*ACHIEVED YES!!* I am trying to get 23 mpg to no avail

How many times have you been flipped off or sworn at doing such a ridiculously low speed on the freeway, is getting pile drived by a semi even a thought to you? For the love of God, please stay out of Illinois

 

Life’s to short to worry about a few pennies. Drive it like you stole it as God intended.

 

I'm way past that age of driving fast and reckless; places can wait. Besides, a lot of people on the freeway drive a lot slower than they used to a few months ago. I get an occasional follower or two.

I'll see how well my mileage fares this time and then either hit the gym or remove some unnecessary commodities. Either way, probably good idea to refrain from posting here for me, a lot of people are getting angry.

You're receiving responses to the question you posed to a public internet forum. Some responses are more helpful/serious than others, but you don't get to decide the type of answers you receive.

I ALSO understand that I don't get to control how people drive on public roads, so by all means, continue doing you.

Sorry, sometimes my sarcasm gets taken too literally. I will say that hypermiling is a cause of accidents and road rage.

 

The Tundra is an aero brick... so reduce aero drag. Make something like this. You can't buy them AFAIK. There are probably other tweaks you can do like lowering, and add on fairings, but the cool thing about the aerocap is that it's actually a functional bed cover.



The Tundra is also heavy, and tire rolling resistance is the most important thing there. What tires are you using exactly? This is probably the most fuel efficient tire that will fit our trucks: Otherwise I think the Michelin Defender in standard load is a good bet.

I highly recommend not doing that. It does not give you enough time to avoid potholes, debris on the road or give enough time to see traffic issues up ahead. The last thing you want is the truck you’re drafting to lose a retread which can be very deadly. Also, your going to get a lot of stone chips on your paint and possibly a cracked windshield. Plus, in order to get any type of beneficial aero draft, you have to be pretty damn close to them.

 

I'll second this. As a CDL holder I can tell you we hate being tailgated and many will intentionally move over the white line to sandblast the idiots that are crawling under the trailer. Don't be one of those idiots.

This muddy mess is part of the reason I put more value in added ground clearance and chunkier, larger, more reliable tires...which have negative effects on my gas mileage, but a positive effect when it comes time to go home.

I just have a toke and a sip when I get back from making money, and this helps with the gas bill.

Ok gang. I'm starting work tomorrow about 50 miles away, most of them highway. Usually I do 70 to work and 55 back, but this time I'm planning to do 55 both ways. Here are my calculations:

Doing 70mph, I cover each mile in 0.86 min. 50 mile trip will take me appx. 43 mins.
Doing 55mph, I cover each mile in 1.09min. 50 mile trip will take me 55 mins.
Difference is 12 minutes.

50 mile trip at 20mpg will be 2.5 gallons @4.38dollars, total price for trip will be $10.95

If I manage to average 22mph going slower:
50 mile trip will be 2.27 gals @4.38dollars, total trip price will be $9.94

Do y'alls think it's worth the savings and/or the effort? Basically you lose 12 minutes to a gentle drive and get rewarded a $1.01

Not woth the savings, IMO. Way I figure it, my free time is worth my OT pay rate at an absolute minimum, because that's what my employer has to pay for my extra time. That's one fifth of an hour, so divide your OT rate by 5 and see if the math works out for you.

 

Well, it's not like that completely. I did 70 on Friday and it's been the first time in like four months I've gone that fast. It was very intense and I felt anxious going that fast. Going slower is a lot less stress and I'm like in my own little world. To me, this isn't a complete loss losing a few minutes going slower.

If driving the speed limit scares you, maybe you should take the bus.

 

Driving that slow might land you a ticket for being a hazard or for obstructing the flow of traffic. As @Cpl_Punishment said, if driving the speed limit (or at least close to it) is beyond your abilities, then it might be time to hang up the keys.

"I ain't no pixie-ass", but there are stretches of road where I drive 10mph under the speed limit... cuz bed bounce is real I hope none of yall are driven to roadrage by my actions... Mostly for your safety

 

Need some kind of auto grapple to latch onto them big rigs. They won't notice the extra drag.

 

Hope you’re staying in the right lane with the hazards on. As far as road rage goes, more people are packing than you may realize. IMO saving a few extra dollars on a tank of gas just isn’t worth it. Clip some grocery coupons to save a few bucks or join getupside. What cracks me up are people who will drive 5 to 10 miles out of their way to save a few cents a gallon, not realizing they are burning more gas than they are saving. My wife used to be one of them. Removing items like the spare tire, jack, etc are just foolish.

Also, gas usage is not factored into the speed I decide to drive. I am an individual, and have different motivations than those of the OP.

Just filled up half hour aho 25.34mpg. Working will do write up in evenin

Edit: okay, so today I was going to work and its 4.59 in my area, but when I got to work almost, it was 4.29 at Sam's club Greenville. Obviously, one might be nuts to call it a great deal, but in stark comparison to the rest of the gas stations, it wasn't half bad! Granted I only filled up 8.87gals.

I checked my mileage and did some number crunching and it showed 25.34mpg!! I was ecstatic!!! Odometer had 224.2miles and I haven't even used up half a tank yet!!

This gives me new strength and incentive to keep doing supercruise! My three last jobs were all close to the freeway and barely any lights or stop signs, so one can argue this is mostly highway mileage. But still, I haven't gotten this much miles per gallon before! To be honest though, I haven't done such drastic and ridiculous driving practices before either!

Re: road rage, not sure, I have seen people often park behind me and just follow without any issues. There is always one or two lanes everyone can pass.
Re: out of the way going; I always fill up along my drive path. Also, spare and Jack and all other essentials are still in the car, including driver.

Yeah it's only 12 minutes a day. But thats 50 hours a year.... maybe I'm biased. I spend 3+ hours a day driving to the jobsite. The faster it's over with the better lol

 

Congratulations on making your goal! I'd say call it a win and rest on your laurels, you'll still be getting crazy MPG at 22.5 with your regular habits!
