Yeah my 17 seems to have the valve / tick rattle when cold and then subsides when it reaches full operating temperature. If I accelerate prior to warming up. It is a bit concerning how it sounds. However, no oil loss, plenty of power and everything appears ok under the hood. Got me.

My 15' with 175k makes the same noise in the video. I switched to 5w-30 and it didn't really change.

Pretty sure it is the timing chain/chain tensioner. It is most prevalent at idle when cold and goes away when your foot is on it or when warm. It has done it since I got it and I have put a good bit of miles on it by now. I am not going to worry about it.

    Totally normal.

I'm trying out 5w30 right now and it does seem to make the engine quieter than 0w-20...but I like the additive package in Toyota 0w-20...decisions.

10-4 I wish I could be so calm about it. And maybe its just my engine coming into its prime cause my gas mileage has gone up a bit in the last few months, but this thing gets fuggingg LOUD sometimes just like that video. Sounds like its gonna slowly rip its self apart...

How did you get your mpg up to 17.0? Just curious, since the best I see is 14.5 mixed city, with some highway. Maybe that’s my issue.

My 2021 sounded like that using 0-20. I put in Valvoline EP 5W-30 and it is much quieter. Gas mileage is not much worse. I can get 19 MPG running 55 MPH on a state highway using the 5W-30

You drive 55mph on a highway? Seems like a dangerous thing to do.:burnrubber:

An all aluminum engine, with two massive timing chains will always sound a little louder then some of the cast iron engines some might be used to IMO. Changing over to 5/30 definitely helped quiet mine down, but I wouldn't worry about it, even when running 0/20.

Geez, talk about resurrecting an old thread. Anyways, Its normal. I am on my 4th Tundra and all have sounded like this. I will say that 5w-30 will quite it down some and give you more oil pressure.

May be to early to tell, but the ATS 505CRO followed up with the HPL 30w cleaner seemed to work

Since this thread has been resurrected I will follow up on my earlier comment. There is a normal Toyota valvetrain noise and the noise in the first video of this thread is that normal noise plus the extra noise of other components from being an aluminum block, like many others have said. It is just very hard to get used to.

In my case, due to leaking cam risers I tore mine open. I ended up replacing the tensioners, drivers side main was stuck bad. That didn’t change the sound of my engine. Mine did have a diesely noise which was definitely from the secondary air injection connection port on the drivers side manifold. If you hear additional noise from what is in the video I highly recommend checking the manifold prior to blaming tensioners. There are also an inspection ports for the main tensioners on the timing cover but still require removal of other items to access.

Maybe it's been covered and I missed it but how many miles are some of these "knockers" going between oil changes?

My 21 is as quiet as can be. With the exception of start up when it sounds like a huge turbofan jet engine. Throw in the smell of half burnt kerosene and I'd swear I was as the airport

I suspected some of the noise was the secondary air injection. Since using ATS and HPL 30w cleaner oil on Friday I have no more timing chain slap. there is still a really loud noise in the first 1-3 seconds at cold start that sounds like its coming from the manifold

I used to get 17 in mine when I was doing mostly highway cruising at 70 delivering stuff far away. Now I do more city driving and its 14.5. I also put a heavy front bumper and bigger tires. It makes a big difference.

My 2021 5.7L crew max with 20k miles has a cold start nock that sounds just like this but louder. I think the clatter ticking / diesel sound is normal. But I took it to the dealer for the cold start nock that's more audible on the passenger side. They agreed it didn't sound right. They diagnosed it as a cam shaft gear problem. They replaced the camshaft gear but it didn't solve the problem. Now it's back to square one. I'll find out more info soon...

Hope someone still watches this thread....lol
My 19 5.7 tundra makes a similar noise.
Had it in several times to the dealer and all said they heard it but seemed normal. And to be honest that was 40K miles ago, but still makes a knocking sound at idle, more when the motor is stopped, in great with a load like the AC on. You can turn the ac off and the noise gets much quieter.

No noise at start and when warming up, but the warmer it gets and especially in hot weather the louder it is. Get it above 10 or 15mph and it's gone.

Shouldn't worry but it does drive ya crazy!!

This noise has had me concerned since I bought it used with 38k. I’ve listened to some others at work and mine is definitely louder. My truck is lifted with cuts in the liners so maybe that contributes to it being louder. I also get knocking that increases with RPMs but it’s intermittent.
Let’s keep this thread alive. I want to know if anyone has experienced engine failure after noticing this noise.

Sounds completely normal to me. My 21 has sounded like that when new and i was test driving it. Maybe even worse. Got 60k on her and nothing has changed.

Also noticed some coworkers truck sounded better than mine., less rattle/diesel/ valvetrain noise. Trucks were parked side by side and fully warmed up and both running in park. His was 2 years older than mine and was a 4x4 everything else was the same option wise. But his had less extra noise/valvetrain/ Diesel like clatter.

Hmm mine sounds more worse tbh but since I have warranty I brought it in to have them look at it other than that the trucks drives fine

    Anymore update on this?
I just purchased a 21 and it’s doing similar thing. More noticeable on the passenger side. Only had it 1 week. I noticed it after i did an oil change. Immediately after the oil change and start up i hear the knocking noise. The engine is quiet. But the knocking can be heard.

2021 tundra platinum idle noise. Knocking?

had 2007 since new, has always made the noise before warmed up. Some very early discussions or complaints about the 2 gen was the truck had a slight diesel sound to the 5.7.
i have 192000 miles and she still has the noise, no drama.

Mine only after fully warmed up. It’s definitely louder than the normal injectors firing ticks.

Unless the camera is filtering something out that you were hearing, that sounds normal. The 5.7 sounds like a sewing machine.

That’s not knocking. That’s normal ticking, and it can be quieted down with thicker or better oil. Mine is quieter with Kirkland 5w30. It was also quieter with Amsoil 0w20.

The 3UR-FE is likely the most diesel-sounding gas engine in the world. Aluminum block and thin oil don’t help.
