I remember you saying your RW is otherwise in great condition. Decisions......98K motor not too bad, but a 50K with added expense will get you several more years of pleasure too...that's if you want to keep your RW. Fun times......
I spent too much time here up there......upload_2019-9-25_19-36-56.jpg:thumbsup:

I hate to say it but if you have the means I would get rid of that thing ASAP and take the loss whatever it is. For 7000 you could make a nice down payment on a certified pre owned tundra or the like.

Ah yes, the good old Jewel Lake Bowl. I’ve spent some time there myself lol.

The truck is in great shape otherwise, I took great care of it. Everything works perfectly fine minus the engine at the moment. I think at this point I’d opt for the cheaper motor, keep it another year or so to save up and get something else. I really could use a crew anyway.

Tundyfundy I hear your point, but I think a running truck is worth far more than one not running and I think the 6k paid to get it running would be recouped when I sell it vs selling as is now not running.

A 119K mile 5.7L isn't that bad at all and if you go that route you will still get a decent price for it when you decide to sell imho:thumbsup:

Yep, most, and I say most 5.7’s should easily last well beyond 119.

Whole truck would probably cost a small fortune to ship up here and that’s definitely a project there.

Yep, been there too haha. I work on that side of town so very familiar with it.

The 5.7 is a 400,000 plus mile engine. There have been a few people have valve spring issues but it's a very reliable engine. I wouldn't be afraid at all to put a good used engine in her and move on. It would hurt but not as bad it as dumping it as is.

The principle of it happening would be the only thing that might keep me from doing it.

You could legit forged internal LS swap it with a ProCharger for cheaper than what they quoted for another 5.7. That’s madness

I’m really curious what that engine looks like too. However with a new engine there is the core charge for the old one so I wouldn’t have it to completely break down. I can tell you the exact failure which was a valve spring for a valve in cylinder 3 causing the valve to fall into the engine.

And yeah the dealer quote was insane as I expected. Granted that’s for a new engine vs used but still absolutely ridiculous. Even the advisor I dealt with was shocked.

If you put in another used motor I don't see why you would get rid of it? It would be a great running truck again. 20 or 30K more miles on the engine than your odometer sucks on paper, but isn't really much in the life of that engine. I would ask for pictures of the lower mileage one that's still in the truck. Tell them to send you pictures of the truck so you can see how it was cared for. That usually indicates how the owner cared for the engine as well. (Minus the crash damage obviously).

Its gonna cost a few bucks to get it running again, but its gonna cost more bucks to get a new truck all together. But if you want a new/ different truck, then this sounds like a good reason to spend the money on it. Trying to put a used engine in a truck and then sell it probably raises some eyebrows with buyers. Might take longer to sell, and for less. So at that point id keep it.

$17k sounds too high even for a dealership quote. I would get another ship easy, pay the $$ for tow to the second shop of your choosing and get the truth.

I have checked eBay but again shipping costs to AK will add significantly to the price. The Cummins idea doesn’t sound bad haha. Speaking of that I was asking my service advisor at the Toyota dealer about the next gen Tundra and he told me there will be a diesel version. I don’t see why he would lie to a customer about that but we’ll see what the future holds for the next gen truck. As far as mine goes I think I’m going to go with the local engine with 98k. It’s only 10k more than my truck so not a big difference. The engine is tested prior to me purchasing it, and I’ll get a look at the truck it came from. I plan to keep the truck for awhile longer after this. Everything else worked great prior to this so yes I’ll just lose more money trading it in on something else. Should hopefully be back up and running within a week for about $6000 in all.

Sorry @Adam 86 you have to go through this. I have been there done that. Made the same decision as you and didn’t regret it. Kept the truck another 5 years before I sold it too a fiend. Trucks still runs great. You going to replace all the hoses, water pump and belts?

alpinepro4 yeah it definitely sucks when you’re in the situation as unfortunately both of us have experienced. What was the issue with your truck?

Definitely going to replace some components. Water pump for sure, I put a new belt and plugs on my truck less than 10k ago so I’ll rob those and swap some other parts out too. I’m hopeful I’ll get several more problem free years of life out of it when this is all said and done.

I was on a mountain bike trip in OR and blew the oil rings. It was due to one of the cats getting plugged up and then blew, and sucked up into the motor. Trip ended badly. Put it on a flat bed trailer the rest of the way home. That was $700 ride. Motor expense wasn’t bad it was replacing all four cat’s at a tune of $800 a piece. Total bill was just under 10K. Like you the rest of the truck was cherry and I would be hard pressed to find a truck in as good as shape for under 10K. So I sucked it up and put it on my credit card. Got some good point out of it. Promptly paid it off in a year. Unfortunately shit happens. I would rather it be my truck then my health.
Best of luck brother. It will run like a champ again.

Alpinepro4 yeah I hear ya on the health thing. Vehicle repairs quickly become a drop in the bucket when compared to health related issues. It sucks when major unexpected breakdowns occur but everything mechanical will eventually fail and shit happens. I try to keep my savings up for unexpected things like this and will just have to work as much OT as I can to recoup. Looking forward to having the truck back I much prefer it to my wife’s Camry

Agree too! I think my option up here will work fine. Should get me many more years of life out of the truck until I’m ready for an upgrade.
