Bears and concealed carry are mutually exclusive missions. You will need more than one gun to cover both.

If I were camping with bears, I would want a hand cannon...44Mag revolver with a 9" barrel. For concealed carry, I would want the lightest, most compact, highest capacity 40S&W I could find.

Sounds like a lot of good info here for me to consider. Thank you.

Yeah - I guess I'd be asking for too much from one gun. The bear protection isn't as big of a thing if I'm smart with my food storage, dogs, etc... Our black bears are generally pretty tame compared to others. but good point.

    Thanks.

If you have big hands, are not recoil sensitive, and really wanna try and get a caliber that can do both look at a 10mm. Def shoot one before you buy though.

I’ve always felt that the Sig P226 and 229 felt great in my hand and have one of each, but they are heavy, S&W shields are nice , have one of those also, but me likey my Glocks! Hands down dependable & proven firearm. But take some time to handle and shoot one that suits you, YOU have to be comfortable carrying and firing the gun, because your life depends on it.

Springfield XD was my first thought too after a Sig P226, or P229, I have large hands and my XD45 fits nicely in them.
Actually, since your image link is broken - you may need to say more.
I definitely agree with a .45 when it comes to bear protection - I think a 9mm is just fine for home protection.
This was my first thought too, but these are both out of his price range.

For home protection where you need to grab something quick in the middle of the night to point and shoot, look at a shotgun. You don't need to be precise w/it like you do with a pistol or rifle. Plus the rack of a shotgun is usually enough to scare most people off. Not to mention that you don't have to really worry about the round penetrating walls and going into a neighbor's house (unless you're using slugs or something stupid like that).

For personal protection, carry what is comfortable and what you shoot well. I used to carry a Glock 17 (9mm) but it eventually got too annoying and I eventually just stopped carrying it. I now carry a Ruger LCP II and love it. I keep a .45 as my truck gun.

Good point here, though I do still prefer my handgun for home protection due to maneuverability - but if you're going to use a handgun for home protection - always fill your magazine with hollow point rounds. Don't want to penetrate walls and hit a neighbor or loved one.

Yeah, my Glock is my nightstand drawer gun (next to the shotgun lol). If I'm grabbing the Glock tho, then I have time to turn the light on, get out of bed and check out whatever it was that made the noise. +1 on the hollow point, or some other sort of energy displacement upon impact round.

Yah, for me I have my shotgun (Mossberg 500) locked in a case under my bed; but I have my XD, P226, and M4 all in a quick release magnet case. It's much faster for me to grab one of the handguns, or even my M4 than it is to grab the shotgun - and that's just for safety - and I'm not about to go clearing my house with my M4, haha. Both my XD, and P226 have underbarrel mounted LED lights - but my whole house has smart bulbs - so if I just tell my girl Alexa to turn on all of the lights - the whole house will light up.

Why does this remind me of Goldeneye for N64 so much?

Just looked at the guns from that game; apparently as a kid this is what the Goldengun looked like to me; now - not so much.

I guess it's just the bottom of the barrel kind of blending in to the white background that makes it hard to appreciate how big of a handgun that is.

I went to The Gun Range - on Orange Grove Ave. Has great reviews, guy was nice, lots of guns to rent or buy. Only issue is that they require a second person to be with me to rent and shoot since I don't currently have a gun. Some guys at work just told me that the are other ranges in the area that don't require the second person.

Honestly out of all the handguns, I've owned or carried, I carry my Ruger LCP more than any other..
It is just too easy to carry.

A quick update. I went with a friend to the range this morning and shot 5 different models - all 9mm. He had the Beretta and the Springfield, so I rented the other 3.
    Glock 17
    S&W SD9VE
    Sig 2022
    Beretta 92
    Springfield XD 9

I did not like the S&W at all. I was very inaccurate with it and the trigger pull being so heavy threw me off. I was the most accurate with the Glock, Sig, and XD. I really didn't like the feel of the glock or the sights. So, it came down to the Sig and XD9 and in the end I liked the feel of the Springfield XD9 the most and was the most accurate with it. There's a local shop that has the Springfield on sale for $400 so it seems like a winner.

Ok but bare in mind. As much as I dislike Glock, for you a glock 17 would have been what I'd suggest for you. Plenty of parts and accessories and it's tough and dependable like a Tundra. But in the end, it's what fits and shoots easy for you. Hope you scored that XD9.
