I came across some WW2 History near and dear to my heart. My late Grandfather Lonnie D. "Hank" Thompson (Longview Texas) was a bomber pilot for the Army Air Corps (1st Lt.). He was assigned to the 460th bomber group Fighting Panthers. I knew he was a pilot, shot down over Ploesti Romania and spent almost two years as a POW. I do not know which squadron he was assigned to. The name of his plane, a B-24 Liberator was called "Rattlesnake Hank" cause when he got angry he was "as mean as a rattlesnake" My aunt gave me a website from Florida State where it paid tribute to his bomber group. It has a picture of his plane getting a swastika painted on the side for another German plane shot down. I also found a book "Target Ploesti" that one of his friends wrote and dedicated about a chapter to him.Anyways I'm super stoked about it and want to share it with everyone.

Great story! My grandpa also fought in WWII. He was also a flight instructor on the Liberator in New Guinea. I bet they crossed paths somewhere.

    Super cool!!!

My Grandfather was Infantry - a Cook and a Boxer on the Asian/Pacific effort. Pretty tough guy.

He also "re-upped" after the war to help "purge" all the Japanese soldiers who couldn't/wouldn't believe that they had surrendered. They cleansed dozens of little islands; Jap soldiers would be hiding in caves and attack or defend their positions for years after the war. My Grandfather would say they were "Stupid Crazy", thus had the be mowed down.
