I believe Nitro only recommends such a heavy oil to make their new gears sound quieter and is completely unnecessary. Gearinstalls.com ZUK and I agree that running the factory weight oil, either syn for non-clutch LSDs and longer change intervals or non-syn for Auburn and just change it often. I've still got 6 qts of nitro oil for sale if anyone wants some near central/southern IN, or eastern KY/TN.

Darn, I literately bought a tray of Nitro's oil when I got the 5.29s, guess going to sell them now.

Me too. It's probably fine to use for break in. Not like you're gunna be abusing the lsd and doing burnouts the whole time....

Funny, I posited the same thing when I spoke with Auburn on the phone. That’s my guess, given the frequent complaints I hear about the whine associated with Nitro’s 5.29s. My install got pushed back a few days (unexpectedly) by the shop, but hopefully I’ll be able to post a report by next Wednesday or so.

So I just got back from the shop. First impressions, based solely on a 5-6 mile crosstown drive:

Really happy with the overall gear choice. Doesn’t feel nearly as tall as I was afraid it might. Truck feels responsive and shifts crisply. I was gentle with the gas, but have no doubt that I can easily spin those 35’s off the start with a heavier foot.

Gear whine - it does exist, but solely on the coast. I only noticed it when I specifically listened for it with the radio off. Under almost any normal driving (radio, conversation, or other background sound) I would never notice. Frankly, I think it’s been made out to be much more of an issue than it really is. YMMV.

Hopefully soon I can give some highway reports, but for now I’m very glad I did 5.29.

Very nice! I have my appointment for the end of the month. Pretty excited for the re-gear after test driving recently w/@CrashRat We tried to replicate the gear whine and it was there but very subtle as you described as well.

Got my Tundra re-geared to 5.29 and threw in a grip pro in the rear. I went through Keith and his buddy's shop did the install. I'm way happy with the choice I made. I ripped out the pedal commander and the truck drives so much better on 35's. I didn't even notice a "whine" but I have a magnaflow, MT's, and 2 10 inch subs.

I couldn't quite make out from this thread which gear oil to use during my first change in a few hundred miles? I have an LSD but no clutches in the grip pro.

Powertrax recommends non synthetic and no friction modifiers since something on the LSD rubs against something else, I'm one oil change in on my grip pro and ran synthetic with the notion being everything will be happier at the POSSIBLE expense of less hookup from the LSD, and if that turns out to be a big deal then I'll just switch to more archaic oils. I'm using Amsoil Severe Gear right now and have about 3000 miles on everything.

I just scheduled my appointment for Nitro 5.29s and a rear ARB locker install for mid-June. After a ton of back and forth with the shop owner about various products, the final work estimate specified 'conventional' gear oil for the break-in then 'synthetic' after that. I have asked him which specific products he uses, still awaiting his response. I have not been to this shop before, but he's well-reputed on my local FB Toyota group. He does almost exclusively Toyotas, mostly LCs, but he says he's done several Tundras. So, I feel reasonably comfortable with his level of expertise.

Am I reading from this thread correctly that Motul is the only synthetic that will play nice with the ARB? I've read so much on various threads on here and other forums found through searching online, seems like there are more than a few pitfalls to avoid. Definitely don't want an experience with ARB like @Jimes has documented.

@831Tun @osidepunker @Bo-Hunter @dirtydeeds @Spvrtan you guys seem to be pretty well-versed in this topic. What should I make sure this shop does or does not do?

Hopefully @Vizsla will chime in, he's been through a lot with his gears. But pics of the assembled 3rd member with gear paint would be nice for you to see. There are some seals in the ARB that don't play well with a particular additive in synthetic oil. Sorry, my dumb ass can't remember what it is, @osidepunker told me this and I'm sure he remembers. He's busy with school these days so I'll send him a text and report back. A call to ARB might answer the question too. IMO a cheap non syn. oil is best for the first 500 mi. If your gears are REM polished maybe you don't have to change the oil at 500 but I probably would. I had a good 1/2 hr wait on the side of the road on my way home from the gear shop following their instructions for break in.
I run Ansoil syn in the front (no locker) 75-110 and reg. in the rear. Lucas 75-140

    Straight from the horse's mouth...

The shop owner who's doing my install said most gear oils don't contain any friction modifiers/reducer additives that would be harmful to the seals of the air locker. Without knowing what the specific additive is, I can't verify this.

I use amsoil 75w-140 severe gear full synthetic. It doesn’t have any lsd friction modifiers in it. I use the same on my GX460 and the tundra. No issues with the seals failing on me. It’s the copper line that jumps over the ring gear that if not routed properly will hit the ring gear and get a hole in the line and it’s over, no locker. But the rubber seals have all been good. No issues with the GX’s lockers at all. Just a bad install on the locker on the tundra.

Thanks, I just purchased this stuff for my diffs. I sweat way too much over this lol. So much conflicting info out there, and ARB doesn't provide much guidance.

I just finished my 5.29 break in. No locker. The most important factor to my post is that I am cheap. After consulting with my shop that did my regear, they said they use chevron 85W140. I asked them if I could split the baby and do 2 quarts of Lucas 75w140 and about 2 quarts of 85w140 conventional. They said it's no issue as long as the break in done correctly. Just did it this morning and drove 10 miles. No change. $30 total.

Ok, just talking (typing) out loud here. Got off the phone with Nitro. About to finish my break in of my 5.29’s and e Eaton locker. He confirmed synthetic 80w140 for my application. Does this all jive with everyone else. For some I see others have LSD which I don’t have on my ‘10.
