagram. But not sure which tube it is. Hopefully someone will get a picture soon.

Please also try to get them to email you the pics and post them here, if possible. And if you can be there when they insert the camera it would be great if you could take a cell phone photo of that spot so those of us with our own cams can maybe take a look at our trucks ourselves.

I just crawled under mine to have a look and found what may be the location of the issue. Brake lines are run along the top of the top of the passenger side frame adjacent to the gas tank. There is a plastic tube that shares that routing about in the middle of the tank (I have the 32 gallon tank) and in one place they are clipped together. You can't see all of it because of stuff in the way but you can get your hand up there and run it along the lines. I wiggled everything and don't see how there could be significant enough movement to chafe that plastic line... at least on my truck. Nor did I feel any abrasion or roughness on the plastic line. Now, I might not be looking at the right area but it sounds like it fits the description. I was going to get my borescope up there but I am not sure it would tell me more than I could feel with my hand. Just a data point. Hopefully Paul will show us exactly where the dealer is looking tomorrow.

The other positive thing is that this is pretty far away from the muffler and exhaust pipe since that is run more towards the driver's side. I suspect if you were to get a leak here it would be very small at first and you'd smell it or see a drip before it got bad enough to reach an ignition point.

Is this recall showing up on the toyota.com/recall for everyone? My truck was built last month and it shows I currently have no recalls...

Yes, it is on Toyota recall site, NHTSA, and on our phone apps. Someone posted that June and newer builds were corrected on the assembly line. So, you probably should be good to go. But I am not sure of the provenance of that info.

I dont get it. If supposedly June and newer builds had the issue fixed then why isn't there a fix for older builds? If in fact June and newer builds are fixed then this is another WTF Toyota moment.

Exactly. Another instance where if Toyota would be just a little more forthcoming we would have a better idea of what is happening here. It could be as simple as someone on the line was installing a clip wrong... or omitting a clip... on some vehicles and they just recalled them all to look... and fix any that were messed up? Who knows? See my post above... I looked at mine and I don't see a problem... assuming I looked in the right place.

I saw the posts above about Paul (that be me) giving an update when I get to see it first hand at dealer. I am not ignoring that but have not heard back from dealer yet. I know this is longer than I or anyone want, but I do have to give them some space too. I'm silently hoping they will call (tomorrow????) and say "hey, we have a temp fix, come on in and we'll show you the problem and IF your truck needs the temp fix we can do it on the spot". Wishful thinking? yea, but I can dream can't I? I certainly won't let this drag into the weekend without at least some pressure on let's get 'er going some way or another.

The recall was just announced within the past week.

It took months for a remedy to come out for the halogen headlight recall, even though the issue was resolved during production much earlier.

I tried to look this morning but it's a really jacked up spot you can't get in there without a telescopic camera. I have a feeling they had to dissemble alot of things I tried to take a picture with my cell but because it's a dark spot the camera takes 3 seconds to take the picture and if you move it's blurry but I definitely can see the edge of what I would call a non factory clip

To help out the plastic line is loose in some places missing clips that could rub over and over with time against brake lines or body and spring a fuel leak. Clipping the line more taught against the frame or body reduces vibrational rubbing. This is what the dealer told me. While he said its temporary fix, he almost will guarantee that will be toyotas official fix. He ran into this with 2 of his different brand sleds

i currently have a cat shield installed on mine and the bolts holding it up are stripped, making it pretty difficult to remove. does anyone know if the area that needs to be worked on for this issue around the area where catshields cover the under carriage?

No issues with cat shield. This is way back just forward of the rear wheel, passenger side. Above the gas tank. Cat shield is almost in another zip code.

At this point I'd let it burn and watch my bad decision smolder away, they won't fix or find anything else I reported since the tech "couldn't reproduce" them, so I couldn't be so lucky. #newleaf

I took my boresope out today and got a photo of the offending tubal intersection. The black fuel tube crosses over the metal hard brake line... this right above where the passenger sway bar end link terminates. On mine, it seems that there is a bit of separation between the two lines but I suppose that black fuel tube could vibrate a bit underway and maybe make contact. It seems this could easily be fixed by making a clip to keep the lines separated. Or even just cover the black fuel tube with one of those split corrugated wire looms. I believe that this spot can be reached pretty easily with the right rear wheel removed so this kind of fix should be pretty painless. But if someone had one with significant wear that tube might need to be replaced, which would be a much bigger deal. I'll probably pull my wheel off one of these days and see if I can design a 3D printed clip, small side to snap onto the brake hard line and a big end for the fuel tube, to give them a firm separation.

do you have a cleaner pic?

Im going to see if I can look at mine, and see anything.

worst case, a few wraps of Tommy tape and it would keep it from wearing until the fix is out
