Hey everyone, got a question on my ‘12 Tundra with 83kish miles. Our driveway is steep and while slowly going up the driveway, making sure not to hit the camper at the top, most of the time I’m going slow and the vehicle will accelerate forward for whatever reason, when I’m not accelerating or barely stepping on the gas pedal, it does have the 5.7L Iforce V8, is this normal for the Tundras, something to do with the variable transmission? Thanks for all the info.

Would you describe the acceleration as a surge? My parents had a Ford ltd that would surge forward suddenly. It would only do it for a second or two but was unpredictable enough that no one wanted to drive it. Never did figure it out. Even the dealer was stumped. I suspect it is the relationship between intake sensors and the computer

Yes, I’d consider it a surge, only does it while very slowly driving up my driveway.

Try turning the A/C off and see if it still happens. Some cars get an idle up command when the compressor A/C engages.

let me know how the AC thing works out.
if it doesn't I'll do write up on things to do first to eliminate areas an get down to the bottom of it. Also if its constantly repeatable in that scenario , A video of both the "out side" and "gauges" would help.

I wonder if downshifting into 1 st gear going up the grade is the cause? I realize it's a pretty foreign concept for many Tundra owner's but next time, shift into 1st gear at the base of the hill. By choosing the gear yourself, the transmission won't have a chance to "change it's mind" suddenly!

My 07 TacomaV6 did this. I didn't get too worked up about it, but finally searched around and found out.

OP are you sure it isn't just changing gears? Or are you going really, really slow? Then I woukd go back to the suggestion made about the AC compressor.

I park on an inclined driveway and mine does the same thing. It’s the transmission shifting while crawling under load.

To prevent it I shift into first gear before coming up the driveway.

My wife’s highlander does the same thing, and we used to have a Lexus gs300 that did it as well. All six speed auto transmissions.

Awesome, well thank you very much, is it bad for the trans to do this repeatedly?

Automakers have had to include software in the transmissions to downshift with a brake-tap, when descending hills if the grade is steep enough. Today's drivers will do anything to avoid touching the shifter on their automatic transmissions. Toyota's Sequential or "S' Mode totally eliminates "shifting issues." Instead of needless heat building shifts with an unlocked Torque Converter, depending on speed and load, we have the option of choosing a gear that prevents it.

Hey all, just wanted to update everyone on this topic, Willard informed me I should shift the vehicle into 1st which did actually solve the issue of abruptly accelerating forward/(shifting). So thanks for all the input.

There was one specific red-light I used to sit at often. That's where I noticed the lunge. I would be creeping forward and it would suddenly push ahead a tiny bit. I didn't know what it was either, but eventually searched around online. I rarely noticed it any other time or place.
