I'm in SoCal. We gonna ride around together, you holding the dashboard, until it happens?!

I don't understand why this is so hard for you. All types of systems fail and that's how problems are eventually identified and better systems get created. Even science works like this: best info... until there's better info. Toyota figured out their weird gas pedal stuck, can't stop, kill everyone thing... even though they never really knew what caused it... and now, allegedly, it doesn't happen anymore.

I'd like to add to all the discussion before I pulled my ABS fuses I had the truck intermittently kick on ABS without warning or prompting from road conditions. Just random ABS engagement on flat, dry pavement. I'd lose all braking power for a good second or three which is a long time when the vehicle is rollin along.
The last time this happened I was pulling up slowly to a red light at a busy intersection and almost died. Almost, and if ABS kept itself engaged for another second I'd be dead right now T-boned in an intersection because I'd have "ran" that red light. Dry pavement, sunny day, and warm weather. That was the last straw for me, and I pulled the fuses that night.
You can have all the world's foremost "car safety" experts and "safety agencies" tell me collectively that my truck is more "dangerous" now and it wouldn't mean squat compared to what I personally experienced. You could have [insert whatever government agency you inexplicably trust] show me all their studies or proof or whatever and it wouldn't change my mind.

The only decent mechanic I can find in my town later diagnosed the issue to be a bad wheel speed sensor. It had gotten dirty and gunked up apparently and was throwing bad readings. Well considering how much dirty crap is on the ground, and my wheels are on the ground, and I like being alive...you see where this is concluding.

Too many people at my work have injured themselves with 4 caster wheeled chairs and leaning back enough to fall over so a mandate went out that all chairs were to be upgraded to 5 caster wheels. No lie.

Did you replace the wheel speed sensors and put the ABS fuse back in? I'm asking because I'd be willing to throw money at a fix, but haven't found a fix because it's intermittent. Two of my 3 fails were like that, no obviously unusual roadway or driving conditions.

That government agency in fact fully acknowledges ABS kills people and they don't know why. Best theory they have is that people with ABS drive faster than people without ABS in the false belief that ABS makes you stop faster.

No, I left the ABS fuses out and the wheel speed sensor is still "bad," I'm just saving myself a few $hundo by neglecting to replace the sensor. The last portion of my comment was meant to imply I'm not going to bother with replacing it as it's just gonna get gunked up again, what with all the dirty gunk being on the ground, my wheels and sensors being right next to that, and never knowing when it'll just get gunked up again and randomly engage ABS to ultimately take my life.

My best guess is that the circumstances in which ABS would be helpful maybe occurs a lot more infrequently than the circumstances in which ABS is detrimental.

Or, the statistic is biased because more and more people are on the road in relatively more recent years, coinciding with more cars having ABS to begin with. Many drivers are dummies and will get into car accidents regardless. But with all the extra nanny shit on more modern cars people are simply less careful, while intelligence hasn't improved at all. So when the rate of accidents goes up it just so happens that more folks have ABS and then they incorrectly get correlated together, when really it's the simple fact that ABS, lane assist, radar, autonomous car braking, CVT's, etc cause already stupid people to pay even less attention than they already were and thus get into more accidents.

On that topic I rented a car last year and found out that "lane assist" should be more accurately called "technology induced crash mode" where the car literally overrides the driver and forces the vehicle within whatever it determines to be a "lane." Ridiculous.
Stuff like that stops me from wanting a 3rd gen (aside from the TTV6, no thank you).

You'll have the ABS light on and your ABS won't work. I'm not sure if it will deactivate it for all 4, or just that one wheel.

It was on like 1 would think, I had to keepmit out because tuff country had to make a spacer or it'd hit the abs ring. I have no idea if it deactivated all 4. Now I've just been trying to get rid of it with some extra time I have.
Mine just has the below 5mph activation shit, cleaned everything, checked the rears too, checked resistance compared to other front sensor, reset yaw sensor yesterday (zero point cal with paperclip ) I feel it's less sensitive after that doesn't do it in the same spots I drove every time this far but I fear that may just be iny head lol.

Is anyone running OE sized tires when the issue occurs??

Dead stock with oem 16" starfish wheels. We'll see how long that lasts. :) Topper of unknown origin.
This is an interesting thread. I drive the 1 1/2 mile ice-road below daily in the winter (I can't leave or get home w/out driving it) and often test braking along the way and I've never experienced the problems described with my Tundra's abs (I'm not saying others haven't!). I'll try extra hard this coming winter.

Doesn't the SRS system and other systems use the ABS sensor to function properly though? I don't think the ECU is using those sensors solely for braking purposes. A lot of vehicles use input from the sensors to do things like firing off your airbag, displaying proper speed, etc.

Anyway, any of you with ABS activation issues may want to see this thread: https://www.tundras.com/threads/slow-speed-abs-activation-fixed.131442/

this has been my concern with the growing dependence on sensors when lives depend on it, like the new near driverless cars.

I’m a big fan of the show air disasters. Numerous times all of the modern safety features in airplanes have backfired. Yes they save many lives but they can be problematic and more than once fatal.

Manufacturers should be required to put the smarts in the vehicles where if the system cannot validate that the sensors are working properly then that feature is disabled, and gives you a warning light

It's easy to look at the # of times the technology fails and criticize it; nobody bothers to log the number of times it succeeds and sometimes ego prevents that sentiment from getting out.

    absolutely!

The great thing about the NTSB is that they investigate and then make recommendations on how to improve it for next time.

That should also be done for automated systems for vehicles in my humble opinion. And as someone who has experienced antilock brakes failure twice, it is definitely scary but the very vast majority of the time they are wonderful

    '06 AC Limited V8/4WD
    (see signature for truck info)
Admittedly, there’s a reason I opted for a 2006. i.e. pre-hardcore-nanny-feature era. Gen1 trucks are truly in that sweet spot before all the BS like lane assist, bumper/collision sensors, auto high beams, etc.

However, I’m good with ABS. But I’ve never had it fail on me. I’ve had it in a number of cars though. If mine brakes (hurrr) I intend to fix it.
