My truck sits. 5 days of the week. 4600 miles since November. 2 PCS repairs. Started it tonight. Hit ac, and it sounded like a clunk or grind. Did it last week too. Temps are 100 or so and high humidity here in South Texas. AC works fine and doesn't seem to repeat the clunk grind after cycling it in and off again. Ideas??

Mine does the same after a week of sitting. My Tacoma did it also. I think the clutch gets a little hung up. Good news is they both always worked and no compressor replacements. If you wait a little bit it doesn’t seem to happen. Only right after starting.

Mine does it occasionally when it’s really hot. No way I’m going to get the dealer to replicate it so haven’t done anything about it. Kinda relieved to hear it’s semi normal.

I guess just let it run for a few minutes before hoping in to take off. Try that and report back?

Netranger6, I have the same issue, my truck sits all week and I use it on the weekend. My 2010 never had an issue but this one makes a lot of noise when I turn on the AC after sitting. Sounds even worse it the AC is on when I start it. Have you had any additional issues with your AC? Anything replaced?

Mine does this as well. Has done it since day 1. Got it brand new off the lot and it's only once every now and then and has never impacted performance. Seems to be impossible to duplicate so I never took it to the dealer. Just every now and then on really hot days on the first start and first time I turn the AC on it'll grind for a second and kick on.

My 2016 did it, and so does my 2019 I just got after it sits for a couple of days. If it works I'm not taking it to the dealer.

My 2019 does this too. Seem to happen when i let my truck sit for a couple days. I will even start the truck up and warm it up for a few minutes before turning on the AC and it will make that sound.

My new 2020 does this exact same thing when first turning on the ac even after sitting just overnight. It seems to be working fine and cooling just makes that noise only the first time to turn the ac on or if you left the ac on when you turned the truck off and restart it after sitting. Unless something breaks or quits working I’m just writing it off as another annoying noise the truck makes lol

2016 here and mine does it too. I do notice if I shut the ac off before turning my truck off and keep it off until it’s warmed up a little, it’s not as noticeable. It doesn’t bother me enough to take to the dealer. It still blows good cold air. My truck is also a weekend warrior. Roughly 5-7k/year.

My 2020 does this too. Has anyone been able to get the dealership to do anything about it?

I noticed the same thing when I tried the same thing, it’s just out of my ordinary to turn it off and back on after warm, I’m used to just leaving it on when I shut the truck off and then when I start it I hear that loud clunk noise coming from the compressor clutch and or the belt. I can immediately shut the truck off after I hear the noise and when I restart the truck it doesn’t make the noise again, only on the first start of the day...weird but I’m sure there is some sort of mechanical reason as to why it happens but it doesn’t seem to be having a negative effect on the ac system so I’m gonna just live with it. Maybe one day there would be a TSB come out about it but as of now I haven’t seen one.

I haven’t seen anybody talk about a dealership remedy, if anyone does have a dealership trip about this issue I hope they post about their experience whether good or bad

I had the same issue, took it to the dealership, they even let it sit overnight and couldn't reproduce the sound.

That’s the exact same noise mine makes. Mine consistently does it if I turn the A/C on before the engine is fully warmed up. I haven’t had a chance to take it to the dealership.

What kind of resolution are you looking for? Does your A/C work? My truck makes this noise as well, but i have never had any issue with my air not blowing cold. So like the ABS self check, i just learned to live with it.

Just wondering the fix for it mine does it too but I notice it only does it when my temp shows over 100 degrees in my truck, it’ll make that loud clunk. It does blow cold no issues with that. But yeah it’ll do it once then stops after that.

I had it yesterday where the truck was sitting in 115 weather and was in reverse when I turned the ac on, the truck almost felt like it stalled out, it robbed a ton of power to crank the ac on, so it definitely seems like an issue that only happens in after sitting in 100+ heat. The dealer sho saw the video kept my truck for the better part of a week and was unable to reproduce or spend more shop time trying to figure it out, he said it's documented now so if it grenades, then I'll be covered, even likely out of warranty for a bit.

Add my truck to the list. 2019 DC 5.7 w/5700 miles (not driving much these days due to COVID). Makes this same exact noise as AZTundra1 in the video. If I drive it everyday, it does not make that racket. Let it sit 2-3 days and it sounds like something slamming together (AC clutch?). I'm taking it to the dealer for my first oil change, etc and will have the dealer look into it. I will post up what they say. Normal? No other vehicle I have owned makes this kind of noise when the AC is engaged (Fords, Hondas, current Mazda 6).
