I got a stethoscope and the sound seems to be coming from the engine. I could hear the tapping/clicking sound when I touch the top of the ignition coils. I'm now wondering if it's just a normal engine sound or something else. It has 170k, 2002.

Coils sit dead between the cams and valves. Possible there's an issue inside that head. Pulling the valve cover and having a look at the rotating assemblies. Having a mechanic buddy who is familiar with OHC setups is helpful. Failed hydraulic lifter?
