Anytime I have had warranty work that requires a vehicle to be taken from me - I have had a replacement loaner. Every company I have ever dealt with, including Toyota, has done this. Some didn't come out and offer - but when I explained that this is my only mode of transportation - they have all given me something. Toyota did it without asking when I took mine in for the Cam Tower repair.

Took my 2018 in today for its annual service so checked five used Tundras on the lot for the leak. Only found one of the five with a leak and it was a minor seepage. It was a 2017 with 33k on the odometer.

Asked my SA if he was familiar with the problem and he said he was and they have repaired a few. I guess good new that they will not be in denial of the issue should I develop a leak, but he also said some minor seepage is normal. I don't agree with the "normal" comment so will just keep on eye on my Tundra. SA also said the techs check the trucks for the cam tower leaks every time they are in, somehow I think my inspection will be better.

Has anyone had the cam tower leak repair in the Los Angeles area? I’m in Torrance and contacted a dealer in a nearby city and they claimed they never heard of the problem. Looking for a good service department. My 2016 is leaking on passenger side. 35,000 miles

South Bay Toyota did the warranty work on mine. They had it from Tuesday til Friday morning and also gave me a free rental. No issues to report since then. Seems the work was done properly there. Lots of old timers Toyota mechanics at that location.

My 4.6 was likely leaking when I bought it a year ago with 43k miles. After reading here I checked and sure enough, one was leaking. I talked the dealer into fixing both sides after speaking with the shop foreman and the service manager. Originally they were only gonna do the one side.

I would probably find anew dealer to have my truck serviced if they told me that.

I'm willing to be a good majority of Tundra's have the leak, I feel its a design flaw. Your asking a lot of FIPG in that area to keep things sealed up. What's worse is they know the issue but yet continue to produce trucks and pass them onto the consumer without fixing it. I've heard the robot story, but if this is truly the issue why not program the thing to apply the correct amount of sealant and why does the repair call for a different type black vs factory gray.

When my truck was leaking it was pretty significant 1/2qt loss at oil change, I noticed mine rotating tires and it was also dripping on the heatshield as well.

So there is all this dripping going on but not one person has mentioned a stain in the garage or daily parking spot? No pictures of an oil puddle under the car? Sealant used in manufacturing will probably most likely be different than whats at the shop. Sometimes on purpose. Do you think that the brake pads that you get replaced at the dealership are the same as the ones used in the manufacturing process? They aren't even close.

So I'm out of the loop. What's causing this issue? If it's this common, is a recall likely?

I believe Recalls are typically "Safety" related. If vehicles were catching on fire than I could see this being an issue.

I went over to the Toyota dealer here in town yesterday to tell them about mine leaking and they said they never had herd of it??? Now that scares me of course the had no mechanics there on Saturday so I had to set up an appointment on Wednesday 12/26 the day after Christmas. I hope they let me show them what I’m talking about and the pictures that everyone has posted on here thanks to everyone on here that has brought this to everyone attention.

Correction not all recalls are safety related. But has any known mechanical problem developed from this drip? Or is it simply being implied by owners that something "might/could" happen?

It drips on the exhaust manifold and heat shield, so it bakes on there for the most part, but yes it drips on the ground eventually.
My 2016 was not driveable, lost a quart of oil between Phoenix and Denver. Dump a quart of oil on your exhaust manifolds, I consider that a problem, no?

Loosing a quart of oil in 800 miles sounds like piston blow-by not a drip. And honestly thats pretty severe blow by. My Expedition w/ 150k that does quite a bit of towing needs about 2000 miles to eat a quart. You sure you weren't running on 7 cylinders and #8 connecting rod was sticking through the side of the block. Go ahead and dump a quart of oil on your exhaust manifolds and take it for a 50 mile drive. Let me know what you see once that engine warms up.

Truck had 3k miles on it, leaked out both cam towers. Not quite sure what your point is, mine was to answer your questions.

Is there a difference between the cam tower seals leaking and the valve covers leaking or are they both the same thing?I have a little seapage on my passenger side only, on my 2014 5.7, I don’t really lose any oil. It may just be a valve cover seal issue?

Yes, they are different. Hard to tell without seeing pics because they're in the same general area.

I'd take it to another dealer then, or request that the master tech take a look at it. The service manager I worked with claimed it was super rare, but when the master tech looked at it he immediately confirmed it and said it was common on these engines. Service managers are basically salesmen, so take what they say with a grain of salt.

Seems to just be seeping along almost the entire side under the valve cover, I wiped some oil and grease off the back end on the left side with one finger, I’m sure Toyota wouldn’t fix it unless it was running out at a high rate or there was a recall?

That's the cam tower leaking in those pictures. If you are under warranty, Toyota will fix it. The valve cover is above the leak - that looks dry to me.

That looks like it's coming from the cam tower seal to me, unfortunately. You might be able to get Toyota to do a good-faith repair if you're out of warranty (this would be powertrain 5yr/60k) depending on how many miles you have, but otherwise you'd have to pay out of pocket.

So there are like 3 or 4 Cam tower leak threads. Wonder if the mods can just combine everything into one - preferably the one with the poll on it.
