I would not be looking at this situation as being anything remotely "normal". Take a moment and look at how many 2/2.5 gen Tundras are on the road with more than that and zero issues. It didn't have a 15 year run because it was prone to failure. ;)

You would be very wise to keep looking and also to learn from this....dealerships aren't paying for all that costly overhead, their customers are. Many of them actually hire third party diagnostics guys to help them because their glorified lube techs are clueless parts swappers. It's crazy, but profitable.

That’s a “f*** you” quote to get you to trade into a new vehicle followed by a relatively simple repair to your old truck that is subsequently put on the lot for $20,000.

They are not diagnosing, they are spit balling or bullshitting.

Except I just took the plunge on a ‘12 with similar mileage. Coolant flush was done just over 20k miles back but that video makes me want to do it with every oil change.

If it helps, I have a 2017 with 275,000 and the ONLY thing I've had to do is replace the fuel pump and that was a few weeks ago.

Thank you. That's the only thing that 3rd gen tundra wants, but can't touch it.

Iam not completely convinced that the coolant is solely responsible for the head gasket failure. As others have mentioned there are many high mileage tundras on the road with original coolant. Checking my maintenance records I have changed my coolant approximately every 30k and my head gasket failed. Probably a great idea to change it often but looking at the design of the gasket relative to the coolant port, not sure I can blame the coolant. Thought my almighty tundra was going to go to distance, guess iam one of the unlucky. I don’t scoff at the other manufacturers any more, fell off my high horse.

Maybe all high quality reliable toyotas go to middle east these days?

As a matter of fact, most of the really heavily modified 5.7's in the world can be found in that region. They are rockin 7.0 stroker engine conversions over there that run north of fifty grand.:burnrubber:

If your dealer is just doing random change-outs without actually diagnosing the problems, they are completely incompetent and cannot be trusted.

I take that to mean it's been confirmed the HG failed? Who posted anything about trucks running on original coolant?? I don't see a post like that.

Sounds like you went way over kill on the coolant changes. Did you do the work yourself or at a shop? I keep going back to the orange coolant response - if the coolant looked orange, it was either the wrong coolant or way older than 30k miles.

Did the engine ever overheat? Heat and/or acidic / incorrect type of coolant are usually what causes HG failure in naturally aspirated engines. Not sure what else could cause it...

I drained my radiator yesterday (2018 with 95k miles). The tiny little spout at the base of the radiator took forever to finally drain it all out. I was on a creeper working the valve and at my age (75), sliding out and standing up to wait for it was not in the cards. I could have taken a nap while this was going on.

Both sides of the block have brass drain valves. Turn steering all the way and access from behind tires with long ext.

Yeah, I know. With my limited ability, this was just not something I could do. This was done at the same time as an oil/filter change and it was all I could do to accomplish those tasks.

I figure I will wait a month or two and do another radiator dump and refill. Then another one a bit later. That should be good for a decent refresh. Using Toyota Super Long Life coolant (the pink stuff).

Apparently that shop is not qualified to diagnose the problem. I wouldn't immediately jump to conclusions thinking the head gasket is bad, but its a somewhat simple diagnosis. Did they provide leak down test results? Coolant pressure test? Compression tests? Bore scoped the cylinders?

2 adjacent misfiring cylinders is about as classic of a sign for HG leak as you get. Coolant in the holes hamper the ability for them to ignite. The thinnest part of the gasket is always between two holes.

Car care nut says they changed gasket material starting for MY 2014.

A little coolant leaking into a cylinder at 65 mph shouldn't make a sudden big difference in driver's seat.

If you lose half your cylinders on one side at freeway speed - you're gonna feel and hear it.

That would certainly change things and make me feel better about the dealer's diagnosis

Did you receive a positive diagnosis of head gasket failure?

    Affecting 6 of 8 cylinders or cylinders # 6 & 8?
