I added an H-pipe to my TRD exhaust today, and wanted to give some first impressions for anyone else considering this mod.

Thanks to Ortho281. The thread he started a while back - when he did this mod - helped with my decision. His description was spot on, and I'm very happy with the result.

The TRD was factory installed when I purchased the truck back in March of this year. It has 6K miles on it now. I really liked the moderate to WOT sound of the TRD exhaust, but couldn't stand the choppy helicopter resonance on the highway, and the general choppiness at lower speeds. It did get a little better with some miles, but never fully went away.

Start Up / Light throttle / low speeds: The exhaust note is noticeably smoother and quieter with the H-Pipe. It removes the throaty burble of the TRD exhaust (unfortunately, but was expected), and what you're left with sounds like a deeper toned version of the stock exhaust.

Highway Cruising: The helicopter resonance is completely gone. What's left is a deep hum in the 50 to 70 mph - a little more than what the stock system would have. Some may hear this as drone, but for me this is way better than that helicopter sound. Above 70 is very quiet.

WOT: Sounds really good actually. It still has some of the TRD sound, but just quieter. Almost like the sound is staying outside of the cab, and you're hearing it from the inside.

Throttle response: I actually think that off-idle, light throttle is better now (closer to stock feel instead of that mushy dual exhaust feel) and the truck does seem to hold highway speed a little better.

I attached a picture of what Ortho281 posted last year, because I did the exact same thing.

Nice. Was that a custom at a exhaust shop?

I thought about that mod for a long time. It's probably time to revisit. They say an H pipe crossover helps with low-end torque.

It's been a while since I've driven a Tundra with stock exhaust so I don't know if low end is exactly the same as stock, but the H pipe definitely feels better than the true dual setup.

    Keith.

I sent you an email yesterday about this very thing, which you did reply to. Quick question, where do they bolt to on the TRD system? Figure we'll make the information public.

    Thanks.

The go between the rear end and spare tire. They kind of cross each other.

Are they the same resonators used with your standard systems (which I've installed in the past so I'm familiar with them) - or slightly different to accommodate the dual setup.

I just bought a TRD Pro and I am definitely hearing a droning type noise from the exhaust. It is most annoying for me at around 40mph. I can still hear it highway speeds but it's not as bad.
Funny I did not notice this during my test drive.

So.....my new goal is to see how quiet I can make the TRD exhaust.

I spoke to Keith today, and ordered a pair of stainless tailpipe resonators. The driver's side will have to be "slightly modified" for the dual pipe setup.

I'll post feedback and pictures for anyone who wants to quiet an existing TRD system.

It’s all good. My apologies for being too literal.

I should have the resonators in a couple weeks or so. Keith will try to build them next week, then they have to ship to East Coast. I will do my best to get video/audio of interior/exterior sound. I don’t have the best equipment and not super tech savvy.

The resonators are not in yet, but I was able to record a few short videos on my iPad of the TRD exhaust with H pipe, but I can’t upload them here.

Any pointers on how to do this.

    Thanks all.

My wife figured out the YouTube stuff for me.

1st video is start up, rev, fast take off.
2nd video is start up, rev light take off.
3rd video is interior windows up of moderate acceleration.

I will work on interior highway between 50 and 60 mph with and without resonators.

I have the TRD dual and think it’s not that loud but, do find the choppy helicopter sound annoying at time. So interested in this mod!

    Huh.

They are public, and I can see and play them through this thread.

Anyone else try. Any thoughts why it wouldn’t work and I’ll try to fix. Technology is not my friend.
