I agree, Once I get near 60k I will most likely offload mine and I'm not sure what to do. I really like my Tundra and it tows like a beast but getting another newer one doesn't seem to guarantee I wont have a cam tower issue again. When I bought my truck I told the wife at the dealer "only thing I read about these trucks is cam tower issue" "but that's just on a forum and wont happen to me, blown out of proportion." 21k miles late it happens to me, and not just seeping, dripping out the passenger side.

Its highly unfortunate that Toyota will not address this issue at the factory.

The new Ram Heavy duty just broke the 1,000 ft-lb of torque mark for a production truck...….

Of course then you have to deal with FCA problems.

I know, its not bad looking either but I have never owned or think I could own an FCA product.

    Couple things: (some previously stated)
    1. Dealership is at fault therefore corporate said FU it's your problem.
    2. Corporate will only do something if it is considered a threat of safety.
3.Refuse to accept your truck due to the fear of it blowing up because of a noise they admitted to causing and cannot fix.
4 Open case with corporate based on the truck not being safe to drive, with all details of the Dealership's written attempts and failures, so as to why you don't feel safe.
    5. Make the F@cking Dealership write you a check for your truck (-$4500) and NEVER GO BACK.

If you go with the Highlander, you will not regret it... It is a fantastic vehicle too.

That's very concerning that the dealership can't fix what they have fucked up.

Well folks, my Tundra is gone :(. The dealer made me what I considered to be very fair deal and we're now in a 2019 Limited Highlander. Hopefully I won't be gone for long, though! I'll now be selling our 2010 Mazda Cx-9 and will be looking for the right 1st gen Tundra to pop up on Craigslist. It's been a stressful couple weeks but I'm glad to be done with it. Keep an eye out on the classifieds for some 2019 Pro rims and a cement canopy!

Good to hear you could finally make a decision. You'll enjoy the Highlander, and even if you don't get any other Tundra, we would love to have you stay just for fun. I think when my Tundra gets this issue, I will be taking it to an independent shop. It will be expensive, but I have a really good shop that I take my other vehicles to, and they would have the time and care to deal with the problem properly, whereas dealers are just trying to get things done and make money.

Glad you are happy OP and wish you luck finding a good 1st gen. I had an 06 and it was a better truck than my ‘17.

That said the dealer got away with one here. Heck they made out! effed up your motor through sloppy work and somehow convinced you to buy another car from them.

Glad you finally got some resolution, good luck on the 1st gen Tundra search! In the end it was best to part ways with the truck, you wouldn't of been happy with it going forward.

Glad you had a decent outcome.....except for the part where you don't own a truck any longer.

Anyway, best of luck with the new ride!

I had an '06 as well (bought it new). I was originally planning on keeping it indefinitely (no real reason not to) but I was seduced by 381 horsepower (+ a few other things). Also, my daughter needed a pickup. Win-win.

Not what you want to here, but I feel the dealer did one on you. They knew they had dropped the ball. I'm hearing from your comments you just wanted to be down with the situation so how do you price a man's stress. As long as you're happy then you shouldn't care. Heard you got a 2010 Tundra. Hope that helps.

Yeah I get you. Honestly, though, if I could have traded my truck in for as much as I did right after the cam tower repair before I heard this noise, I would have. It made me feel really uneasy having my engine broken open with only 8,700 miles on it, and I would have always been paranoid something would happen in the future. I'm kind of glad this noise popped up right away so I could address it now rather than it happening later.

But yeah, it kind of sucks that the dealer screwed up and undoubtedly made money off the whole thing, but I never would have gotten the trade deal I did if they hadn't screwed up.

I'm really curious what exactly they did wrong. It would have been interesting to send an oil sample to Blackstone labs to see what sort of damage might have been occurring.

I'm really curious as well. I honestly don't even think they fixed it, though. It was listed for sale a couple days after I traded it in. It drove normal until you hit that RPM under load like in the video, and someone just taking it for a test drive might not even notice it. The new owner might not even notice it for a while either, so who knows?

Man just read this whole thread lol. The dealer is good for services because even an improper oil change could destroy your rig (ah-hem Jiffy Lube) so the dealer can’t run and hide from that.

A good independent shop typically couldn’t absorb that type of situation financially so it’s in their best interest to do it right and diagnose accurately.

One thing I think should be mandatory is each ASE certified mechanics should be held liable to pour work by making their license and infractions visible to the public. Also require yearly continuing education requirements.

It will deter less people from being sloppy and put more pressure on dealerships to hire and perform work properly. I would also think that it would steer people away from having someone unqualified ( The eager 20 year old with 6months experience) work on the truck with some attempt at supervision because we all know how that works.

I know this is an old thread but I just had to add to it. 2019 5.7 with 10k same noise. Dealer said they cant hear it and not to worry still have warrantee left on it. This thread scared the hell out of me! As mentioned above I researched the ACIS. I disconnected the plug and took the truck for a road test. The noise was almost completely gone. Pugged it back in and the noise was much louder. Good to go!
