Completely agree. I bought a TTV6 SR5 and drove it for a few months while I was waiting for my hybrid allocation. I have a few thousand miles on each and the hybrid is a way better experience. Instant power whenever you need it. It doesn't matter if the gas engine is taking a siesta or turbos at a full standstill, when you hit the gas the hybrid just goes! I used to put the TTV6 in sport mode most of the time, but I find I don't like sport mode when in traffic on the hybrid because the truck wants to absolutely launch when you hit the gas. It's a blast on the country roads and highways though!

I tow a 25' travel trailer up and down the west in the mountains. Camper is around 7500 lbs loaded. Without the SC, the truck could do it. With the SC, it does it much easier with a little better mpg. I have to use high test gas so that cancels out. I didnt get the SC for mpg. I got it because I wanted it. Try pulling a 7500 lb trailer up a 7% grade for 11 miles. You will appreciate having a SC if you are driving a Tundra. If you dont think the SC is that good of a thing, dont get one. Peace...

But this thread isnt about the Ecoboost is it? Im sorry you all got butt hurt so bad by a simple comment about how unfast the blown 5.7 is. Simply suggesting that these modern engines(the 3.5 EB and 3.4 iforce are extremely close) are incredible with <$1000 of tune/intercooler upgrades. I just watched a video of a 2021 F150 Lariat 3.5 EB all stock except a Livernois E30 tune and intercooler upgrade run an 11.96 at 113 mph. Is anyone running times like that in a full weight 5.7 crew cab?

How do you feel about a tuned 22 Tundra? Its not a Ford, so most of your comments dont apply. Do you think the 3.4L is weak and will blown up? And the Toyota 10 speed suck too?

Yeah but it has a 1000000" rear axle and 4.30 gears so your comment is void.

Its hard not to when its so easy to troll you guys. Worked like a charm too. Everyone all butthurt about their trucks over a simple comment and then start shitting on an engine that the thread wasnt even about.

You're 100% right. Its called pumping losses. The supercharged tundra can make enough torque to run in a higher gear at a lower engine speed towing the same load so it likely could get slightly better MPG towing.

Anyone who thought a small displacement turbo V6 was supposed to get better MPG's towing doesnt understand how a gasoline engine works. All of the technologies that have come out in the last 10-15 years on gasoline engines aim to reduce pumping losses at low load(IE, not towing). You can pick your flavor, V8 with displacement on demand, or a 4 or 6 cylinder with turbos. Both achieve the same thing, not operating with the intake manifold in vacuum, in two different ways.

Once you put the engine under high load those technologies are not a benefit anymore. Your V8 that was running on 4 cylinders needs to run on 8 with the trailer behind it. The turbo engine needs to make boost. The engine operates without manifold vacuum naturally because it needs to produce a lot of power to tow. At this point, your gas mileage is at the mercy of the energy contained in gasoline and all gasoline engines end up at the same efficiency +/-. Effectively, they are trying to get a gas engine to operate like a diesel at low load. Gasoline engines already behave like a diesel at high loads.

Whether you got a tundra with an updated 5.7L, or the 3.4L, it would have been a more complex engine than what was in the 2nd gen. Had it come with a 5.7L with DOD everyone would have pissed and moaned about that too. Everyone needs to wake up from their dream that they would have just plopped the same 5.7L in there with a 10 speed bolted to it.

Also, IDK what mpg's you get towing in the SC'd 5.7L, but I get 9.5-10 mpg towing my full width travel trailer at 70 mph with my Ecoboost on 35's. I have towed ~20000 miles with it in all sorts of conditions. I dont think there are many gasoline engines that can do much better than that and if they can its by single digit %.

Also, TFL's recent 100 mile MPG loop testing suggests that the 3.4L Tundra actually does extremely well towing and absolutely smoked a 5.7L Ram. The theory that a big V8 is always better towing isnt neccesarily true.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFLTBPuedjk&t=39s&ab_channel=TheFastLaneTruck

At the end of the day, if you still want a big archaic V8 for towing then buy an HD.

Pretty my comment was about being but hurt or speed at all, when did I once day a word about drag racing or racing for pink slips like this is fast and furious. I was talking about my dumb a** employee tuning his already stout 500lb torque eco and that is the cause of Said action

Genuine question here. Is there any concern with the extra power/torque provide by the SC having negative effects on the other components of the drivetrain? Like blowing a tranny or twisting a drive shaft?

I think I saw someone saying this could be an issue with tuning the 3rd gen TTV6

    Had a 2018 and 2019 5.7 now a 2022 3.5
3.5 averages 3mpg better same driving than the 5.7, 3.5 faster off the line pretty much instantly goes has no turbo lag, 3.5 tows great and wayyyy better mileage, 3.5 easier to change the oil 5.7 was a pain, 3.5 don’t really care for the fake engine noise, 10 speed is a big part of the equation. Several things I don’t prefer on the gen 3 truck it self engine is not one of them.

I periodically pull a 16" enclosed trailer for my cabinet business. I have owned a 5.7 for 8+yrs. When pulling with it, I like to drive 75-80mph. To maintain that speed, I felt like I was beating the truck and got single digit mpg. Trans temps in the 250's. Now with the 22 3.445 whatever they claim, it pulls great without having to feel like I'm really getting on it. Feels so much easier on the truck. I know some people don't like change, but I'm liking my new truck. At least till it breaks. LoL. As for the 2.7ecoboost, they are no joke. I drove a couple with running it hard and it pulled like crazy. I thought it was the 3.5 till I popped the hood and seen 2.7. that 400 lb.ft. of tq. way down low helps a lot.

No butthurt here. Ecoboost engines are good engines no doubt about that. The ecoboost chest thumping crowd reminds me of the Cummins crowd. Always gotta tell everyone about their motor when no one asked...

    Rci skid plate,
First time I towed my big dump trailer 10k roughly) with my 22 over the highest mountain in nj 1822 ft with no issue and feel it was less straining then in my father in laws 07 v8. Also felt more controllable in turns. Integrated brake controller is def better than aftermarket dash mounts. Two thumbs up

I have my LB 2008 5.7 V8 iF Tundra with small load camper and feels solid to drive and , boy oh boy the ride is so smooth.. but then i have this 2022 v6 Tundra.. dives nice but i just dont like too much electronics that I can not go in reverse if I have seatbelt off. still fan of 5.7 but gas mileage brings me to daily commute v6 2022

Reliability is unknown with what to expect with this engine in a 3rd gen Tundra, but from what I understand this is the same 3.4 TTV6 that Lexus has been using for years, which does have proven reliability. Am I incorrect?

I don’t think it is exactly identical, and besides, its parts are not manufactured in the same place as the ones built in Japan. For example, the turbos are made by IHI America under license by IHI Japan.

Also, the waste gate issues that have affected some of the Tundra’s 3.4s do not appear to have affected any of the LC300/LX600 3.4s.

Yes you are incorrect. It is not the same motor, shares a lot of components. But not identical, and reworked for the Tundra light duty truck configuration. Very different use case and expected duty cycles.
